Re: Rolling Stone Readers Poll: Top 10 albums of the 90's

In an interesting twist of fate, newly-appointed Smashing Pumpkins bassist Nicole Fiorentino has admitted to being one of the two girls on the cover of Siamese Dream. A former member of Spinnerette and Veruca Salt, the 31 year-old musician says she was initially reluctant to tell Billy Corgan the news, fearing that he wouldn't let her join the group. [NME.com]

Without even opening this thread, it was easy to call about 7 out of 10. REAL easy.

Metallica's "Black Album"...

Is that true? If so that would be epic.

Metallica's "Black Album"...
Agreed. I would say Buckley and Mellon Collie were the only surprises.

With the exception of "Loveless" by My Bloody Valentine I'm actually ok with that list.

That was actually a joke started by Billy on his twitter account. Just further proof you can never trust nme.

Use Your Illusion 1 & 2? I don't know. There's a lot of filler in there.

Even you got rid of all the crap/filler and included only the best songs to make one single "Use Your Illusion" album, it wouldn't even be in the Top 100 90s Albums.

I strongly disagree. You could make a great 12 song album out of those 30 songs.

I'm not debating the merits of UYI, but I do know I could not have gotten through the 90's without Estranged. Shit, to this day it's one of my favorite songs. Time to spin that up!

There's actually a 1-disc compilation called "Use Your Illusion" available but I think its existence has more to do with the need to have a "clean" version of the album then any kind of desire to have a carefully-sequenced condensed version. It's like it was easier to do then putting out two edited versions.

But I love the full "Use Your Illusion" even with all the self-indulgent nonsense. One thing that makes it even more absurd is that it was released when vinyl was still a viable mass-market product (as opposed to the niche that it is today, though plenty of new releases get a vinyl edition) was that it actually spanned 4 albums/8 sides. To follow a standard-length LP with that as your sophomore release is almost insane.

So yeah, I don't think there's a great 12-song album hiding in a big jumbled mess, I think the whole thing is perfect in its own "not only can we do a 9-minute song, we can do 4!" kind of way.

What would have happened to you if that song never came out?

Ha! And I think that's what I love the most about those songs: the length. They just felt so epic to a young boy trying to find his taste. Bombarded with my dad's classic rock (in the 90s) station in every outing, these were a nice change of pace. On the flip side, I moved from GNR to punk (name The Descendents) where songs average 36 seconds long.

Bon Jovi? I don't know. Luckily I don't have to know.

I am listening to UYI2 now thanks to this thread. I forgot how many "non-song" parts there are here. And Get in the Ring is just ridiculous. Axel comes off like such a tool to me in that song.

I strongly disagree. It's a terrible album or double album.

As I am listening through this record again, I think many of the songs could use some triming, but I still think you could pull out a great single album from what is there. I will admit that there is a lot of crap though.

Man, I have so many memories come back when listening to 'Siamese Dream'.

Those were some wild times...

Terrible list of course. As big a joke as RS and its readers are.

I prefer Gish over the two SP albums on the list.

I own every record on the list save Jeff Buckley - Grace. Also, SD>Gish>MCIS.

Re: Rolling Stone Readers Poll: Top 10 albums of the 90's

Hmm, let's see now.

1- Nirvana - Nevermind - released in 1991
2- Radiohead - Ok Computer - released in 1997
3- Pearl Jam - Ten - released in 1991
4- U2 - Achtung Baby - released in 1991
5- Oasis - Whats the Story Morning Glory - released in 1995
6- Smashing Pumpkins- Siamese Dream - released in 1993
7- Metallica- Black Album - released in 1991
8- Jeff Buckley - Grace - released in 1994
9- Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness - released in 1995
10- Guns and Roses- Use your Illusion 1 and 2 - released in 1991.

Certainly skewed to the early part of the decade, isn't it. Hell, half of it was released in 1991. Says something about the decade in music, to be sure.

The only album I would keep from that list is Achtung Baby. Then I'd fill out the rest of the list with some really amazing albums from the 90's.
