What am I missing in my collection?

So I have been collecting DVDs and blurays for a while now and I think I have a pretty good collection going but I am sure that I am missing some really great things so I would like to reach out to all of you movie buffs out there for your opinion on anything that I you think would be a great addition or that you simply can not believe that I don't have. I am not a horror fan and I am also not a huge fan of raunchy teen comedies so no recommendations of those please but I am sure you can get a sense of what I enjoy from the list below... (Also, if you want to include the edition or version of a dvd that is best then that would be great too!)

I know there is a lot to look through but I would love to read your suggesitons... Thanks so much!

Re: What am I missing in my collection?

Wow, I haven't seen one of these "look at me" threads in ages. Anyway, I probably won't be of much help because it appears that my taste runs a few decades older than yours.

Re: What am I missing in my collection?

Dude, why are you alphabetizing movies starting with "The" under "T"?
The Bucket List goes under "B." The Chronicles of Narnia goes under "C." Did you never learn how to alphabetize in school?

And what are you missing in your collection? How about movies made in black-and-white? How about classic westerns? How about anime? Hong Kong movies? Japanese cinema? I see you have some titles made before 1980 in your list, but they seem to be mostly Disney animation. Unless you meant "Bambi II."

If you want an alternate list, I'll be happy to type one in here.

Re: What am I missing in my collection?

Sorry Ash Ketchum... that is just how my DVD software exported the titles into excel... didn't mean to anger you...

But thanks for the suggestions!

- 12 Angry Men and Miracle on 34th Street are the only black and white movies I own but I have never really given any others a try. Maybe it is time to do so!... Do you have any suggestions of older black and white classics that a 28 year old like me would enjoy? I guess I am just a little too removed from that time period and so don't even know where to start...

- I am not really a fan of anime, hong kong or japanese movies... just not my thing

- I do have a few westerns but once again they are all mostly recent... what do you recommend to try and get me into that genre?

Thanks again for your help... any movies post 1980 that you would recommend? Or are you more into older titles?

Re: What am I missing in my collection?

Looks like he copied and pasted a list or exported from a cataloging program.. You have Cloudy .. Meatballs listed twice. How old are you? It might help out with suggestions.

Re: What am I missing in my collection?

Don't mind me, I'm just a cranky old man. In fact, if I didn't have to head off to physical therapy in a few minutes, I'd type up a list right now. I'll do it later this evening.

But if you're into movies at all, you really have to expand your horizons beyond Hollywood films of the 80s, 90s, and 2000s--the absolute worst period for American film in my estimation. You need to see Japanese classics like RASHOMON, YOJIMBO and especially THE SEVEN SAMURAI, arguably the greatest film ever made. All these are by Akira Kurosawa, one of the greatest filmmakers the world has ever known.

Look up these filmmakers:
John Ford (THE SEARCHERS)
Orson Welles (CITIZEN KANE)
Jean Renoir (GRAND ILLUSION)
David Lean (LAWRENCE OF ARABIA)
Frank Capra (IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE)
Billy Wilder (DOUBLE INDEMNITY, THE APARTMENT)
Howard Hawks (HIS GIRL FRIDAY, RIO BRAVO)

...to name a few.

I see you've got some Martin Scorsese there (GOODFELLAS), so why not MEAN STREETS, TAXI DRIVER and RAGING BULL?

Post-1980? How about some Walter Hill? EXTREME PREJUDICE, JOHNNY HANDSOME, TRESPASS, three of the greatest crime thrillers of the last 25 years.

At least you've got JFK, TOMBSTONE and KILL BILL VOL. 1 up there.

Re: What am I missing in my collection?

If it helps, I'm a 20-year-old male and the movies that got me into broadening my horizons into pre-80s filmmaking were IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE and ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST (as well as 12 ANGRY MEN).

Re: What am I missing in my collection?

Man... I guess I am just too young for these forums! ha ha...
(tecHouse... I am 28)

I will definitely check out the movie from this list... I do have It's A Wonderful Life (so good) and have always wanted to see Lawrence of Arabia and Citizen Kane but those are the only ones I have even heard of... Yikes!

I need to watch Taxi Driver again... I must have just not been in the mood for it last time... but mean streets and raging bull on on my "to watch list"

And I love thrillers so EXTREME PREJUDICE, JOHNNY HANDSOME and TRESPASS are definitely going on the list too!

Thanks so much! I look forward to any other list you provide!

Good luck at your physical therapy appointment...

oh, and Casablanca is on my list too... thanks tommyp007!

12 Angry Men is just pure awesome... and It's a Wonderful Life is something i watch every year at Christmas... Looks like I need to check out One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest...

Any other movies you can recommend that are on par with these?

CITIZEN KANE, and the underrated THE BROWNING VERSION.

More recent stuff - check out AMERICAN BEAUTY, CLERKS and CLERKS II. I think you'd like those. ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and LOST IN TRANSLATION, too.

A good entrypoint for anime is GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES.

Geeze, you wanna get the guy all depressed and sad?

It's an awesome movie which is a must-have at one point but I might start someone off with Miyazaki. Just my opinion, of course

Re: What am I missing in my collection?

You are right... CLERKS was pretty funny but almost a little too over the top... so I never checked out CLERKS II. Kevin Smiths stuff is like candy... it is great in small doses but too much makes me sick. I just watched ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND on netflix and liked it but I need to watch LOST IN TRANSLATION again as it just kind of lost me the first time though...

I will have to give GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES a try... thanks so much for your suggestions!!

Re: What am I missing in my collection?

Well... I don't really like sad movies that much... so thanks for the warning TomOpus!

I will stick Miyasaki on my list then too... I have seen Akira and liked it... am I on the right track there? Any others like that?

Re: What am I missing in my collection?

Buy DVDs of movies/series that you like, or think you will like.

It turns out that I do like some of the 'great' titles that are recommended to me, but I also don't like about half of them. I'm not going to add to my dvd collection based solely on what someone else thinks I "should" watch. I will take recommendations under consideration then make a decision. (If you recommend The Royal Tenenbaums, your future opinions are automatically void.)

But yeah, Grave of the Fireflies is really a downer. I really liked Kiki's Delivery Service.

You are definitely right... I just got netflix so my plan is to check out the recommendations and see what I like... Sometimes I will buy things solely based on reviews but not very often.

Many of the "awesome" movies that I just "have to see" end up being terrible... I am amazed how many times I watch something that has great reviews and I end up just saying... really? People think this is a classic? Sounds like you know what I mean... because if you have the same feeling about The Royal Tenenbaums that I do then I will definitely take more suggestions from you! ha ha...

Anime's my specialty, so I can give you some suggestions to start out with:

Miyazaki:
NAUSICAA OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND
CASTLE IN THE SKY
MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO
KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE
PRINCESS MONONOKE
(five of the greatest animated movies ever made)

Also: WHISPER OF THE HEART, a light-hearted coming of age tale written by Miyazaki but directed by someone else. Shizuku's journey of discovery during summer vacation will pull you in.

Since you liked AKIRA, there are tons of futuristic sci-fi titles to check out:
PATLABOR
PATLABOR 2 (these are both high-end movies adapted from a TV series)

GHOST IN THE SHELL (and if you like it, there's GHOST IN THE SHELL 2: INNOCENCE)

WICKED CITY (a little more hardcore)

Family sci-fi comedy:
SUMMER WARS (from 2009)

Family comedy-drama:
TOKYO GODFATHERS

Thrillers:
PERFECT BLUE
CRYING FREEMAN (Vol. 1 is best)

High school fantasy:
THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME

There's tons more, but I don't want to load you down.

But GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES is a must at some point. A powerful drama about two Japanese children left orphaned by the war and just beautifully made.

I'm working on lists of black-and-white movies and westerns for you.

I thought I was the only one who was kinda confused through this movie.

Between the 80s and present day, I tend to have a soft spot for anything directed by Ron Howard and Steven Spielberg. Of the ones I've seen, I ended up liking them right off.

So my piece of advice, take your most favorite movie in your collection and look up what other movies were directed by the same person. Likewise with a favorite actor / actress. This is what I do when it comes to being introduced to new movies. Unfortunately, there's only 1 place locally I can go to to rent older (beyond the year 2000) titles and they're slowly getting rid of most of them since they're not renting as often as the new releases.

Can't wait to see it!! and thanks for the list of anime... like I said before, it has never really been my thing but I am willing to give it a try!

Supermike07...

That is something I have been trying lately... looking up movies based on my favorite actors and directors... I have found a lot of hidden gems that way... Netflix I think is going to be pretty fun as it will allow me to check out things that I never would have before and hopefully help me find some more hidden gems too. Thanks for the suggestion!

Re: What am I missing in my collection?

First, forgive any duplicates. It's just easier to mention some classics I'd endorse and I don't remember all your list. So...

It appears you like a bit of sci-fi.

You didn't specify which version of Planet of the Apes you own so I'll just say stick with the 1968 original. If you don't own it, get it. The remake pales in comparrison.

Here are some other sci-fi classics you should check out:

2001 A Space Odyssey (1968)
Alien (1979)
Blade Runner (1982)
Bride of Frankenstein (1935) (part horror, part sci-fi)
The Day the Earth Caught Fire (1961)
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (1956)
Escape from L.A. (1996)
The Fly (1958)
The Fly (1986) (one of the few remakes worth viewing)
Forbidden Planet (1956)
Galaxy Quest (1999)
Gojira (1954)
The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) (another remake worth a view)
Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959)
The Last Man on Earth (1964)
The Road Warrior (aka Mad Max 2) (1981)
Them! (1954)
The Thing from Another World (1951)
The Thing (1982) (another good remake worthy of a viewing)
The Time Machine (1960)
The War of the Worlds (1953)

And some classic Comedy:

Dinner at Eight (1933)
Duck Soup (1933) (basically anything from the Marx Brothers)
His Girl Friday (1940)
M*A*S*H (1970)
Monkee Business (1952)
My Man Godfrey (1936)
A Night at the Opera (1935) (see comment on Duck Soup)
The Pink Panther (1963) (if yours is the remake - see this *after* A Shot in the Dark)
The Producers (1968) (if yours is the remake you *really* need to see the original)
Road to Utopia (1946) (*all* of the Crosby/Hope "Road" films are good IMHO)
A Shot in the Dark (1964)
Some Like it Hot (1959)
Stripes (1981)
The Thin Man (1934)
This is Spinal Tap (1984)
Time Bandits (1981)
Topper (1937)
What's Up Doc? (1972)

And because you had a couple of musicals:

My Fair Lady (1964)
Paint Your Wagon 1969)

And a few classis of varying genres:

The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
Ben-Hur (1959)
Captain Blood (1935)
Catch-22 (1970)
Dr. No (1962)
Gone With the Wind (1939)
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (1966)
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939) (you didn't specify which you own - this is the best IMHO)
Kelly's Heros (1970)
King Kong (1933)
The Mark of Zorro (1940)
Mister Roberts (1955)
Run Silent Run Deep (1958)
The Sea Hawk (1940)
Spartacus (1960)
Stalag 17 (1953)
Tarzan and His Mate (1934)
The Ten Commandments (1956)
Von Ryan's Express (1965)
Where Eagles Dare (1968)
You Can't Take it With You (1938)

You indicated you don't like horror otherwise I'd recommend some of the classic, pre-1960 titles.

I've left off many, many other quality films but this list should keep you busy a while.

Re: What am I missing in my collection?

My favorite Miyazaki movie is Howl's Moving Castle. Perhaps it was because I read the books first (though there isn't a lot of actual book plot in there...), but second would probably be Kiki's Delivery Service.

Older movies (I'm pretty close in age to you, a few years older) I sometimes have a hard time getting into as well. Ones I really enjoyed usually have Audrey Hepburn in them...I see you have Breakfast at Tiffany's and Sabrina (if it's not the 1954 version with Hepburn, it's better than the Harrison Ford version!), try Roman Holiday. I also second the Adventures of Robin Hood. But my favorite "older" movie has to be the Court Jester. Has Danny Kaye in it, a musical comedy adventure. Good fun and as a Disney fan, you'd recognize some of the actors in it.

For action movies, I didn't see that you had Leon: The Professional. Excellent movie. Natalie Portman is very good in it, especially for how young she was.

Hope these help!

Re: What am I missing in my collection?

Thanks so much for the list BobO'Link! Those will definitely keep me busy for a while... I have seen or own a few of the ones you have listed but once again there were quite a few that I had never even heard of before so I look forward to looking into them... I just have to remember to not be closed minded when viewing them... so many times I will start an older movie and there is just something about it that just doesn't grab me and pull me in... I don't know if it is because I have grown up with movies that are all mostly about production value and special effects or what... I mean the story and the characters are what I truly care about so it should not matter if the movie is in black and white or not but I don't know... I guess I just need to grow up a bit! ha ha...

Thanks to you too LJG765!
I have heard of Kiki's Delivery service before but never seen it... but I will definitely put the others on your list on my list...

and you are spot on with Leon: The Professional... (It was just listed under "The Professional" in my list) that is one of my all time favorite movies! The action is great, suspense and even comedy in it are all great... but most importantly the story and characters really grab you... any other movies like this out there??
