Finally, an MGM MOD title I want
The Digital Bits is reporting that a long awaited title (one that I thought might never make it to DVD) is coming out via MGM's MOD line, 1986's C grade "Body Slam."
However, having never bought one of these titles before, perhaps someone who has can fill me in.
You can only get these titles online, yes?
Are they typically OAR?
Any bonus features at all?
Regular DVD case or some kind of cheap paper slip?
Then this line confused me;
"20 new classic and deep catalog films are about to be added to the studio's MOD line-up this month"
So does this mean it'll be available this month? How long does a title usually take to show up for order on amazon.com after MGM announces new releases in this line?

They are OAR, anamorphic, and they come in a standard DVD case. They are not progressive scan, and the DVD is made from the best master print available, which is generally pretty good for films made in the last fifty years, but not great. There usually is no remastering or restoration. The ones I've bought, the audio and video quality is comparable to a mid-range pressed catalogue title of the same era. The artwork appears like a regular DVD, with cover art on front, credits and a brief plot synopsis on back. There may be a trailer, but otherwise there's no extras.

I don't recall seeing any MOD in a physical store. Not surprising considering the decline in DVD shelf space and the low-velocity nature of this titles.

The only MGM MOD disc I have seen is The White Buffalo. Same quality as WB Archive, although no menu. Movie starts automatically and then begins replaying at the end.

I have the White Buffalo. The first copy froze up half-way through the movie. I returned it for another copy and it played ok, but only in one of my two DVD players. The other player it won't play in at all. I just said the hell with it and kept it and only play it in the one player. i'll never pay $20-25 for these things, but i will try them out at $10 and an occasional $15 if i really like the movie. Those MOD disc's that cost $20-25, they can shove them. I'll never buy another one at that price.

Sometimes cool specialty stores will have MOD titles. Scarecrow Video in Seattle buys a certain number of Warner Archive titles. From MGM, I know they got in Rolling Thunder.

There is* a little jazz record shop on Church Street in Bangalore that rents Western DVD's. Their non-new release section is organized by nation and director. This leads to oddities like Scarlet Street being placed with the German films and Casablanca in the Hungarian section.
*or was - it's been a few years since I've was last overseas.

"Body Slam" arrived yesterday. It's in widescreen, only extra is a trailer (which is in full screen.) DD 2.0 audio. PQ is about as good as you'd expect which, frankly, isn't half bad. Even if MGM had given this a BD release, I'd doubt it'd ever look terribly good.
All in all, I'm pleased with the release.
