Weekend Box Office (4/29/11 - 5/1/11) - Summer Box Office Revs Up
1. Fast Five (Universal) NEW [3,643 Theaters]
Friday $34M, Estimated Weekend $80M
Even with a -25% to -30% drop on Saturday, which would be normal because of Friday's grosses expanded by midnight showings, that's still a bigger weekend cume than the top 2 openings this year combined (Rio
$39M/Rango $38M)
2. Rio (Blue Sky/Fox) Week 3 [3,842 Theaters]
Friday $3.2M, Estimated Weekend $12.5M, Estimated Cume $101.8M
3. Madea's Big Happy Family (Tyler Perry/Lionsgate) Week 2 [2,288 Theaters]
Friday $3.1M (-70%), Estimated Weekend $10.5M, Estimated Cume $41.5M
4. Water For Elephants (Fox 2000/Fox) Week 2 [2,817 Theaters]
Friday $2.7M (-61%), Estimated Weekend $9.1M, Estimated Cume $32M
5. Prom (Disney) NEW [2,730 Theaters]
Friday $2M, Estimated Weekend $5.5
6. Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs Evil (Weinstein Co) NEW [2,505 Theaters]
Friday $1M, Estimated Weekend $4M
7. Insidious (FilmDistrict) Week 5 [2,130 Theaters]
Friday $1M, Estimated Weekend $3M, Estimated Cume $48.7M
8. Soul Surfer (FilmDistrict/Sony) Week 4 [2,240 Theaters]
Friday $975K, Estimated Weekend $3.3M, Estimated Cume $33.8M
9. African Cats (Disneynature/Disney) Week 2 [1,220 Theaters]
Friday $900K (-73%), Estimated Weekend $2.7M, Estimated Cume $11M
10. Scream 4 (Miramax/Dimension/Weinstein Co) Week 3 [3,314 Theaters]
Friday $700K, Estimated Weekend $2M, Estimated Cume $35.5M
Very impressive start for Fast Five.
Curious to see how it holds up, if being an actual critically acclaimed movie actually corresponds with what audiences think.

The commercials for Hoodwinked look like it should be on TV, I can't imagine they sunk too much into the production.

I think Fast Five should get to $200 million, but we're now into the "summer" blockbuster season, and time will tell if it can hold on to enough screen to get to $200 million within a 3-4 week period (then other films will soak up available screens).

I'm actually surprised Fast Five didn't do more. The theater I went to at midnight ended up selling out five of their largest auditoriums (it was originally scheduled to just be on three). I haven't seen such a turnout for a midnight opening since The Dark Knight.
Even with a $34 million opening day, its just as high as the two biggest weekend openers of the year (Rango and Rio).
Internationally, Fast Five is kicking Thor's ass. I honestly believe based upon those numbers that Thor will have box office akin to The Incredible Hulk rather than Iron Man. Its not as major of a character in the Marvel universe and it may be a bit too "fantasy" based for mainstream audiences. While reviews are superior to that of Fast Five, I don't think reviews will be a deciding factor. The people who want a Thor film will go, but others may be more lukewarm.
Despite hating it, it's good to see Insidious still up there. $50 million plus on an investment that cost under $10 million for production, prints and advertising? FilmDistrict is the little engine that could with that and Soul Surfer.

BTW, instead of May 6th, why isn't "Thor" opening on May 5th due to it being a Thursday ("Thor's Day")?

Though BOM does list Thor's international at $40m and Fast Fives at $23.7m so maybe they do know something.
Just curious where the conclusion came from.

While I fully expect Fast Five to be a bigger draw overall than Thor, how exactly is it kicking Thor's ass? Thor just opened this weekend internationally and there are no real receipts for it afaik, Fast Five beat it in Australia ($8m to $5.7m) but thats really about the only measure thats out there. By Comparison, The Incredible Hulk opened to $1.9m down under.

It's the biggest midnight screening in Universal history and the biggest for the franchise. Overseas so far, this fifth in the franchise has made $43.7M so far. In addition to the four territories of Australia, New Zealand, Korea and the UK last week, it opened in five more territories on Thursday and remains #1 everywhere and the biggest of the Fast franchise. Germany took in $2.2M from 633 datesas and Austria $155K in previews. Russia opened with $2.4M in 712 venues. Switzerland, Slovenia and Ukraine also came in big. This pic is proving, once again, the theatrical release adage that sequels do really well internationally, which is where this Vin Diesel-Paul Walker-Dwayne Johnson pic debuted first. Which is why it's pummelling Marvel/Disney's Thor in those countries where the two movies were pitted head to head by distributor Paramount.

I would say most Americans are ENTIRELY more familiar with the Thor the Superhero than they are with Thor the Mythological figure. Or ANY mythology whatsoever. Superheroes? Sure. Humanities? Not even close.

What numbers are you all looking at? Thor is at 40 million foreign and Fast Five is 24 according to Box Office Mojo.

Re: Weekend Box Office (4/29/11 - 5/1/11) - Summer Box Office Revs Up
Last weekend in Australia, Fast Five opened with $10.7m vs. Thor's $5.8m. The $24m number for Fast Five includes grosses in UK, NZ and Korea. Internationally, Fast Five just tacked on another $45.3m after opening in another 10 countries, and current domestic estimate is $83.6m, giving Fast Five a $165 worldwide gross at the end of today.

Hemsworth's wife, Elsa Pataky, must be in a quandry, as she's in Fast Five. How many husband/wife couples have films square off against one another in Australia?

Re: Weekend Box Office (4/29/11 - 5/1/11) - Summer Box Office Revs Up
Interesting how the fifth outing in a series is the most critically acclaimed, by quite a substantial margin. I see Thor being given some real competition by this one , even if it gets better reviews, as teenage boys might think Thor looks nerdy.
