I really can't wait for SDSU/UNLV. I went to Vegas 2 weeks early.

A little FYI for those of you with Directv, they will have the NCAA tournament games on TruTv in HD on channel 246-1. I was worried that we were gonna be stuck with blur vision

At least. I'd like to see Kent State go down. 13 or 14 doesn't matter all that much to me if they end up in DC which I think they have a 25% shot at given the way things are looking. But knowing my luck, they'll go play SDSU in Tucson or some crap like that.

Maybe, but you're looking at it in a vacuum. Think about who they can jump. Maybe Cuse. But ND and PIT are trumping on strong regular seasons. BYU won. SDSU is winning. Florida won. Texas won. There's not a big opening available. I figure the winner might get to a low 3 and displace Cuse. I had UConn and L'ville on the 4 line coming into today.

Regardless, you might want to scout my alma mater. ;)

Every time you guys complain about Weber, I feel sad and a little guilty. It all comes back to Dean Smith, though. If he hadn't been so gung-ho to strong-arm and guilt-trip Roy Williams to UNC on that second go-around, Ol' Roy would still be at KU, you guys would still have Bill Self and those Tar Heel assholes would have had to find themselves their own man. On Jordan's legacy alone, they would have still gotten all the prime recruits and been just fine with a smidgen of patience. Every one would have won. Sorry it panned out the way it did for you guys.

Self would have left for somewhere else. He was not going to stay at Illinois for a long period of time.

He's a terrible analyst.I'm sad I missed that. He was bitching at somebody in hushed tones before his loud outburst. He's horrible though. Brent made the mistake yesterday of mentioning Pat Knight's firing, which started Bobby bitching about how "unfair" that situation was before Musburger had to cut him off finally. Definitely good for laughs.

#3 Washington vs. #1 Arizona
#2 Texas vs. #1 Kansas
#6 Akron vs. #1 Kent State (at Cleveland)
#2 San Diego State vs. #1 BYU
#7 UC-Riverside vs. #1 Long Beach State (at Anaheim)
#6 Grambling State vs. #1 Alabama State (at Garland, TX)
#9 Connecticut vs. #3 Louisville
#2 Boise State vs. #1 Utah State (at Las Vegas)

Bubblelicious games:

SEC:
Bama vs. UK -- Bama can really solidify their standing and reduce their PiG chances with a win.

ACC:
Both semis -- Clemson is the last one IN on B101, so a win would certainly help protect against any outlier bid thefts. I'm still not sold on VT - who knows how the committee will look at the win over FSU w/o Singleton. A win today over Duke would remove any doubt.

A-10:
Rich/Temple -- Richmond is a lock (if not already) with a win today. But there will definitely be a potential spoiler in the title game Sunday.

B1G:
PSU/MSU -- PSU has made a move this weekend and right near that cut line. Can one more win here put them over it? At the least, it gives them a shot at the auto.

WAC:
Pretty simple. Bubblers should root for Utah State.

I don't know who makes up that blog  (ESPN has a blog for everything), but I don't see that. I won't get into the absurdity of calling these 2 'giants.' He's too good of a tourney coach and no matter who they play in the 1st round, they'll have the best player on the floor. They win the games they're supposed to win.

WallyOPD
03-12-11, 09:54 AM
Here's a link to their methodology, including the "giant" definition:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=6194614

A few key quotes:

First, as always, some definitions. A Giant Killer is a team that beats an NCAA tournament opponent seeded at least five spots higher in any round. Squads from the six BCS power conferences are ineligible. We also exclude Butler, Gonzaga, Temple and Xavier -- nationally-ranked schools with lots of recent success, who aren't sneaking up on anybody. (Note that mathematically, any team seeded fifth or higher in its bracket, as San Diego State will be this year, cannot be a Giant Killer.) A Slain Giant, on the other hand, is simply a team that loses to a Giant Killer.

[...]

if we aim our newly fine-tuned model backward in time and aggregate its predicted odds, it says there should have been 28.9 Giant Killing upsets since 2004. There have actually been 29. And it named the following teams as the most likely Giant Killers in each year: UAB in 2004, Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2005, Bradley in 2006, UNLV in 2007, Davidson in 2008, Cleveland State in 2009 and Old Dominion in 2010. Every one of those teams did go on to slay a Giant.

We still can't explain why Kansas lost to Bucknell in '05. () Luck is a huge factor in upsets. But to understand the part of the story that can be told, stay tuned.

FWIW, their top 10 GKs this year, in order: Belmont, UNLV, ODU, GMU, UAB, UNM, Richmond, SMC, St. Peter's, and USU.

Of course, UAB probably won't be dancing.

That's just beyond stupid. Sorry, blogger dude, but a 12 beating a 5 is not a Giant killer -- I don't care what schools are playing.

Process of elimination....we already slayed the Cuse dragon at the Dome (after Boeheim moved it away from the originally scheduled neutral site) in 2005 and I like Boeheim. Therefore...... ;)

That being said, if we draw Cuse in DC, I won't be greedier than that.

Looking at the other PiGs, here are the lowest RPI qualifiers so far:

190 - UALR
148 - UNC Asheville

Today's potential qualifiers with a chance of landing in a PiG:
240 Stony Brook vs. 132 Boston U.
207 Morgan State vs. 163 Hampton
201 UTSA vs. 147 McNeese
263 UC Riverside
313 Grambling vs. 271 Alabama St.

Hopefully, with the expansion, the PC nonsense ends, although if Hampton wins, they might be able to legitimately avoid it depending on how other things shake out.

Here's how remarkable that Wisky game was last night. There were 621 major conference regular season games this season. There were 4 games with under 53 possessions:

51 poss West Virginia @ Villanova, Feb 5
50 poss Wisconsin @ Northwestern, Jan 23
49 poss Ohio State @ Northwestern, Jan 29
48 poss Notre Dame @ Pitt, Jan 24

How many in last night's game? 42. I'm no statistician but I believe that's what you would call a statistical outlier. That basically averages out to nearly a poss per minute of play.

I was thinking about this in my head, playing the what-if game, if the UK job was open (and given Tubby's standing, it would have been), yeah, you're probably right, but better jobs than Illinois are few and far between.

You're right. I just think it was more Self going back home than wanting to stay at Illinois. He is a Big 12 guy. He played at Okla. St, was an assistant there and Kansas. I think a lot of Illini fans knew if a job opened up in that conference esp. Okla, Okla St, Kansas he was a goner.

I'm really curious to see where Penn State is seeded...I'm pretty sure today's win puts them in, but based on many of the updated projections they are still being placed in the play-in round. I can't seem to understand why they are getting put behind Illinois and Michigan St. when they have a harder schedule, better record, better rpi, and will have split with Illinois and won 2 of 3 against MSU. Hopefully, they can win tomorrow and make this a moot point.

At least winning with UConn's path is harder. 5 wins in 5 days, the last 4 all over ranked opponents is just crazy.

They just better not tank it starting next weekend. They've been good all season not slipping up to teams they were heavily favored to beat. Their worst loss is probably Marquette, which is pretty damn good for a worst loss. Yeah, it's just a transitional conference. UND, who won with a great shot, will join the Big Sky next year* and USD joins the Summit.

Good point. That's just a hell of a lot of games in a short time period. And they looked a little tired to me against Louisville, especially down the stretch. Though to be fair, every Tourney winner plays three games in three days or four in four. It's not like it's that big a difference. Still, it seems like their particular path was very difficult to the Big East crown. I thought it might have drained them a little both physically and more so emotionally. Then again, in 2009 Syracuse made it to the Sweet 16 and U Conn went to the Final Four after that 6 OT game, and if that's not exhausting, I don't know what is. We'll see soon enough, I guess.

I just don't want to have to stare at their score in Red Dog's sig for the rest of eternity if they get ass-raped by Bucknell.

Don't expect much movement on the bubble Sunday, as most of the at-large hopefuls with "work to do" have bowed out of their respective conference tournaments. (To save confusion, at this point, "work to do" really just means "on the bubble." Cool?) But there is one big game to watch. That game is the A-10 tourney final between Richmond and Dayton. The Spiders are a lock at this point; Dayton is still way outside the bubble.

You know what this means. Yes, there's a bid thief on the prowl. If the Flyers can topple the Spiders on Sunday afternoon, they would steal a bid from one of the teams currently on the bubble and cause the selection committee to reconsider and reshuffle the bevy of bubble hopefuls below Richmond in the at-large hierarchy.

In other words, if your favorite team is still unmercifully on the bubble on Sunday, you just became the world's biggest Richmond Spiders fan. Congratulations.

The ESPN guys were doing a blind comparison last night to try and determine the fourth #1 seed. The teams vying for this spot were: North Carolina, Duke and Notre Dame. I've used the categories the ESPN guys chose and added a fourth team to the mix that no one even mentioned: SDSU.

It's easy enough to figure out which team is which by looking up their RPI over at realtimerpi.com. But take a look at the numbers first and try to figure out why SDSU wasn't even in the conversation.

Team #1:
RPI: 3
SOS Rank: 32 (may now be 22 from what I've read)
vs RPI Top 50: 7-2
Road record: 12-1

Team #2:
RPI: 6
SOS rank: 10
vs RPI Top 50: 5-4
Road record: 7-3

Team #3:
RPI: 4
SOS Rank: 31
vs RPI Top 50: 7-2
Road record: 6-4

Team #4:
RPI: 7
SOS: 18
vs RPI Top 50: 11-5
Road record: 5-4

Addendum: Note that road record is only true away games. Neutral court results are not included.

Just some interesting food for thought.

SDSU DID win the MWC regular season. Did you not get the memo? ;)

Look at the numbers. There's no way those other teams match up statistically, and considering that the Aztecs only lost TWO games all year long (both to the same Top 10 team, whom they crushed last night by 18) it's hard to legitimately argue against them.

Most teams have a bad loss or two to a non-Top 25 team. The Aztecs don't. They've won every game they were supposed to win - many in dominating fashion. They've earned a #1.

Well, 1st weekend,, that's a lock: Tucson. For them to be in Anaheim 2nd weekend, they'll need to be on the upper half of the 2-line. I haven't redone my top-quarter of the S-Curve since Friday, but I don't think I have them that high. I think the OSU game is meaningless for OSU re: resume. KU: higher RPI, higher SOS, one less top-50 win, but 4 more 51-100 wins. Same number of losses, same record vs. top 25. KU should be your overall #1 based on the numbers. Then add in the fact that the committee can basically get down to business without worrying about the B10 game.....(which also is another way of me saying don't expect PSU in a PiG).

Now for the SDSU homers, if Florida and UNC lose as they will, that's potentially great for you if you're targeting Anaheim.

Trust me. I am looking at the numbers. I'm afraid you're the one looking with your heart rather than head. If you could beat sexually-active BYU, then we could talk about SDSU being a #1.

Again, SDSU has no bad losses. They only have two losses all year long, both to the same Top 10 team. Everyone else we're talking about has a bad loss or two to a NON Top 25 team. SDSU doesn't. That's something that has to be factored in as well. SDSU's RPI is at the top and their strength of schedule is darned good as well.

32-2 is damned impressive, especially the way that the Aztecs did it.

Regardless, don't get so hung up on whether you're a 1 or 2. It ain't a big deal.
True. They shouldn't be any lower than a 2, and as long as they stay out West I'm OK with a 2.

When you look at the numbers I posted I just think they should at least be in the conversation as a possible #1.

But the problem is you only beat one top-25 team - and that was a sex-starved BYU (who drilled you twice prior when getting sex). So yes, no bad losses, but no signature wins. Don't get me wrong - I like SDSU a lot....I can't envision picking against them the 1st weekend.

The Aztecs beat everyone put in front of them. Remember, the schedule is made up years in advance. St. Mary's and Gonzaga would have been signature wins but those programs are merely good rather than the top tier (often Top 25) that they occupy most of the time. That isn't SDSU's fault.

Again, all I'm saying is that a team with their 32-2 record, their RPI, their strength of schedule, etc, should be in the conversation among the group that is vying for the #1 seeds.

I'm fine with a #2 as long as it's out West. They've earned at least that much.

Clutch OT win by the UW Huskies after almost blowing the game on missed FTs. After a disappointing regular season, I hope they've salvaged a decent seed.

What I had on Friday morning:

Just took a shot at the top of the S-Curve.

1a - KU - San Antonio (Tulsa)
1b - OSU - Newark (Cleveland)
1c - N. Dame - New Orleans (Chicago)
1d - Duke - Anaheim (Charlotte)
--------------------------------
2a - Pitt - Anaheim (Cleveland)
2b - Purdue - New Orleans (Chicago)
2c - Florida - Newark (Tampa)
2d - SDSU - San Antonio (Tucson)
--------------------------------
3a - UNC - San Antonio (Charlotte)
3b - Texas - Newark (Tulsa)
3c - BYU - New Orleans (Denver)
3d - Syracuse - Anaheim (DC)
--------------------------------
4a - Wisconsin - Anaheim (Denver)
4b - UConn - New Orleans (DC)
4c - L'ville - Newark (Tampa)
4d - UK - San Antonio (Tucson)

Note: I had the true order of the 3 line: BYU-TEX-UNC, but didn't want to put BYU and SDSU together and didn't want to give Texas the San Antonio advantage. Plus BYU has to go to Anaheim or New Orleans for their Saturday game requirement.

The Pitt/Cuse same region thing is goofy, but with 11 in there, 3 of the regions are going to have 3 Big East teams.

Updated. This is me; not a committee projection:

1a - KU - San Antonio (Tulsa)
1b - OSU - Newark (Cleveland)
1c - Duke - New Orleans (Charlotte)
1d - N. Dame - Anaheim (Chicago)
--------------------------------
2a - SDSU - Anaheim (Tucson)
2b - Pitt - New Orleans (Cleveland)
2c - Florida - Newark (Tampa)
2d - UConn - San Antonio (DC)
--------------------------------
3a - Purdue - San Antonio (Chicago)
3b - UNC - Newark (Charlotte)
3c - Texas - New Orleans (Tulsa)
3d - L'ville - Anaheim (Tampa)
--------------------------------
4a - UK - Anaheim (Denver)
4b - BYU - New Orleans (Denver)
4c - Wisconsin - Newark (Tuscon)
4d - Syracuse - San Antoino (DC)

I think this fits the parameters. But correct me if I'm wrong.

A few notes:

- I don't think SDSU is 5 on the S-Curve, but I inserted them there to break up the 2 Big East teams there (I think Pitt and ND are 4/5 on the S-Curve). Don't know if the committee is willing to give SDSU the natural geographic advantage over a shipped-in team. Had Florida won, I would have swapped them and SDSU.

- I can't believe UConn jumped that much, but they seemingly earned it.

- I really struggled with UK. But I put more emphasis on regular season play.

And honestly, I think those are the top-16....I think it's a clean cut between the 4 and 5 line. Had AZ won yesterday, it might have mucked it up.

They won at Pitt. Did better at MSG. Then look at the numbers. Better RPI. Better SOS. Better record vs. top-50, better record vs. top-100. No question IMO. That being said, I think Pitt is better suited for a tournament run.

I won't quibble with that and it makes the committee's job easier to just throw 2 Big Easters on the top line. The problem is that, objectively, Duke's resume looks better than Pitts IMO. That doesn't mean I think Duke is better, but going off the numbers....Duke is 8-2 and 9-2 vs. the top 50 and 51-100. Pitt can't touch that despite being in the loaded Big East.

RPI goes to Dook
SOS is equal
Pitt has 1 more road win
Pitt has 4 more Top 25 wins
Pitt has 2 more Top 50 wins
Dook has 3 more Top 100 wins
All 5 of Pitt's loses came against the RPI top 32
Pitt won the Big East
Dook won the ACC and the tourney

It's definitely razor close between these 2 and Notre Dame. Will be interesting to see where the committee goes. My money is on Dook for them.

Not sure where you're getting your numbers. I've got Pitt with 1 more top-50 win and 6 less 51-100 wins.
