Random Metal Re-visit QR "Rage" & "Mindcrime"

After the Warning came out I was eagerly anticipating Rage for Order. What emerged was the polar opposite of the dark toned, straightforward sound of Warning. I never gave Rage a chance. Then Mindcrime came out and I wore the grooves off that thing. After a while I went back and gave it a listen. Listening on headphones was like a religious experience. Now, I would say Rage is my favorite QR album. However, there's no denying how Mindcrime took metal to a whole new level. I'd love to hear which way hardcore QR fans lean on this one.

Both great albums. Throw in The Warning and Empire and you have one the best 4 album runs ever.

I really love the first four albums but Mindcrime is in my top ten albums of all time. Simply amazing.

Rage for Order is a great album, but Operation Mindcrime is an all-time classic.

I remember when Mindcrime first came out and they were playing Eyes of a Stranger on MTV and I didn't care for it at first but it seemed to grow on me. I eventually picked up the tape and it blew me away. It is still one of my all time favorites. The funny thing is I didn't pick up the older releases until a couple of years ago.

I could see that. In my mind, you have to listen to Mindcrime all the way through from start to finish. Eyes of a Stranger has a much greater impact when it concludes the album.

Re: Random Metal Re-visit QR "Rage" & "Mindcrime"

I saw that band twice. Good live show.

Once was on the 'Mindcrime' tour. I think they warmed someone up on that one.

The other was on the tour with 'Jet City Woman' as a new song. They were the headline then.

I'm not sure I've ever listened to one of their albums in its entirety.

Pure brilliance.

I got into them late (I'm talking, post HITN late), so I haven't really given "Rage" a fair shake. I do like the "hits" off the album though.

Re: Random Metal Re-visit QR "Rage" & "Mindcrime"

I, and other friends at the time, were looking forward to Rage. At first the look and sound was, shall we say, different. I actually took to it pretty quickly while a few of my friends did not. Not at all!

My first show seeing QR was during this album.

That said Mindcrime was great from the first listen on. And the previous friends mentioned also felt this way. To this day it still stands up as one hell of an album. But we knew that already.

Re: Random Metal Re-visit QR "Rage" & "Mindcrime"

I saw Queensryche on the Mindcrime tour; they opened for Metallica, who were supporting AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. March 1989, Worcester Centrum. One of the greatest shows I've ever seen.

I gotta admit: while I used to dig QR, they're somehow unlistenable to me now. Mindcrime is just ponderous as hell. Maybe my tastes in music changed, I dunno. Or I just overplayed them to death. Alas.

Re: Random Metal Re-visit QR "Rage" & "Mindcrime"

Depending on my mood I may sometimes call Rage my favorite QR record. What a production - way ahead of its time in 1986.

I think that record is probably the best Tate has ever sounded, and the cold, harsh sound is perfect for the mood of the songs.

Every time I was dumped by a chick in HS (which seemed frequent), I would play the hell out of Rage for Order (and Crimson Glory's Transcendence). Great bleak, dark records to help cheer you up!

Mindcrime is the record that got me into QR. I just got really enthralled by the story, and the guitar work is just awesome. I've always hated the thin sound of the record though. The remaster has helped a bit, but I always find myself reaching for the bass control when I hear it.

My first ever concert was the Empire tour where they played Mindcrime in its entirety. This was at the zenith of my QR fervor, and through connections I was planted firmly in the front row for the whole show. I think I got some of Tate's spittle on me! Awesome show - probably would have been the one they used for the Livecrime video if Pamela Moore had been able to be present. Instead they used most of the Madison show which I think was the night after.

Mindcrime is brilliant. But it's all about the Queensryche EP.

Re: Random Metal Re-visit QR "Rage" & "Mindcrime"

It's funny, I just listened to Rage again last week. It's not that really that rare an occurrence but I was thinking a lot about the album at the time. Maybe I listened more than I normally do, or just wasn't in the right place or something, but I was struck by how pedestrian it seemed. The first three songs are really good, the last three are really good, but outside of "Surgical Strike" the middle seems like a lot of filler. I absolutely hate "Gonna Get Close to You" too. Probably my least favorite song of theirs from their good era.

Mindcrime is of course a masterpiece and completely changed things for me. It wouldn't crack my top 10, but top 25 or so is probably a safe bet. It's solid from top to bottom, and even the silly theatrical elements work really well in that context. "The Needle Lies" is my favorite QR song ever (which is saying something) and that helps the album's standing in my eyes a lot.

I never heard that Dalbello version before. It's more whacked out than the QR version - I like it.

Thanks for pointing out the Dalbello version. That was a crazy video. I had no idea that wasn't a Queensryche original song. You learn something new everyday!
