Roland Emmerich’s ANONYMOUS
Don't care much for Emmerich but it's a interesting trailer:
The film stars Jamie Campbell Bower, Rhys Ifans, David Thewlis, Joely Richardson, and Vanessa Redgrave.

Anonymous is a political thriller which also involves the question of who actually wrote the plays of William Shakespeare. It follows Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford (Rhys Ifans), and is set against the backdrop of the succession of Queen Elizabeth I (Vanessa Redgrave) and the Essex Rebellion against her.

This looks hilariously stupid. The opening line in the trailer reminds me of Owen Wilson in Royal Tenenbaums:
"Everyone knows Custer died at Little Bighorn. What this book presupposes is... maybe he didn't."

Re: Roland Emmerich’s ANONYMOUS
I guess nobody bothered to see this after all? Or maybe it just wasn't worth commenting about.
Anyway, I watched it tonight. The period detail was outstanding and felt authentic, Rhys Ifans was great...and pretty much everything else was laughably preposterous. There are some very serious allegations against some very notable historical figures, and the movie could have used a major dose of (intentional) humor.
Favorite moment: The wife of Ifans' character tearfully exclaiming, with dead-serious horror and contempt, "My God! You're...writing again!" I nearly choked on my drink.

What, exposing Shakespeare as a fraud wouldn't destroy the entire culture of America? Junior high english teachers would have to rely exclusively on Silas Marner and The Return of the Native to turn kids off of reading forever.

I just saw it and thought it was excellent. All the actors did an amazing job, particularily Rhys Ifans.
The back and forth time lines took a bit getting used to at first. However, seeing part of Shakespeare's (De Veres?) plays performed got me to see why people are so passionate about the work and why it's taught in schools.
I also liked how every character was nuanced, it wasn't purely the good guys vs the bad guys. It was a tragedy just like the plays.
