The back of the cover indicates it has been enhanced for 16:9 televisions.

Criterion didn't issue an anamorphic DVD until 1999 (Insomnia, spine #47)...all widescreen movies before that were letterboxed.
They were also pretty late to the Blu-Ray game as well, IIRC.

They have since re-issued most of those early spine numbers. The House of Games DVD was released in 2007.

They were late to Blu because they waited out the format war which was smart on their part since they didn't waste resources on an obsolete format.
