Director Tony Scott Appreciation Thread & Poll
Personally, I'm a big fan. I'm curious which of his films are the most-loved. I've seen a lot of people complain about his style, specifically during the Enemy of the State to The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 era. Unstoppable was far more subdued, which hints that he may be steering away from the hyper-kinetic shots and cuts, but who knows for sure. Kiefer Sutherland recently mentioned that Tony Scott may be attached to the 24 movie, but I'm still not convinced that that movie will ever be made anyway.
So... a poll. He seems to have done a number of shorts and TV episodes, but I'll leave those out of the poll. Just feature-length films.
The Hunger (1983)
Top Gun (1986)
Beverly Hills Cop II (1987)
Revenge (1990)
Days of Thunder (1990)
The Last Boy Scout (1991)
True Romance (1993)
Crimson Tide (1995)
The Fan (1996)
Enemy of the State (1998)
Spy Game (2001)
Man on Fire (2004)
Domino (2005)
Deja Vu (2006)
The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009)
Unstoppable (2010)

Good director. I voted True Romance because he took Tarantino's script, didn't fuck with it one bit, shot it as written while giving it his trademark directoral look and polish. Great movie. The Hopper/Walken scene alone is classic.
I also enjoy The Hunger, The Last Boy Scout, Crimson Tide, and Spy Game as really good movies.
Deja Vu is goofy but really fun.
Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop II, Days of Thunder, Enemy of the State, and Domino are all shit.
I haven't seen the others...

^Didn't he change the ending of True Romance? I vaguely remember Tarantino saying that it's not the way he wanted it to be, but respected Tony Scott's choice.

TRUE ROMANCE is the only Tony Scott film I've ever liked. And it's good only because it was written by Quentin Tarantino and Scott didn't screw it up.
(Another Tarantino script suffered when directed by someone who screwed it up by trying to make it his own, NATURAL BORN KILLERS. And I always liked Oliver Stone before that film. But not after.)

I voted True Romance - but The Last Boy Scout comes in at a very close second.

True Romance, though I'm completely crazy because I also like Domino
Oddly enough I've never seen Man On Fire. Is it worth checking out?

Re: Director Tony Scott Appreciation Thread & Poll
Haven't seen:
The Hunger (1983)
Revenge (1990)
Crimson Tide (1995)
Days of Thunder (1990)
Least favorite:
Top Gun (1986)
Decent enough:
Beverly Hills Cop II (1987)
The Last Boy Scout (1991)
Deja Vu (2006)
The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009)
Thoroughly enjoyed:
True Romance (1993)
The Fan (1996)
Enemy of the State (1998)
Man on Fire (2004)
Domino (2005)
Unstoppable (2010)
My top pick:
Spy Game (2001) - I don't know exactly what it is about this movie, but it's one I've watched countless times, and I never get tired of it. The Fan, True Romance, and Domino are right behind it.

Tony Scott is terribly hit and miss for me. I love The Hunger, The Last Boy Scout, and True Romance (especially True Romance), but hate stuff like Top Gun, Man On Fire, Domino, and so on. I'd say he has more misses than hits, but the hits are substantial enough that I can't dismiss him out of hand.

Tony and Ridley's movies are usually good. Always worth checking out. I watched Revenge for the first time a few weeks ago. The climax was fucking epic. It was one of those movies that hides everything underneath. It's a lot about what happens off-screen and inside the characters. Michael Mann does the same thing.
I also love the way they produce and do business. With interviews, commentaries, etc. they give a real feel for the business, which I've taken a lot from.

Awful director who lets his style actually get in the way of the movie. Crimson Tide is my favorite of his, but with a cast like that pretty much anyone could have directed it satisfactorily.

True Romance. I can't stand his current directorial style. Domino was utterly unwatchable because of the camera work and Man on Fire was close.

Man on Fire by default since it's the only movie of his i own (on blu-ray) in my collection and I don't even care for that movie much. Just a tiny fan of his i guess (real tiny).

No, again on the DVD/BD there's commentary by Tarantino saying he actually preferred the Scott ending.

I voted for Crimson Tide. He really made the opposing protagonists & the tension stand out without the use of quick edits, uneven filters or odd camera angles.

Yup, Tony and Ridley are some of my favorite directors; I enjoy the camera work, bleaching, and audio-warping of Spy Game, Domino, and Man on Fire. Not really interested in seeing Telham, but I do need to see Days of Thunder, The Hunger, and Unstoppable.

I went with Spy Game - I've seen that movie countless times and still really enjoy it. I easily could have picked True Romance which I also love but figured it'd score huge in the poll without my vote. I pretty much enjoy even the most hollow/mindless of Tony Scott's flicks.

I like most of his movies, but True Romance is his best IMO.
