Law & Order: The Complete Series DVD - 104 disc set 11/8/11
Wow! OK who is going all in?
The Emmy-winning series Law & Order is the longest running crime series of all time and you now hold a complete collection worthy of its iconic status. This incredible set includes every powerful hour made from Law & Order's 20 years on NBC and comes with an exclusive and collectible episode guide.
For twenty seasons, Dick Wolf's Primetime series covered the dedicated New York City police who investigated crimes and the district attorneys who prosecuted the offenders. Known for its hard-hitting, ripped-from-the-headlines style, the series showcased the talents of numerous illustrious stars from stage, film and television.
Rediscover Law & Order's intelligent writing and the riveting acting that inspired a brand of successful dramas that continues to captivate audiences around the globe.
Between 2002 and 2010, Universal Studios Home Entertainment has released DVD sets of Law & Order, managing so far to put out the first 8 seasons of the show, and "The 14th Year" as well. For the last ten months there were indications that separate season sets of the 9th and 10th years were on the drawing board, but so far the studio has made no official announcement. Fans have, quite simply, grown upset at the long wait for the remainder of the legendary show's 20 seasons!
This morning Universal has solved that with an announcement that on November 8th they will release Law & Order - The Complete Series, a 104-DVD collection of all 20 years of the program! Taking the disc masters from the nine seasons already released and adding the remaining eleven seasons to it on a bare-bones basis, it looks like fans can soon enjoy all 456 episodes!
The cost is $699.99 SRP, which sounds like a lot of course. But let's do the math and keep it in perspective: at 104 DVDs in the set (and each one holding an average of 4 "hour-long" episodes), the $699.99 list price breaks down to just $6.73 per disc. That's far cheaper than most consumers pay for a single-disc release of a recent theatrical film which clocks in at less than half the running time. And it also breaks down to $40 per season, which is quite reasonable for an hour-long show. Plus, don't forget that the above is the LIST price; retailers (such as Amazon.com) will definitely discount it by quite a bit. Our guess (and it's just a guess!) is that the "street price" (i.e., the price you pay) is probably going to end up being closer to $500-ish (about $25 per season, and under $5 per disc).
Package art isn't available yet, so stay tuned for that. Below is a copy-and-paste of the details that Universal has provided to retailers this morning, breaking down the release on a season-by-season basis (note that we've added a count of how many episodes were broadcast during each season, but that's the only alteration we made). There's no word yet from the studio about plans to release the remaining eleven seasons separately. As you can see, previously-released seasons are being re-used with the same specs (notice how The 14th Year has "full screen video" as it did on its 2004 DVD set, rather than anamorphic widescreen like the seasons before and after).
On the other hand, one improvement we see is that season sets which were previously released as two-sided "flipper" discs (like The 14th Year) are now on regular single-sided DVDs, with the studio simply using twice as many discs to make up the difference. The info provided by Universal shows no new bonus material, but all extras found on the previous DVD releases appears to still be present. One thing we've noticed isn't mentioned is the 9th Season special "Exiled: A Law & Order Movie"; we'll try to find out if that's included or not. In the meantime, take a look for yourself about what the studio says you'll find on this great big collection:

I hate when they do this. This is a real kick in the nuts if they don't release the remaining season sets. I have Seasons 4 through 8 so far and only want S9 and S10 on top of that.

Keep in mind, this is 20 seasons. So of course this is going to be really expensive. Going off MSRP, this runs about $34 a season, which is about how much it costs individually.
With a potential 25% discount, it's going to run about $524.
I'm waiting for ER: The Complete series since they finally released all 15 seasons on DVD and I fully expect that to cost an arm and a leg.

they should offer a buy back program for dumbasses like me who have been buying them along the way. Either that, or start cranking out the individual releases at a rate of more than just one a year.

Is this the largest (as in number of discs) set ever offered? Not quite. there was an United Artists 90th Anniversary limited edition Box Set of 90 movies with 110 discs (Amazon at $599).

Yeah, but how would you have known they were going to do this for such a series like this? Bonanza and Gunsmoke almost fit the same realm here if CBS HE decided to go that route instead of these BS volume sets.

The MSRP for 24's 8 season complete series with $349 and that has far more extras/bonus material than this set.

I just can't honestly ever see myself forking over $400 (on a really good sale) for a single release... that's two car payments...

Whilst I would not buy this set, I would give my soul for complete series boxx sets of Bonanza and Gunsmoke with full restorations and mountains of extras.

My familiarity with this show is mainly from watching reruns on TNT, and I don't know if I could even identity which season(s) might be my favorite(s). But I sure do love watching that teenage girl spaz out at her parents at the end of the season 12 episode "Dazzled."

I think the Law and Order set will be easily found for $450ish on release day. Wouldn't be surprised to see an Amazon One Day or Black Friday deal on it for sub-$400, either.

I like the one where a guy was killed by a falling migratory Canadian Goose and Jerry Orbach quipped "I guess he shoulda ducked"

at the price! That is just too overpriced and how will it fit on the shelf unless you put it on top of the shelf?

Artwork released. It's a huge box set. Will probably take up an entire shelf.
