Is it possible to use a Roku HD box to stream content from a WD TV Live Hub, maybe with the twonky server, or should I return the Roku I just bought (without checking if it would do this first)?

The only workaround that I've seen to stream local content to a Roku is by setting up an RSS feed in MediaFly and making the files on your network the source for the feed. It might not be worth all of the trouble though.

Thanks for that, It does sound like a bit of a bother.

Looks like there is enough content provided with the Roku that we'll never be left wanting for something to watch.

Plex just released a beat client channel for Roku. if you have Plex Media Server running on your PC you can then access the shows/movies through the Roku.
There might be a way to have plex media server see the WD harddrive and serve up its files; if you have a PC thats always on (or on when you want to watch shows)
