What is Doctor Who Specials?
I started watching them last week and asked myself-what are these-why if they are part of a season, weren't included in the season sets. Seems strange that these are set apart from the season sets. Maybe someone can explain.

It's because most of the specials are Christmas specials that occur between seasons. The specials that weren't, "Planet of the Dead", "Water of Mars" and "The End of Time" parts 1 & 2 were all lumped together as kind of an abbreviated season. Actually, I think the Christmas specials are integrated into each season.

Yes, instead of doing a full season of Doctor Who in 2009, they did four/five "specials" instead: The Next Doctor, Planet of the Dead, Waters of Mars, and The End of Time Parts I and II.

Consider them season 4.5.

Tennant was doing Shakespeare. His schedule couldn't really allow for a full season. So they did some specials instead.
