Torchwood: Miracle Day -- Season Premiere -- "The New World" -- 7/08/11
By djariya at 2011-07-07
Synopsis:
Spoiler:
10 episode season.
Premieres Friday night on Starz for those here who have it. I subscribed to Starz for Camelot and will keep it until the end of this shows season. Then I will cancel and renew again for Spartacus' 2nd season in 2012. Going to try to jump in with no background of the British series.
Unfortunately, if you don't have Starz, you won't be able to watch it legally on Netflix until October. Of course, that's not going to stop many of you here from finding another way to watch it.

Question, I know Torchwood was originally a British series, but why is John Barrowman's character speaking with an American accent?

It's kinda complicated...I'm curious how much of Jack's history they will attempt to explain to brand new viewers so I don't really want to say...at least in my opinion.
I know Barrowman himself was born in Scotland but raised in America so he naturally speaks with an American accent.

Captain Jack has always spoken with an American accent. His character is actually from the future and another planet, but he's taken the identity of an American GI from WWII.
And if that isn't enough to chase you away, welcome!
I can't wait. As much as I'm looking forward to Doctor Who returning, I'm looking forward to this even more. Children of Earth was, imho, the best thing RTD ever did as a show runner.

The commercials for this looked so good that I started watching from the beginning to get caught up before I start this season. Really a great show and I'm disappointed I hadn't thought to watch it before.

It appears the whole first episode is up on Xfinity TV: http://xfinitytv.comcast.net/tv/Torc...w-World/videos
I'm checking it out now.
And yes, Xfinity is run by Comcast and is totally legal.
Edit: God this site has the worst buffer I've ever seen. I constantly have to pause it to let it refresh. Price of seeing it early, I suppose.

Good start. You can see where the bigger budget is going. It's all up on the screen.
Bring it on, RTD!

I saw an interview with RTD where he said the story setting is a great way to introduce new viewers to Jack and his background. Personally I hope they address where we left things between Jack, Torchwood and Gwen at the conclusion of CoE.

I've been looking forward to this day since the early announcements regarding "Torchwood: The New World" started leaking. I upgraded my lineup to add Starz two weeks ago (there's a $25 rebate for new subscribers who keep the channel for at least 3 months, btw) and rewatched Children of Earth this week - Day 5 was last night and I'm still an emotional wreck.
All of the previews look great, but I had to start looking away about a week ago becuase I want to see this fresh and unspoiled. Sure, I know the premise and that Gwen is mighty proud of being Welsh, but that's it.
C'mon RTD, bring it!

I haven't watched the original British series, but I plan on jumping right in tonight. I'm currently enjoying Starz free for 12 months courtesy of Dish

Just finished up Children of Earth so I'm looking forward to this. Hopefully it's as good if not better.

I liked it but Mekhi Phifer's acting (particularly the whole trip to meet Gwen) was aweful.

Just watched TW:TNW on the Starz website. Very happy Torchwood is back, thought I would have to wait until after the BBC airing to see the show. I'm assuming that this will be the only ep Starz will give away for free.

So, if you have never seen an episode, can you jump right into this and not be totally lost??
I hope so because it really looks good, even from someone who has never seen it before

As far as I understand it, it's a quasi-reboot. They will delve into Jack and Gwen's backstories a bit but not with the assumption that you've seen the show before.

It's not a reboot. It's the new season of Torchwood that is making concessions to American audiences.

Yes, this had stronger ties to the previous seasons than I thought, but I'm sure a new viewer would have no problem jumping in since it's a stand-alone story.
