DVD Talk review of 'The Royal Wedding: William & Catherine'
I read Nick Hartel's DVD review of The Royal Wedding: William & Catherine at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=50738 and...
why would you have someone who obviously cannot stand the idea of a monarchy and who "hates parades" review this DVD in the first place?

My review was not intended for a fan to begin with. As I stated in my closing thoughts someone who is enamored with royalty will buy this no matter what.
To the average viewer though, my opinion is the disc is waste of space and furthermore, there's no logical reason why these people should be worshiped by the world. The same goes for vapid American socialites.
Lastly, the parade comment was somewhat in jest.

While the review echoes my feelings, the OP has a point. I know it's a slippery slope of sorts, if I'm using that correctly, as you also wouldn't want a royal family worshiper reviewing the title, someone who hates all action films reviewing action films, etc etc
I think DVDTalk does a fine job in this regard, and am mainly just typing to try to stay awake and think the way reviews are done is an interesting topic.

Not the first time I've seen a reviewer called out for trashing the content of a disc, and when I read this review the other day I knew somebody would be along to call him out on it, but I really don't have a problem with it. The alternative of having only somebody that likes the subject of whatever they're reviewing is that can (consciously or not) lead to them glossing over any flaws simply because they're just happy to have that movie/show on disc finally. Multiple reviews from different viewpoints is the best way, and for something like this, if you know you want the wedding on DVD, you're going to skip the personal review and go right for the technical specs, so the rest of the review is for anybody on the fence.
And again, why is it this particular subsection of the forum is the one to get all the first time posters?

It mostly gets those readers whose rage is so strong they will go through the process of enrolling just to state their case. (Unlike myself, a person reaching the 'no more than one click or I can't be bothered' stage.)
As for the review, it, like any good review, is clear about bias, is entertaining and is informative, and you can divine what you'll think of the DVD (good or bad) regardless of the reviewer's judgment.
