Covert Affairs -- Season Premiere -- "Begin the Begin" -- 6/07/11
By djariya at 2011-06-01
Synopsis:
Spoiler:
Season 2 will be between 13-16 episodes.
I hope season 2 is a huge improvement. Season 1 was a mixed bag for me. I would say out of the 11 episodes, maybe 5 or 6 were actually good. A few of them were flat out terrible. This show is going to be hard pressed to match how kickass Nikita was this past season.

Interview excerpt with Chris Gorham about season 2.
Jim Halterman: I know the show substitutes Toronto for D.C. but it looks like there are some cool location shoots happening this season. What can you tell me?
Christopher Gorham: Things really get started in the second episode when they go to Paris. I didn't get to go but Piper and Doug [Liman, Executive Producer] went and shot a bunch of stuff and it looks so good. They were at the Louvre and that was incredible. We've been to Puerto Rico and they're sending me to Istanbul to shoot for a couple of days and I think we have one more international trip this season.
JH: Going from season one to season two, what kind of changes can viewers expect to see?
CG: The writers really went through in the off-season and picked out all the stuff that worked and all the stuff that didn't work and they've done a great job of picking up with that. They've taken all the best things of last season and built on it. We've got such great character interactions and relationships, which are getting better and more interesting this season. The action, which is a big hallmark of the show, has gotten bigger and better.

Shame they didn't actually shoot in Puerto Rico. Would've loved to see Piper Perabo.

I'll be interested to see what they cut. While I understand that hiding her job from the married sister with kids is central to the concept of the show, they never really explored that much. Also I think keeping Gorham blind has gotten old already.

So from that trailer and the photo is the her boss/the Director's wife out of the picture now? I'm not sure I loved the character, so I'd be okay if she was gone.

Not bad, but not outstanding either. It was definitely a decent start to the 2nd season. Besides the Ben storyline, I don't think it really set up anything. The plot with the Russian and the Tennis Player/Coach assassins was pretty self contained. I really want to love this show since Piper Perabo is smoking hot and it's got a great look to it, but it just feels so 2nd rate compared to Nikita last season. It's definitely very watchable and there is some action/fight sequences....occassionally.
to making Peter Gallagher a series regular this season. I like Arthur and thought he was so underutilized last season.
at the gratuitous Piper Perabo bikini shots in the opening sequence.
However, I really hate Anne Dudek's character on this show. The character is useless. I realize they want to give Annie a life outside of the CIA, but I think the "At home" sequences are just corny and forced.

I liked the first season a lot, was hoping for a better start to this season. I think I just don't really care much about the Ben storyline at all, so I wish they'd ditch that and focus more on other things.

I thought the Ben storyline was actually the most interesting plot of season 1. The self contained plots were really hit or miss. I did enjoy the storyline that had Oded Fehr as the Mossad agent. I hope they bring him back.

Did anyone else notice that just before it began (at the end of White Collar), the promo they ran on USA said "And now the season finale of Covert Affairs." I was like,
I hope that didn't put off any potential new watchers of the show.

Yeah that was an error on the East Coast feed. I don't know if it was fixed for the West Coast airing.

That was some HORRIBLE blue-screen work outside the boss's house. Was it too hard to find a real location to film that angle at?

I noticed that, too. It was really awful.

^ that and the driving scenes
This wasn't great, but good enough to keep watching. This show has the worst opening sequence ever.

Yeah, I picked up on that house shot too. At least focus on her more and make the background look blurry.
At least they did a good job at the beginning to make you wonder if he was really dead or not.
This show needs an overarching story line in a bad way. And I don't mean the politics of Arthur losing his job. Wasn't he the leak to the reporter anyway? I thought he was feeding her crumbs to keep her happy.
Obviously there is something more to Ben's backstory. The Agency wants him and needs his resources, but they're not willing to do so in public.
