I haven't seen an animated Disney film flop that bad in... actually, have any started this bad?

Battle: LA looks right on par with what I'd expect it to do. I'm more amazed anyone would spend money on Red Riding Hood.

Holy hell, Mars Needs Moms tanked something fierce. I didn't think that it would be huge, but never would've guessed it would be that bad. Its budge was $150 million. That's gotta hurt.

Imagine what Mars Needs Moms would've made without IMAX and 3D

According to Deadline, the (terrible) first screening of Mars Needs Moms for Disney brass is why Imagemovers got killed by the company.

Good riddance. Fuck Robert Zemeckis and his motion capture shitfests.

Mars needs Moms just looks creepy

Zemeckis is just scarily behind the curve on this mocap stuff, despite being one of the first guys to really champion it.

Mars Needs Moms is awful and I'm happy to see it tank. I think there was a grand total of 30 people who came to see it at my IMAX all day yesterday. Really pathetic showing.

I think though most theater managers with IMAX screens are glad to finally get rid of 'I Am Number 4' - thankfully it's a quick turnover to the next IMAX release 'Sucker Punch'

I Am Number 4 opened bigger than Mars Needs Moms did. And at least it was 2D so it was easier for me to thread.

Very! Although I think it will continue our streak of showing bad movies.

I though Sucker Punch was 3D? Not that I'm complaining since I won't see it either way.

Ignoring the Ghibli films Disney has released domestically, both Pooh's Heffalump Movie and Valiant opened in 2005 to about $6 million.

Of course, if you added the production budgets, marketing budgets, DVD manufacturing costs, oh hell basically anything they spent on those movies...combined...it would still probably cost less than Mars Needs Moms.

I guess famous names really DO matter in Disney animation. MNM only has Seth Green and Joan Cusack.

I wouldn't say that...it's not like Tangled had any particularly famous names either.

Seth Green only did the mo-cap work, too. His voice was dubbed over for the release.

It couldn't have anything to do with the film being terrible and all the trailers being annoying as hell or anything.

I think this is the first Disney film in a long time that my family didn't want to see on opening weekend. We saw the trailers and agreed pretty much together that it was a pass.

I just went to Tangled and the theater was packed, do these things make much of their "cheap theater" runs?

Once they hit discount theaters it can add a good $1m or so depending on the title.

that's not what he said on Conan a last week. He said that was the plan initially, but they ended up using his voice afterall.
