I've recently purchased both Modern Times and The Great Dictator on BD and was wanting to get into more Chaplin films. Other than those 2 I've also seen The Gold Rush (any info on a future BD release?) I used to own the 2 discs are those a long time ago but stupidly sold them. So now I'm wondering of his other films what are the best DVDs to get? I'm looking for both shorts and feature lengths.

You can get pretty much everything Chaplin did by getting a few boxsets:

• Chaplin At Keystone
• Short Comedy Classics: The Complete Restored Essanay & Mutual Collection
• The Chaplin Collection, Volume 1 (Box Set of the 2-Discs, OOP)
• The Chaplin Collection, Volume 2 (Box Set of the 2-Discs, OOP)

But since the 2-Discs are basically all out of OOP I don't know where else you could get them now, other than the few you point out that have been released by Criterion. However, since Janus Films acquired the rights to Chaplin's post-Mutual catalog and Criterion has already released two Chaplin films on DVD and Blu-ray, it seems a safe bet that they'll release everything, either individually or in a box set. I missed out on the Collection Volumes and am waiting to decide whether to bite on the individual releases as they come out or hold out hope for a box set.

EDIT 1: There are actually periodic screenings of Chaplin films going on at various locations. Check here for more information.

EDIT 2: I would probably hold off on getting Short Comedy Classics: The Complete Restored Essanay & Mutual Collection right now; Amazon says there are only three in stock, but there are more on the way and the price is a little high right now. According to Camel Camel Camel it was on sale for under $30 last December, so it might be worth waiting for a bit.

I'd wait for the Criterions for the feature films. The Keystone set is also highly recommended. The Mutual and Essanay comedies is where things get a little difficult. If it was me, I'd get the 90th anniversary Mutual set and buy the Essanay comedies separately. The 90th anniversary set has additional footage that was discovered after the Short Comedy Classics set was released.

It seems as though that set is OOP and the individual Volumes are basically OOP, which is why I recommended the Comedy Classics set instead.

EDIT: Speaking of Buster Keaton though, Kino is releasing all of his 1920-1923 shorts on DVD and Blu-ray in July. One thing I hate about "discovering" old entertainers and movies is trying to figure out which releases and sets to get, since so many lapse into the public domain. Keaton is one I've been meaning to tackle at some point, and with Kino's other Blu-ray releases getting good reviews, it looks like this will continue that trend.
