Looney Tunes Platinum Collection on Blu-ray (Fall 2011)

Animation historian Jerry Beck and Warner Archives' George Feltenstein lead a panel of renowned animation and restoration experts, including Spike Brandt (The Looney Tunes Show), Tony Cervone (The Looney Tunes Show), and Paul Dini (Lost, Tower Prep), in presenting and discussing selected vintage cartoons from Warner Home Video's fall 2011 Blu-ray release of the newly remastered Tom and Jerry Golden Collection and Looney Tunes Platinum Collections.

Great news! Many of the shorts looked amazing on DVD, so I can't even imagine how they'll look on Blu-ray. It will also be a bit tragic if they re-do many of the cartoons we already have on the DVD Golden sets when there are so many unreleased shorts. I think fans have been Looney Tunes starved lately. Also, finish the Animaniacs and Tiny Toons sets and try to do something about the Censored-11. The new Looney Tunes Show is a great 22-minute episode sitcom format for our beloved characters, but it doesn't seem to have the addictive fast-paced viewable quality the 7-minute shorts had.

Thanks for posting. I really hope if they're going to switch to Blu-ray releases with a new line, they'll either release stuff that hasn't been released before, or give us some sort of better organized release than the DVDs.

The "Robin Hood" HD-DVD (don't know about the Blu-Ray) has a couple cartoons in actual HD, they look pretty good. Guess I'll hold off buying the rest of the Golden Collection DVDs now...

A sure purchase even if it includes most or all of the shorts from the Golden Collection. I can't wait to see them on HD!

But barring that, I would at least rather see the shorts "mixed up" a bit on each disc, to more closely resemble the way they were shown on Saturday mornings years ago, which is likely how the majority of us first saw these films. The way the DVDs were done with all one character on each disc got really tiresome after only watching a few shorts.

The standard package (pictured just below) costs $59.96 SRP, and consists of a 52-page "digibook" with rare images, along with the discs. There will also be a separate The Looney Tunes Platinum Collection Volume 1 Limited Edition Blu-ray version for $79.98 SRP, with the same basic package slid into a larger box that also includes a Framed Litho Cel with Certificate of Authenticity, a Souvenier Tin Sign, and a 2.5 oz Character Collectible Glass. Jerry's post at Cartoon Brew also mentions a commemorative magnet, too. The Limited Edition package (shown in a "beauty shot" at the bottom) is numbered, for greater exclusivity and collectibility. Off the top of my head, I see a lot of previously released shorts. However, it actually looks like we're getting a variety of shorts on each disc, instead of just a disc full of one character, which is fantastic news. I'm not completely familiar with the storage capacity of Blu-ray discs, but it seems like they'd be able to fit more than 25 shorts per disc, right? I sort of wish Warner Bros. would commit to releasing every short on DVD or Blu-ray; because there's really a ton of shorts that haven't been released yet and I can totally seem them discontinuing these releases after a while, just like the Golden Collections.
My biggest complaint though is that I really wish this wasn't being released in a digibook format though, since I can't stand those and it really disrupts the uniformity of my Blu-ray Collection.

The first time I'm actually interested in one of Warner's big-box collector's editions, this one looks pretty good to me. 
And chronologically wouldn't work for me unless they started around 1947 or so.

The old DVD sets may have seemed random, but each disc had a theme, and they were usually in chronological order within that theme. This BD just seems like a random batch slapped together. Warner got it right with the Laserdisc, why not here?

I personally prefer a random batch of shorts tossed on the discs; it gives you a variety of characters and gags compared to the Golden Collections where you'd see Bugs do the same thing for two hours straight. This better replicates the hours of Looney Tunes I'd watch as a kid and I wouldn't have it any other way; I don't think I'm alone in appreciating the randomness either.

Same. I'll probably wait a bit... but releases in standard packaging for these seems more like the exception rather than the norm, given how many that have been out for yrs. Who knows, maybe we'll get a regular wal-mart version or something. I guess they must be making bank with the deluxe packages... I don't know how people have the room for them.

I understand the difficulty of remastering all the cartoons and appreciate people wanting random collections, but these historical cartoons need to be released chronologically. The Popeye sets and the upcoming Tom and Jerry blu-ray should be the standard for a classic cartoon release. Having said that, I'll probably buy this as I've bought all the previous releases but it's getting much more difficult to justify buying cartoons I've already bought. It's just disappointing that Warner hasn't been too forthcoming with information on their long term plans. I'm sure their plan is to milk us as long as they can and then unveil the Ultimate Collection.
