Shit, I might have to get all of those. But I'm definitely getting the first two, if nothing else.

Great news, but will the DVDs be PAL?

I'm sure the dvds will be Pal... probably all region, but pal...

I've had mine on order since they were announced a while back... I'm just disappointed that they're bringing them out one a week over a five week period... that means if I want them quicker, I'm going to have to pay amazon.co.uk a lot more in shipping to do 5 shipments... or I have to wait until all 5 are out to get them all (which you know I don't want to wait that long!)

Re: (London) Suede double CD/DVD deluxe editions - 2011 releases

I assume the DVD's will be PAL, but it will be region 0. Which essentially means that quite a few US players will actually play it. My Samsung and my LG bluray players play PAL region 0 discs.

At the moment, the discs are up for pre-order from Amazon.co.uk for a price of just under 10 pounds - which when you think about it, for two CD's and a DVD is somewhat of a steal.

Re: (London) Suede double CD/DVD deluxe editions - 2011 releases

I cannot wait for these - and I love that they're doing them one a week so I'll have time to spend with one before moving on to the next. If I got them all at once I'd never be able to digest one before rushing on to the next. These also look like some of the most fan-friendly expansions as far as content go - obviously you could nitpick over some things missing, but they did a really good job of giving us some previously unavailable (and hopefully mostly interesting) material while still giving a good overview of each album's era.

The biggest thing I'm excited for - and I know I'm in the minority on this one - is the inclusion of "Music Like Sex" on the 'Head Music' set. I've been waiting for a studio version since the "last" tour when they premiered it - I assumed at the time it would end up as a b-side/double a-side for "Love The Way You Love" like "Golden Gun" was for "Attitude", but obviously that never happened.

They previewed the full-length version of "The Wild Ones" on UK radio a few weeks back and it sounds AMAZING. Think the first half of "The Wild Ones" and tack on the end of the full-length "Stay Together" (without a Brett rap and even more Bernard guitar heroics) and you're on the right track.

Man, those first two (or three) look awfully tempting, even though I already have the original releases and "Sci-Fi Lullabies".

Yeah, it's tempting with all that material, but I do have all the original CDs plus lots of EPs and singles, and also the Suede DVD. It doesn't say on the specs of these re-releases, but the Suede DVD had the picture in picture commentary by the band on all the songs (Including the time when they all exit the room because none of them can stand to watch "Stay Together", and probably the coolest hidden easter egg I've ever seen).

oh so do I, but having it all on one disc is much more manageable. I was kind of hoping though they would have included the 1997 Reading Festival performance (which I was at) - particularily 'Implement Yeah' with Justine Frischmann

I always thought 'Golden Gun' was the lost never released James Bond movie theme song track - IMO seem so utterly suitable in doing one - appropriate 'glam', killer attitude and some sizzingling quitar riffs, it's very much akin to their 'Elephant Man' song - which in of itself is a stomper of a song

however I don't see 'Be My God'

I think both Suede and the Manic Street Preachers are the only two bands who's b-sides stand along side the albums songs.

Package shots:

http://www.superdeluxeedition.com/pi...ew-pack-shots/

If they sound half as good as they look, we're in for a treat - they've even made 'A New Morning' look (somewhat) appealing!

My understanding is there are legal issues preventing the re-release of that and "Art", but I also know the band kind of hates them as well. (They're also not very good, but that has nothing to do with their re-release status.)

I think both Suede and the Manic Street Preachers are the only two bands who's b-sides stand along side the albums songs.
"Only two" is way strong, but Suede were certainly more consistent than most, even during the latter albums when they were putting out more b-sides than album tracks. I know people love the first record, but I kind of view it in the same light as I view Blur's 'Leisure' - they had used up the majority of their strongest tracks on the early singles to the album is the a-sides surrounded by their lesser material. 'Suede' is obviously a much stronger album than 'Leisure', but even the most die-hard fan of the album has to admit that most of the b-sides from the first three singles KILL most of the album tracks.

“Answers to some of your questions

The DMS period gig from october 1994 in Paris was Richard’s first ever with the band and so it seemed appropriate that it should be on the Coming Up re-issue as it was with that line-up even though it featured songs from the previous album.

Digging a Hole and Weight of the World were not included due to lack of space. There are only 80 minutes of space on a cd and too many b-sides from that period to fit them all on. Even though these songs were released as Suede songs, they were essentially Neil’s solo material, all written and performed entirely by him. Therefore they seemed the least relevant to a Suede re-issue and so were the first to see the gleam of the editors knife.

The omission of other material ( Be My God, the Down demo etc, etc) was also due to lack of space. The songs we eventually included, although often sketchier and more lo-fi, seemed more interesting.

Music Like Sex is included on the HM re-issue as the song was originally written during that period but not revived and finished until later.

I hope you will all enjoy these re-issues. I think there’s some absolutely fantastic stuff on there . Personal favourites include the full length Asphalt World, the version of Just A Girl with Justine singing backing vocals, the Paris gig of 1993 when the original line-up played songs from DMS for the first time live, the 96 Roundhouse show, mine and Richard’s 4 track demo of Beautiful Ones and a hilarious stage invasion of the Black Session in Paris in 99 .

Some of it sounds very rough and sketchy but the whole point of this for me was to show a glimpse behind the mask.

Thanks

Brett”

Another post from Brett Anderson, on why the Dog Man Star Reissue doesn't have the promo videos for that album on the DVD disc:

let's just clear this up once and for all. the DMS videos weren't included on the DVD of that album because we didn't think the line up in the videos was relevant to Dog Man Star . given the complex history of the band there was no neat solution here. keeping the line-ups relevant to the body of work that they were responsible for was seen as the best way to structure this. there was no sinister power struggle going on , just a desire by everyone involved to try and present our legacy as coherently as possible .
we thought including the tour films from that period, which for me have far more artistic worth than the promos, more than compensated for their absence.
apologies to the completists, it's an imperfect solution to an imperfect problem but there you go

At least they're acknowledging what they did and why instead of saying "Here you go, fuckers. Take it or leave it."

yet for Brett to say there wasn't enough space for the extra songs seems like a bogus excuse since the 'Sci-Fi Lullabies' (B-side album) tracks are ALL included - essentially replicated, they could have easily decided to forgo some of the songs and include the more obscure b-sides that didn't make the 'Lullabies' cut.

Maybe they're expecting these deluxe editions to replace 'Sci-Fi Lullabies' completely, as someone could just buy these and have everything in it. It'd kinda suck to buy these and then still need to buy Lullabies for the handful of songs that didn't make the cut.

And by "not enough space", I took it to mean that there was a finite amount of space, and they frankly didn't like the tracks that didn't make the cut all that much (excepting maybe the Neil solo tracks, which may have been a diplomatic move).

Still, for something as comprehensive as these editions are, it's a shame they didn't bundle them into a set with 2 bonus discs (1 CD/1 DVD) including the songs/videos that didn't make the individual reissues. Or hell, release a separate 2 disc set of the odds and ends for diehards to pick up.

The point of these - if I understand what Brett has been spouting off about correctly - was to give complete pictures of the albums and their respective time periods. So, yes, while there is a lot of material we already have - especially in the case of 'Coming Up' - they're a necessary part of the bigger picture.

Any of the released b-sides that they didn't include are easily obtainable on a $3 CD single - and, really, those two Neil tracks are not good at all. The "Down" demo on CD would have been nice, but its exclusion certainly isn't a deal breaker.

I'm more annoyed that you'll still have to hang on to 'Sci-Fi Lullabies' (for the re-recorded "Europe Is Our Playground") and 'Singles' (for the re-recorded "Trash") if you have a need for every released version of the songs.

So it looks like owners of "Lost In TV" should hang onto that disc. (And for those who own it, I hope you know how to access the behind-the-scenes of the band recording "Positivity" as an easter egg)

Re: (London) Suede double CD/DVD deluxe editions - 2011 releases

My copy of 'Suede' arrived this afternoon and the packaging is lovely - lots and lots of care put into these. There's a bit of compression/limiting going on from looking at a waveform, but there are also more peaks and valleys than some recent remaster jobs - ahem, Duran Duran - so it's not ideal but also nowhere near as bad as it could be. (I gave a quick listen to "He's Dead" and "Where The Pigs Don't Fly" on my stereo while ripping CD1 to the computer and it wasn't noticeable to me.)

I can't wait to dive into the DVD this evening, and this isn't even close to my favorite Suede record. Watch out when 'Coming Up' & 'Head Music' eventually land - I won't leave my house for days!

My copies shipped today. Hopefully they don't take too long to show up.

Got Suede and Dog Man Star yesterday. Great packages. I love the demos and having all the b-sides in the same package. Haven't watched the DVDs yet but will be getting to them soon.

I've also put together playlists of the "Alternate Suede" tracklistings that Anderson put in the liner notes. It's pretty clear that Edsel did these reissues right. Looking forward to the other albums.

Re: (London) Suede double CD/DVD deluxe editions - 2011 releases

My copy of 'Dog Man Star' arrived on Saturday. Haven't had a lot of time with it as we were traveling this weekend but I have the second disc a quick once over in the car and even in that atmosphere I can tell that the long "The Wild Ones" is probably the best thing this line up of the band ever did.

'Dog Man Star' is my second least favorite Suede album - too unsuccessfully OTT for my likings in most places - but even still there's plenty to love about the packaging. I hate how "Asda Town", "Together" and "Bentswood Boys" got pushed off to the 'Coming Up' set since they're not Anderson/Butler compositions and they wanted to keep the whole package that way, but it's totally lame because they're going to fit in even less with the 'Coming Up' material. Also, lame to cut off the last minute of "Stay Together" while keeping all 16 minutes of "Eno's Introducing The Band" - surely that falls in the "not a proper full-band" moment like the solo Neil tracks that got cut from 'Coming Up' and 'Head Music'.

So still some small frustrations with the track list choices, but from what I've heard so far what is here is fantastic.

Edit: I'm watching the live show on the 'Dog Man Star' DVD and they've cut "She's Not Dead" - you get the very tail end of it right before "So Young" starts. I thought they claimed these shows to be complete but obviously - between this and the early fade on "To The Birds" on the first set's DVD - that is not the case. Again, not a deal breaker but kind of annoying and good to know ahead of time.

Re: (London) Suede double CD/DVD deluxe editions - 2011 releases

'Coming Up' arrived this weekend - while 'Head Music' is my personal favorite, admittedly for some sentimental reasons, I think that this represents the creative peak of the band. The track list for the album is perfect and - while there are some clunkers hidden amongst the b-sides - you could make an equally as strong 10-track companion album from the extras. (Try: Every Monday Morning Comes/Have You Ever Been This Low?/W.S.D./The Sound of the Streets/Europe Is Our Playground/Money/Sadie/Graffiti Women/This Time/Another No-One) "Asda Town" on disc one and "W.S.D." and "Feel" on disc two are early fades from their original versions - some might argue "Feel" still isn't edited enough - and the one extra track is a fascinating curio but probably not something you'll listen to all that often.

In any case, my favorite of the reissues so far and highly recommended...especially if you were considering stopping after the first two. You'd be totally missing out.
