CSI hires Ted Danson as series lead next season

Ted Danson is shifting gears, going from HBO’s Bored to Death to CBS’ flagship CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
Danson replaces Laurence Fishburne as the new team leader. The news of Fishburne's departure came as a surprise to viewers and industry folk alike last month. He had spent two-and-a-half seasons on the procedural.
Danson will play the new CSI supervisor for the grave shift after heading the crime lab in Portland and comes to the team as they are still grappling with the professional and personal fallout from last season’s take-down of serial killer Nate Haskell (Bill Irwin).
“You can create a new character on the page, but until the perfect actor comes along and breathes life into it, it’s just words,” executive producer Carol Mendelsohn said in a statement announcing the casting Tuesday. “We’re very excited Ted Danson came along.”
The once top-rated CSI has seen its ratings drop since original star William Petersen departed the show in December 2008. The series posted its lowest-rated finale ever in May, drawing 11.4 million viewers and a 2.6 rating in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic.
An Emmy and Golden Globe winner, Danson will be a series regular and debut in CSI’s Season 12 premiere -- in the series’ new time slot -- on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 10 p.m.
Danson, whose credits also include Damages and Cheers, is repped by CAA, Industry Entertainment and WKT.
Really? Ted Danson?

Maybe Shelly Long can replace Marg Helenberger. Then, add the tech who's ALWAYS sitting in the back and you've really got something.

It's a bit late for an April Fool's joke.
Wow. I have no words.
That's not a good or a bad thing, mind you. I just don't know what the hell to say. It's just so random to me.

George Costanza is going to be pissed.
I suppose since he is a television icon he would be a more natural, familiar and probably far more popular fit than Fishburne was.

He's staying with Bored to Death as a regular as well.
Out of the hundreds of veteran actors in LA and New York they could have chosen, Danson wasn't one I would have picked as the new lead. He can obviously do drama from his time on Damages. But, this choice is so random. He must be friends with Les Moonves or something.

I'm hoping he gets an Emmy nod for his fantastic work on Bored to Death last fall.

I'm fine with this choice, though it would've been interesting to see somebody like Kurt Russell (what is he doing nowadays?) or even John Malkovich, the two names who were rumored before Fishburne was hired. Another name I like would be Michael Keaton...

I'm... intrigued to see where Danson goes with this, but wow, I would love to see Kurt Russell or Michael Keaton on the show. They would be fantastic.

I think it's a great choice, Danson has been fantastic on BtD and Damages these past few years.

Why not just come up with another procedural and put OG CSI out of it's misery? Can't be too hard CBS seems to have it down to a science.

CSI is on its last legs anyway, so it really doesn't matter who they bring in. But I'm OK with the choice, I think he'll bring a different energy to the show.

I bailed on this show last season, but this has me intrigued.
