Universal Monster Movies on Blu Ray?
I am sick of waiting for Universal to release it's classic Monster Movies in the Blu Ray format . Last year was the 75th Anniversary of the Jewel in the Crown of all it's back catalogue titles:The Bride of Frankenstein , and this year is Frankenstein's 80th Anniversary and STILL no Blu Ray release!

There are two big things preventing this:
1) Universal has no interest in releasing movies this old on Blu-ray. Unless I'm forgetting some, I believe that Psycho is the only movie made prior to 1980 that Universal has released on Blu-ray to date.
2) Black & white movies don't sell on Blu-ray. An executive from Warner Bros. (a studio that has released several black & white classics) came right out and said this recently. No matter how significant the title, they don't sell. There's a mistaken perception among many viewers that black & white movies are not "worth it" in HD.
Point #2 leads directly back to Point #1.

Pretty much! Spartacus, American Graffiti, The Wiz, and Animal House are the only other ones pre-1980, and I don't think much of anyone would say that the presentations of those titles come close to matching what other studios have done with their older films.

I don't have any facts but I imagine that the monster movies are a great seller for Universal. The big titles like Dracula and Frankenstein were released 3 different times on DVD. They wouldnt do that if they didnt sell in the first place. For me, they just need to release the Legacy titles on blu ray and id be a happy man

Universal could re-release all the Universal Monster Movies amidst Polar Lights re-issues of all those Monster Kits with their cool James Bama artwork boxes plus magazines and books about these "retro" - I know that term is generally meant for fifties/sixties nostalgia products - movies!

This year is the 80th anniversary of the original Frankenstein. Perfect marketing opportunity to release the films. But it's looking like another year will pass without any Monster films from U.

Unless they decide to license them, these won't see BD release, period.
Number of pre-1960 movies released on BD by Universal: exactly zero.

With studios being more receptive to licensing these days, I keep hoping the Universal monsters and Double Indemnity will eventually go to Criterion.
