Four Flies on Grey Velvet - 1/30/12 (UK)

I mentioned this in the BU/Synapse thread, but figured the news deserved it's own thread, lest discussion veer too far off-topic in the other thread.

From Cult Labs:
To mark the Fortieth Anniversary of its production, and twenty years after the film disappeared from the public eye, Shameless Screen Entertainment are aiming to release the first ever worldwide Blu-ray of Dario Argento’s Four Flies on Grey Velvet – remastered in HD from the original negative by the original lab. After two years of behind the scene negotiations via their “Italian connection”, Shameless Screen Entertainment is proud to announce that they will soon release the missing Argento opus: Four Flies on Grey Velvet – or, fact fans, what more accurately should be called Four Flies of Grey Velvet – as per the literal translation of Quattro Mosche Di Velluto Grigio.

It doesn’t stop there, Shameless have put their investigative caps on and - pending the availability of the original filmmaking team - they intend to discover for their fans what really happened to Dario Argento’s “lost” film...

Four Flies on Grey Velvet will be released on Blu-ray and DVD by Shameless Screen Entertainment on 5 December 2011.
No word yet on region-coding, but Shameless' one previous Blu-ray, New York Ripper, was region-free. I sent an email to Shameless about the region code. If Shameless start releasing Blu-rays regularly, this can become a general Shameless Blu-ray thread.

Fuck it. Just pull an Arrow, release the first pressing as Region ABC, and make all future pressings region B locked.

That would require them to basically completely take a shit on the transfer since they've done that with almost every Italian film they've released on blu.

In Arrow's defense, every other release they've put out has been region-free, to the best of my knowledge. You certainly can't say the same for Criterion.

Not one of my favorite Argentos, but if it's Region Free, I'll definitely snatch it up...

re: Four Flies on Grey Velvet - 1/30/12 (UK)

From Cult Labs:
Shameless are due to interview Luigi Cozzi who, aside from having written the story for and acted as AD on Four Flies on Grey Velvet, also wrote the book on it! He's one of the highest authorities on the film and so an interview with him will be one of the highlights of the release.

Shameless were wondering if you, yes, you, had any burning questions about Four Flies that you would like them to put to Cozzi. Post them in this thread and then Shameless will pick their favourites to take forward.

I have no closing date for this at the moment as the date for the interview has yet to be set in stone, but it could be as early as this weekend. I'll keep you posted.

No news on extras or region coding yet, but it will have a reversible cover.

This is a pleasant surprise - according to DVDAf, AB will be releasing this on 12/27.

It says 'announced' - I've never known DVDAf to be wrong before. It's also up on Hi-Def Release Lists. I wouldn't have posted it otherwise.

re: Four Flies on Grey Velvet - 1/30/12 (UK)

it's just weird since Anchor Bay seems to have little interest in catalog releases nowaday. And given that, it just seems out of place that they would now randomly get the right to Four Flies.

Not saying you're posting bullshit or something.... just seems odd. I sincerely hope that its true though.

If it weren't for the usually reliable sources I cited, I'd be as skeptical as you - I'd written AB off almost completely, and if anything assumed they'd only be releasing high-profile titles. I believe they've had the rights to Four Flies for a while though.

I'm not sure if this means anything or not, but the DVDAf listing now lists 'publisher?' instead of 'Anchor Bay'.

Looks like ThePhantomGoat was right to be weary:

I wonder what source Hi-Def Release Lists had?

They have several short sequences which are damaged (VHS quality to look at) and so have been removed from the HD master.

Shameless want to know would you like to see these sequences reinstated so that you can see the film in its entirety, even though the PQ will occasionally vary?

Or would you like them to be left out so that the film is entirely in glorious HD, with no varying PQ, but have these sequences included as "missing scenes" in the extras?

I'm asking for comments rather than a straightforward poll vote so that Shameless can see your opinions on this rather than just numbers.
I'd rather they went the branching route. Hopefully we'll hear about extras and region-coding soon.

^^
Added another post suggesting the branching route to let people pick which one they wanted. That seems to be the most popular option

I agree, just look at Lionsgate's Blu-ray release of the original My Bloody Valentine. Both the theatrical and unrated cuts are presented on the disc via seamless branching with the deleted material in its workprint-esque state.

That's not much in the way of extras - I hope the price comes down to at least £14.99. Nice to see the trailer collection included though.
