The usual deal:

Wednesday: 90 minute performance show

Thursday: Overbloated boring 1 hour results show

If Heat's around, he can add any additional details that he knows. I watch the show, but not as hardcore as him.

So tired of Scotty, Jacob, Stefano and James.

Really Arminius? -ohbfrank- Voting in the Poll before the show aired?

Heads up to fans of Pia, she'll be performing on the Results Show of Dancing with the Stars next week (4/26).

I still think Haley looks like adult, uh, performer, Tabitha Stern.

That probably keeps me watching

Oh good grief. Yes, she has a good voice and probably didn't deserve to go home so early, but come on... She's getting a bigger push than the eventual winner will probably get.

She's got a better recording voice than any of the contestants left. At the point, the only contestant I'm even curious to watch is Haley, and she's so hit or miss on performance night.

I beg to differ. She is definitely hotter than any of the remaining contestants, though. Let's all cut the shit, though. Like 85% of the uproar and attention she has gotten since her dismissal is not because of how fucking supposedly wonderful her voice is. Granted, it is a nice voice, but in the annals of the show, it aint really all that (with or without the accompanying bag of potato chips).

It's all opinion, but here my take:

Casey has weird affectations in his performances.
Scotty is not my style of music (even the country artists I like)
Pia's voice is much purer than Lauren's.
Jacob has all his histrionics.
Stefano is dull and broadway.
James is mostly performance not vocals.

As for past seasons, I wasn't talking about past seasons; I was talking about this season. I'm not all that impressed with this year's "talent". It part of the reason I'll be done with this year once Nigel drums Haley out of the competition.

Pia has a nice voice, but I seriously doubt I'll be buying a Pia album.

Swinging was from '82 (John Anderson).

Yeah, it's really sad how they take giant broad categories and still need to reach on a song.

Bottom three should be Scotty, Jacob, Stephen with Scotty going home. It will be Stephen, Jacob, Haley, with Stephen going home.

I think Paul could possibly have some success, but never, ever, let him try to sing with a real singer again.

Where is Simon Cowell? Good Lord, did he take Randy's common sense with him when he left?
For me, the only one who can actually sing is Haley.
James Durban keeps my attention.
The rest? El Stink-O.
I just don't get the lovefest w/ Casey. He peaked at week 3.
Stefano peaked at week one.
Lauren isn't going to get any better, the same w/ Scotty. They're not terrible, but they keep singing the same exact song week after week.
Poor Luther Vandross is rolling over in his grave after listening to Jacob butcher his song.

starman9000
04-20-11, 10:26 PM
Don't blame Jacob, the irony of it being Luther's birthday would have been too hard for anyone to overcome.

I am so bored with Scotty..yes,he has a great country voice, can we agree he will have a great career, and now vote him off the show? He seriously is hard to watch. He went from reminding me of Alfred E. Neuman to those bears at Country Bear Jamboree from Disney. You know the animated ones with the eyebrows going up and down? He was the worst of the night, but he wont even land in the bottom 3.

What is playing in the earpiece that some of them have on during their performance? Jacob mentioned hearing drums and losing the "track"?? What is that all about?? Anybody know?

I'm not a regular with this show. Don't make a point to watch it, but once in awhile we'll settle in for lack of anything better. I've seen two episodes this season, and Haley has been far and away the best in both I've seen, yet all the judges seem to act like she should be grateful just to be there. This country kid that everyone seems to love just seems intolerable. And the rock dude completely butchered a great Muse song tonight and they acted like he did something great. And then that country girl at the end seems to have just a great voice with tons of character, and they're telling her to ditch that and try to scream out notes? WTF?

The judging just doesn't make any sense to me. It's all backwards. To me, it seems like everything they say is wrong.

I thought Jacob, Scotty and Stefano were the worst tonight. I hope Stefano goes home tomorrow night. If Haley goes instead of him I'll be pissed. Stefano has overstayed his welcome.

This I knew. Yet the judges let him get away with it as a "LeAnn Rimes" song from whenever she released it -- I don't know. Don't know her version but did she change up the lyrics or still sang about this Charlotte girl she was swingin' with? :p

Debra Byrd talked about this in an interview. They can hear themselves sing. They can choose to only hear their vocals, or some of/all the instruments playing.

I agree with every post above...even if they contradict each other!! (except I'm not familiar with Tabitha Stern's 'work'...an obvious gap in my education).

Honestly, it's a real indictment of the show when the DVDTalk thread is scientifically proven to be 983% more entertaining than the actual show. The 'performances' last night were uniformly HORRIBLE. Randy is right...ANYBODY can win this season (they're on an equal footing...and that ain't a good thing).

Steven Tyler is working overtime to confirm the stereotype of rock stars as idiots. "God said that all men are created equal". rotfl It's sad when you see an aging old maven (he looks just like the character "The Major" in Big Love's final season...or a senior version Ziggy Stardust) who is so totally out of his element (and knows it) that he tries to justify his appearances by grabbing J-Lo's mike, making upskirt comments about a teen, and repeatedly swearing to try to prove his 'relevance'. Pathetic, man. You're about to lose your membership card in the cool rocker dudes club.

Dang...the parts of this season I've seen (lately, recaps or snips during Survivor commercial breaks followed by the last 30 minutes...how much filler can they show?) has really achieved what I thought was impossible...

I'm really looking forward to X-Factor this fall.

Agree. However I would not be sad if any of the above three went home.

I was disappointed in Lauren for the first time. It is like she is just going through the motions. Over the last few weeks, she has went from my #1 to middle of the pack. Come on Lauren, get motivated!

Haley is the only person I find entertaining, but I love that Scotty just ignores the judges criticism of his boring song choices. Just like Pia got the boot when she tried to get away from the ballads, he'll get the boot if he strays from his traditional country sound. I'd actually like to see him win without ever changing his style, just to demonstrate how completely worthless the judges and their recommendations have become.

This practice is really starting to get on my nerves. Why even have themes if you're going to allow such loose interpretations of them?

did they do something to the sound/mic during James' performance. It sounded like they reverbed his mic and played with the voice. It wasn't autotuned but it sounded like a stadium/concert echo effect? I am not sure how to explain it.

Good God, what was that Katy Perry/Kanye West mess? This show is about my only exposure to top 40 but it always amazes me how ridiculous these famous 'artists' look going on after the contestants who can actually sing.

that's all Kanye ever does, other than talking with no rhythm whatsoever over odd seemingly random beats and sounds. most over-rated "artist" in the history of music.

It's actually:

Still Non Relevant. :brickwl2:

 And FOX actually thought re-hiring Nigel Lythgoe as EP/Showrunner was going to help American Idol reclaim it's luster.

Why not Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds? He's written hundreds of Top 40 hits in Pop, R&B, Rock and even Country in the last 20 years. He's much more relevant than that person.

Hell, I would even take David Foster as well.

Missed the show this week but that must have been Katy's current single "ET."
I'm guessing she dressed up like some extra-terrestrial as she did in the music video of the same name.

Katy Perry's ET is no fun at all. I'm surprised it's a "hit". On the other hand, I like California Gurls. It's fun, Snoop actually brings something as a rapper, and Katy is smoking hot in it.

Haley previously looked cute but dorky. She was awkward in her facial expressions and movements. But I have to say... the last couple of episodes she's been hot.

Stefano had a really good attitude about leaving. He wasn't my cup of tea as a singer, but he seems cool as a person. I hope he does well in his career.

Oh, and I just have to mention... a group performance on performance night? Really? If you have the extra time, could you not give it to the contestants so their performances could be longer?

Lauren already sang Natural Woman so I doubt Hailey will do it too. Anyway, none of them can kill it like Kelly Clarkson did in Season 1.

I saw that clip on Jimmy Kimmel last night, great stuff. The guy is an Austrian actor who is starring in Water for Elephants.

Back to the Songs of Carol King - remember that she was a song writer so her catalog is a lot bigger than what she herself sang. I can see Casey doing Pleasant Valley Sunday (The Monkees, written by King).

non-relevant? Carole King is one of the all-time great songwriters of, well, ever. She's written dozens of hits for others in addition to those she sang herself. Just because it's not "recent" doesn't make it "non-relevant" musically. She's as relevant to music as you can get.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Songs_written_by_Carole_King (and these are just those that have a wiki page for the song itself).

that said, i bet Scotty does "I'm into Something Good" and winks and annoys the world the entire time.

I know who she is. She co-wrote and sang backup on a recent Celine Dion song called "The Reason" which I like and I'm familiar with her back catalogue. But still, I'd rather see them work with someone like Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds, who wrote and produced, hundreds of hit songs from the late 80's going into the 2,000's and his catalogue is so ecclectic and recent that IMO more Idol watchers would actually be familiar with the songs.

It seems to me that Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warrick are stuck in the same old trap of using old school artists from their generation.

It's not like I'm expecting them to do "The songs of Linkin Park" or "Britney Spears" and have someone like Scotty or Casey totally make themselves look like jackasses.

RoboDad

i bet Scotty does "I'm into Something Good" and winks and annoys the world the entire time.

The fact that he annoys you does not infer that he annoys "the world" (as does the fact that he has gotten enough votes to stay on the show every week so far).

As for what he'll sing, I would go with this:

Wait a minute. One of them has to cover "You've got a friend."
