Funniest establishing shot in a movie?

Yes we've had more out there topics than this. And no, the Star Wars ones where a frog eats a Special Edition bug don't count.

Sadly, I don't think the frog was a special edition addition

Those badass CGI gophers in Indiana Jones and Crystal Skull. I knew as soon as I saw those little motherfuckers I was in for a treat.

Captain Jack's entrance in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, specifically the shot at 1:03.

Re: Funniest establishing shot in a movie?

There is a great establishing shot in the Sandra Bullock movie "While You Were Sleeping" Its just a shot of the street that shows the paperboy, but when he throws the paper, he crashes hard. So random.

Anyone from the Room could count. Hell there are at least 3 establishing shots of the Golden Gate Bridge (to show us that we indeed are in San Fransisco) that actually show the full bridge and take 15 seconds of screen time

great shot but not so random - since pullman and bullock slip on the sidewalk later on in the movie it's kind of a portent.

Re: Funniest establishing shot in a movie?

The opening shot from "Airplane!" with the plane's tail moving through the clouds with the theme from "Jaws" playing.

Re: Funniest establishing shot in a movie?

My establishing shot "pet peeve" is when they show a really obvious famous landmark (like the Golden Gate Bridge or the St. Louis Arch or The White House) and the filmmakers still find it neccessary to have on-screen text that says the location (San Francisco, Washington DC, etc). Spielberg is even guilty of this in (the otherwise excellent) Catch Me If You Can.

I've read about this one. The director had to get many takes to get it right, and people were wondering WTF he was doing this for. Then during test screenings it would get the biggest laugh of the movie.

I thought of Fistful of Yen too.

I don't recall the movie but there was an establishing shot of an ancient time, the year, and then the time.

Any time they have a wide exterior shot of the plane it has a propeller sound effect. So damn funny because it had to be pointed out to me before I noticed it.

Also if you look closely enough, you can see the strings that are holding it up (the directors point this out in the commentary and laugh about it)

Skip to 6:43 (unless you haven't seen the movie, in which case, start from the beginning and watch the whole thing).

I assumed he probably wasn't talking about ATHF:MFFT, but as soon as I read the post it's what came to mind.

Re: Funniest establishing shot in a movie?

I always thought the opening establishing shot of Blade Runner was supposed to be funnier than it really was. I mean, to see the title "Los Angeles, 2016" or whatever and then fade in to this megalopolic hellhole has to be a joke, right?
