Untitled Shark Thriller 3D (Ellis, 2011)
From Shock Till You Drop:
It's somewhat sad when Hollywood cannot even come up with a title for a film.
David Ellis, who directed Snakes on a Plane, is at work on another nature-run-amoke thriller which was originally called "Shark Night" but has now simply adopted Untitled Shark Thriller until a new title comes along.
And a new title will come along, right?
Perhaps not. NY Mag says Ellis, and Relativity (the distributor), might just roll the film out on September 2 with Untitled Shark Thriller 3D.
"I hated the original title [Shark Night 3D], too," Ellis told the mag, "so at our weekly production meetings, I made everyone on the crew come up with names — Chums, Fins, Terror on the Lake — but they all seemed kind of cheesy. And so until I hear a better name, I like what we've got right now: Untitled 3D Shark Thriller. The title says everything you need to know: 'We’ve got sharks.' 'It’s in 3D.' and, 'It’s a thriller.'"
There you go. The studio suits seems to be keen on that.
Starring Sara Paxton, the film concerns a group of college friends spend a weekend at a house on the lake, only to find that danger lurks beneath its waters.
****************************************************************
If someone makes a movie about sharks, you can be sure I'm going to see it. I'm 'meh' on the 3D, but watching nubile teens being eaten by sharks will never get old. But if this is a house on a lake, are they going to be Bull Sharks? I want Great Whites, dammit.

If they want to be accurate then only Bull Sharks can live in fresh water. Maybe the location can be a saltwater bay so we get Great Whites.

Even though Snakes on a Plane was a monstrous disappointment, creature features, especially aquatically themed ones, I cannot resist. As a former child obsessed with everything sharks, I share you concerns... but surely, there will be some sort of throwaway explanation as to why a 25ft White is terrorizing kids in a lake. Just like in Jaws 4 when they take the effort to scientifically explain why a Great White would follow a family thousands of miles to the Caribbean. Revenge.
Don't give a shit about the 3d. Hopefully, the flick is in the same spirit as Piranha 3d... gory and fun. This time let's hope Ellis doesn't miss the mark, like with SoaP.
Also, I think "Chums" is a brilliant title, surprised it was dismissed. I'm a sucker for puns.

Ellis has a mixed record, but he did manage to make "Final Destination 2" more fun than it had any right to be, so I have some hope here. I agree with making it more like "Piranha 3D" in that I'd like to have a large group of kids partying, that way we get to see lots of people get eaten.

For half a second I thought Bret Easton Ellis was going to direct a thriller about sharks, and I got so excited.
And then...
And then...

The Meg books are frickin awesome. There are SO MANY scenes from those novels that I'd love to see on screen. With a few minor changes (especially the ending) I think the first Meg book would make an awesome movie...or take some of the best parts of all 4 books and just merge them together if sequels aren't in the cards.
Unfortunately I don't think the movie will ever get made though. Bummer.

Anyway, Jan de Bont, of Speed fame, was set to direct at one point and I believe Roland Emmerich's name was mentioned at one point too. I mean those are big name directors and there was talk of it getting a $100 million budget as well, so we're not talking about those shitty SyFy movies or anything. It was supposed to be a big deal, but it's just been languishing for years and I don't know what the problem is.
I absolutely loved the books and will keep reading them as long as Steve Alten keeps writing them, but like I said, maybe they're just not very popular and nobody is willing to take the risk of adapting an "unnpopular" book series into a $100 million movie. But I've been waiting for the Meg movie for years and years.

I read somewhere that this was to be PG-13, which killed all my enthusiasm for it. Maybe that was bullshit but this trailer doesn't look too badass, so I'm sure that was true.

Looks terrible, but could be terribly fun. Since after the first attack everyone would just stay out of the water (I assume), is there also some angle where someone is feeding these kids to the sharks? I got that vibe.

Ummm...the best shark movie ever made and probably the ONLY shark movie that's even halfway watchable is rated PG and would be rated PG-13 at the most if it came out today.
