American Idol, March 23/24 ’11. Top 11, Motown Week

It’s Motown Week on American Idol and thanks to the “no audience during rehearsals” rule they started last week there are no song or performance order spoilers to give.

Wednesday: Two hour performance show, 8/7c
Thursday: One hour results show, 8/7c

Jennifer Hudson will be performing on Thursday, and the country band Sugarland will perform at some point this season (maybe this Thursday). Also, Will.i.am (of the Black Eyed Peas) will be on the show next week (Top 10) to sing a song from the 20th Century Fox animated film, "Rio."

In other news, So You Think You Can Dance Season 8 premiere will be a two hour show on Thursday, May 26th, the day after Lauren Alaina is crowned the new American Idol Champion. Mary Murphy is back in the judges chair.

Someone needed to tell Stefano that was awful.

Totally agree. This was Stefano's week to shine but that song ate him up (Hello / Lionel Richie).

Haley didn't do too much better. The only one who has done well so far in my opinion as Jacob Lusk though I missed the first two singers.

Who were the first two singers?

I'm going to miss tonight's show. Fox should put Idol on Hulu.

I liked Casey, but he's getting worse/old every week. Lauren is getting better likely to win it all. Scotty could use a stage coach, he's ruining his voice with the goofiness.

I just watched Casey's performance on YouTube, his is my favorite performance of the night so far.

And his friend, Megan, has quite the tongue:

I agree.

When Niama performs i have this urge to watch Predator afterwards.

My favorites of the night:

James
Lauren
Casey
Paul

Pia has an incredible voice but I'm bored with the ballads from her.

Bottom 3 for me:

Jacob
Stefano
Thia

Tops:

James (his best by far for me)
Paul (also his best performance...i really like this guy. He's the first AI contestant i've ever said "I'd buy his record")
Lauren
Casey (but he's fading...he's like that guy last year(?) whose wife died...with they stupid glasses every week and turns out he had some weird church thing or something....whatever. but he started hot and faded....which is what I think Casey will do.)

Bottom:
Stefano was awful
Pia is boring
Thia is even more boring
and Jacob doesn't deserve to be here, but he's starting to annoy me.

It was the headband or something tonight...i'd never noticed it before, but the second they focused in on her it was a total Predator vibe w/ her hair.

Casey was good, but his singing was overshadowed by his obnoxious stage presence.

Paul had his best performance by far tonight. This was the only time I thought he totally nailed it.

Bottom 3 IMO
Naima
Stefano
Pia

Re: American Idol, March 23/24 ’11. Top 11, Motown Week

What a douche Seacrest is for making Stefano's Mom feel bad!

It's one thing for his dumb ass to complain about her pasta being 'too garlic-y' but to then carry around her sad little tupperware container and use it for some tacky schtick bit with Gordon Ramsey (who just happens to be sitting in the audience!) is just mean-spirited and totally unnecessary.

And then to have one of the producers clearly heard over his earpiece loudly telling him, 'The Mom is unhappy...'

Duh! Your asswipe host just humiliated her on national TV.

What a jerk. This show is a shadow of what it once was, not that it was EVER that compelling but at least a few legitimate singers broke through.

I can't see any single one of this year's crop being one-tenth as talented at Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson or Carrie Underwood.

Re: American Idol, March 23/24 ’11. Top 11, Motown Week

It was right after he talked to Ramsey before they cut away to commercial. I don't know if the audio was coming from his earpiece or just broadcast accidentally but it was definitely heard by anyone watching the west coast broadcast. I happen to be in LA watching on Time Warner.

The voice sounded like the same production chick who sometimes banters with Ryan at the beginning of the show running off stage as the show starts. I think he said one time her name is Karen? Just another sign of how sloppily this show is put together....

I was never a fan of the Ryan/Simon/Paula love triangle with its gay undertones that they dragged out over the show's first ten years and I don't know why insist on write these stupid filler segments in between performances! JUST SHOW US THE CONTESTANTS SINGING THE DAMN SONGS! That's why we watch you jackasses!!!

heard it too, maybe not over the earpiece , around when Gordon was making faces and they briefly showed the mom.
Jacob was the clear winner tonight for me. Yes, he's a little fem. OK a lot fem, but that was amazing.
As much as I want to like Paul I feel like he's going to go home. I love his voice but he needs to sit his ass down and sing so he doesn't freak everyone out with his drunken "moves". I hope he stays though.
Personally, I think just based on the performances tonight, Thia should go. It was the most forgettable. Everyone else stood out for being great or not so great but I had a hard time even remembering what she sang and I just watched it.

Re: American Idol, March 23/24 ’11. Top 11, Motown Week

Casey - The Wolfman continues to unimpress. Nothing about the tone of his vocals sounds all that pleasing to my ear.

Thia - still just too StarSearchy for me, nothing ever feels like she's connected with anything she's singing.

Jacob - just sounded too gospel-like, not enough motown. Please, stop with the "low-end" runs, they sound bad.

Lauren - She really knows how to work the room in a comfortable manner that doesn't feel fake. Good performance from her tonight. Still the front-runner for me.

Stefano - still over-sang the song to a ridiculous level. Very self-indulgent performance.

Haley - must all girls named Haley try to garner votes by wearing super-short outfits? Odd song choice, sort of all over the map. Needs to be reined in too. She's got a little bit of that Punch-Drunk Paul stage staggering going on.

Scotty - I can't watch him perform anymore, it's just too distracting. Odd arrangement with the countrification of the song. Meh.

Pia - she sings well, but not unique enough to seek out on an album. Just leaves me cold.

Paul - Not as punch-drunk, which was good, but hate his vocals, so he's a lost cause for me.

Naima - The pace was too slow for half the song, and she was scooping them low notes something fierce. But, probably her best performance to date, and brought some good energy to the show, nonetheless.

James - Made the most of the pimp spot tonight, delivering what only James can deliver, a rocking version of a motown hit. Solid performance, probably also a finals contender along with Lauren.

Re: American Idol, March 23/24 ’11. Top 11, Motown Week

I'm surprised noone mentioned this, but I am almost positive that Paul sang

"I'm a masturbator" in his performance. I fell out of my chair laughing. Jimmy Kimmel even pointed it out in his show tonight.

Much better week than last week.

Loved Lauren. She really reminds me of a young Kelly Clarkson. She did a great job with that song.

I also think James, Pia, Jacob and Naima were pretty good. After several lackluster performances, I think Naima redemmed herself tonight.

Even though I thought Pia did a solid job vocally, I agree with some of you that she needs to stop with the ballads in the evening dresses. She really comes across as robotic and cold sometimes. Lauren kicks her ass in the personality and attitude department.

You know I like Jacob and thought he did well tonight, but he really hasn't had a kickass vocally controlled performance since he did "God Bless the Child" during Hollywood week. I can see how he can come across as way over the top and annoying.

I fucking hated Stefano this week. Easily the worst performance. Butchered one of the best love songs of the 80's and he sounded ridiculous.

I was fine until last week when my wife mentioned a resemblance to George Bush.

That's all I could think of last night; but it's actually more like Frank Caliendo doing his Bush impression.

Yeah, I mentioned a few weeks back that he looks just like Will Ferrel's Bush to me.

Spoiler:
complete waste of a save. If I was one of the bottom feeders who is in danger next week, I would be pissed off if I missed the tour because douchebag got the save. I am glad Casey got taken down a lot. He was annoying and cocky and indulgent.
