Worst DVD Experience ?
I was wondering what your worst dvd experience was. Scratched discs, missing discs, double discs, discs that wouldn't play even if the surface was in perfect condition, etc. Mine ? Other than the misframed Back To The Future discs from a few years ago and a few disc from my Fraggle Rock set that won't play all the episodes, I don't really have a huge one.
Edit : I forgot about one. I ordered a movie listed in new condition. Even before I opened it, I could tell there was a problem. There was a rip and some wrinkles on the cover. When I opened it, it was a 2 disc case, but the movie is only available as a single disc. The disc was extremely scratched, but did play. Luckily, I got my money back. Not only did I have all these problems, the disc was in the case upside down !

The Simpsons Season Sets - I have purchased 12 seasons and have had to have 6 of them replaced because there was some problem with 1 or more discs. And, I mean a real problem - a problem which kept a disc from playing through to completion.

My wife and I were watching State Property several years back. It's not the best movie in the world, but we were engrossed nonetheless. About 15 minutes away from the end, the disc starts pixelating and freezing up. I was furious. It was my first bad experience with a disc and it just stuck with me through the years.

Years & years ago I purchased this since it was the only R1 release of Repulsion. I was so looking forward to watching it since I had never seen the film before. OMG what a travesty. The video & audio was worse than VHS. I was so pissed. Fortunately, it went out of print and I was able to sell it for a good ammount.

Universal's Casino debacle.
Freezing/pixel'ing like crazy towards the end of the movie. Returned the disc back to Wal-Mart for another copy. The same problems occured with the new copy. Turned out to be an entirely bad shipment.
Had to go a number of months Casino-less.
Ended up buying a re-released copy elsewhere long after. But while the movie now plays just fine, there isn't as many extras on the new disc as there was for the 1st release.

Walmart had an exclusive 3-disc release of the George Jones 50th Anniversary Tribute Concert. The concert was on 2 DVDs (I don't know why, since it would easily have fit on one) and there was a CD containing about half of the song performances. I can watch the DVDs on the portable player, but neither our regular DVD player nor our Blu-ray player will read the discs.

The only thing I can think of is buying a factory sealed copy of Bogus (1996) from Big Lots only to find the disc missing when I opened it. Managed to find another and exchanged it with only a little trouble.

I've gotten more damaged discs from the public library than I can count. I've sent a few letters to the people who run the library urging them to hold people accountable for damaging discs, but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears. In the 70s I used to get kids' records from the public library near me, and my parents made it VERY clear that I'd have hell to pay if I damaged any of them in the slightest.
"Casino" probably holds the record for most defective copies. I had to exchange mine twice at the store and they wouldn't take it back after that, so I sent the 3rd copy to Universal. They sent me a replacement which played fine when I got it, but it froze up when I watched it again later. (I've since gotten the HD-DVD, the old DVD might play fine on my newer players too but since it's 3 hours long I don't have time to watch it that often. Someone recently gave me "Casino" on laserdisc too!)

Re: Worst DVD Experience ?
Mine would have to be when I bought one of the early volumes of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. I bought it from Walmart and came home to find that it contained duplicates of one of the discs and of course missing one because of that.
I took it back and they had me go and pick up another copy. They opened up right there at customer service to find that the new copy also had this error. So they sent me back again, and the exact same thing.
I think I went back a few more times and I think they were ready to just issue me a credit or something when the last copy I brought up was complete and correct.
I think that including my original returned copy I went through about 4 or 5 copies to get a correct one.

Re: Worst DVD Experience ?
The first time I watched The Last House on the Left the damn DVD jumped all over the place, so much so that it skipped entire scenes, and since it was a first time viewing, I couldn't even tell what was going on.

I guess the only one that comes to mind was "unrated" version of American Pie.
I got into dvd before the entire unrated theme came about full on.. and I owned the rated version of American pie. So then the unrated comes out and I'm like.. wow, wonder what else they could have added to make this unrated. So I buy it and don't notice a single difference.
I was like, haha.. they tricked me. Otherwise I don't recall having too many, if any, defective discs.

Re: Worst DVD Experience ?
About 7 or 8 years ago i used to go to Blockbuster. I would rent out titles about once a week. Being a typical Blockbuster many of the discs would be scratched, would not play and i would end up going back to exchange the discs on a frequent basis. A lot of these would be Criterion movies. Well after a while i got tired of the hassle and simply stopped using them. About 6 months down the line i get a letter in the mail saying i owe Blockbuster $800 in destroyed discs due to scratches. I was livid. I went back to the store with the letter and spoke to the manager and he tried placing the blame on me. I always take great care with DVDs/Blu Rays etc when i have them and never even touch the surface of the things. I really went to town on this guy after telling him that i had complained about the discs on numerous occasions myself. I ended up just saying that i would certainly never use the store again and if he wants to try and take me to court over the discs then he was more than welcome to try. When i heard that Blockbuster went bankrupt last year i was very happy indeed. They don't deserve to be in business.

Re: Worst DVD Experience ?
When a film has scenes missing has to be my worst experience. Mainly PD titles, but I've picked up a couple of Latin movies from Best Buy that were hacked & when I tried to return them, it was difficult, I had to try several stores before one allowed the return. The worst defective problem was the director's cut disc in the Close Encounters 3 disc set, I've had 4 copies, every one freezes then jumps to a later scene in the film.

I have to agree here. I've gotten some discs from Netflix that looked as if they were dragged behind a car down a street!

Netflix Blu-ray has proved less problematic than DVD, fortunately.

Ha! it was slow but I'm a sucker for anything with Chris Lee, or Hazel Court in a low cut dress!
Oh, and I will add another one, that sucked but could have been a disaster: I had the Shout Factory disc for Big Bad Mama 1+2. Had a hard time getting it out of the case (like, I am cursing a storm, and I know how to work hubs), and it was dark, so when I finally get it out I don't really look at it I just popped it in the PS3.
Won't play.
Eject the thing and it is cracked from edge to hole in one crack, the only thing holding was one millilayer of art/disc. I am lucky this thing did not disintegrate mid spin and ruin my PS3.

Ive had a few Netflix issues, including a couple where the disc could not even be read. But Netflix was always good about sending me another copy.

Re: Worst DVD Experience ?
I've had two Netflix discs that I requested again due to their inability to play. Netflix's response has been sufficient, but I hate the fact that I feel as if I'm being punished since they send the second disc out as if it's part of the regular queue, holding up the next title in line longer than necessary (until the replacement is returned). It should be their quality control that is at fault, and due to such, they should send a replacement disc outside of the queue ..as a little bonus for their error.
