Watch it with a skeleton? Not as prestiguous but the same outcome.

Also to note, the list is in chronological order.

Huh, kind of surprised he ranked The Proud Ones in there. I have that DVD and watched it once---thought it was a decent but unremarkable 50s western. Maybe I'll give that another spin.

Re: Akira Kurosawa's top 100 films.

Somewhat surprised that the one Cassavetes film he picked was Gloria. Overall a pretty good list, though I didn't expect Baby Jane to be on there. Guess he enjoyed indulging in a trashy exploitation flick now and again, just like the rest of us.

Re: Akira Kurosawa's top 100 films.

Damn! I had Broken Blossoms from Netflix here for over a year and lost the disc. His book "Something Like an Autobiography" also lists like 50 movies he saw as a kid, so I tried to add everything I could from that. But I didn't know it was his #1.

The list, as RichC2 notes, is in chronological order, so Blossoms isn't necessarily his favorite film. I was a bit taken aback by Morocco being ranked seventh until I noticed the order.

I missed that, the list isn't nearly as pompous now.

Re: Akira Kurosawa's top 100 films.

Like others have said, I'm a bit surprised by his chioces.

His only Ford is My Darling Clementine
His only Casavetes is Gloria
His only Kubrick is Barry Lyndon
His only Ozu is Late Spring
His only Lumet is Running on Empty
His only Antonioni is Red Desert
His only Hitchcock is The Birds
His only Houston is The Dead

He also picks some strange mediocre films like Daddy Long Legs and The Young Lions. I didn't think anyone considered those their favorite.

And no Mizoguchi.

Re: Akira Kurosawa's top 100 films.

Pretty middlebrow list, overall.

But I'm overjoyed to see GOJIRA on there. And #29, CARMEN KOKYO NI KAERU (aka CARMEN COMES HOME, 1951), the very first Japanese color movie. It's about an exotic dancer from Tokyo who goes back to her small mountain town for a visit and shakes things up. It's an amazing movie. Here's a shot from it:

Sadly, though, Kurosawa didn't live long enough to put this film on his list:

He would have been so proud.

I have my doubts about this list. Kurosawa only directed 30 films, and he certainly didn't direct Godzilla!

Re: Akira Kurosawa's top 100 films.

Unless my memory fails me, this list was actually put together by Kurosawa's daughter Kazuo after his death, and was based on her discussions with Kurosawa. It includes only one film per director and is, as has been pointed out, chronological.

The original version of the list had Kurosawa's comments as well. Here's one, after a quick Google search.

Great to see Baghdad Cafe on the list. I used to suggest that movie to people when I worked for a video store.

Re: Akira Kurosawa's top 100 films.

Who does this guy think he is? Any "top 100" without Seven Samurai or Rashomon is bullshit.
And no films newer than 1997?! What a pretentious prick.
