Planet of the Apes (2001) - A discussion...
... about how much it sucks.
After enjoying my Planet of the Apes marathon consisting of the original series and the latest film, I capped things off with a viewing of Burton's version, which I hadn't seen since theaters.
Lord Christ Almighty, what the fuck happened? All those years in development, all the different actors/directors/producers attached... and then they finally settle on Burton, who produces one of the worst remakes I've ever seen.
The film's ONLY saving grace is that Rick Baker knocked it out of the park with his make-up work, especially the job done on Roth and Duncan. I'd also admit that Wahlberg did a decent job considering the material he had to work with.
The story makes almost no sense, the ending even less and the entire thing felt like a chore to sit through.
This picture, to me, sums up everything that was wrong with the film:

Did she just step out of Paul Mitchell's salon? It seems like Burton was so concerned with getting the look of everything right that he didn't bother to make sure his script was working.
I can't say enough good things about the FX, but I can't say enough bad about the film.

Yeah, I love love love Baker's work on Roth specifically...but beyond Baker's work...yeah...not a fan in any form.
So....I know Burton was having issues during production. What exactly happened?

From another thread:
Sometimes I wonder if people hate this film (and the Matrix sequels) because they are really bad films or because they don't hold up to the original. I am a big POTA fan and I liked it, not near as much as the original 5, but it was a decent remake. The only thing that made it bad was the ending when he lands in Washington DC taken over by the apes, which was stupid and came out of nowhere.

... and I liked Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions.
However, Burton's remake fucking blows. CGI and make-up effects aside, there's not one redeeming thing about that direction, screenplay, or cast. I'm happy that Fox actually hired a talented director for Rise and not a has-been like Burton.

As an Apes fan, it sucks. If the Apes franchise had never existed, it would still suck. Everything about it was bad except for the make-up.
Astronomical unit. He didn't miss the mark by a mile; he missed it by 93 million of them.
