Halo: Combat Evolved remake - November 15, 2011

Halo: Combat Evolved remake coming this holiday

Joystiq has learned that the previously rumored remake of Halo: Combat Evolved will indeed launch this holiday season for Xbox 360 with a full visual overhaul. Sources explain that the re-release is not Bungie's 2001 Xbox game simply running at a higher resolution -- it's being remade with new art assets. While Halo's audio will likely remain unaltered, the controls will allow for more recent Halo configurations.

The Halo: Combat Evolved remake is allegedly being developed by New Jersey-based Saber Interactive, the company behind TimeShift and Namco's upcoming Inversion, but we've been unable to confirm the nature of the engine powering it. We understand that it's something other than the Reach engine.

The Halo: Combat Evolved update, one of two Halo games currently in development under the watchful eye of 343 Industries, is expected to support 1080p resolution and 3D televisions. Details on multiplayer are supposedly still being worked out, but we understand the remake will likely feature online co-op (the original game supported two-player split-screen co-op).

The game is expected to re-evolve on November 15, 2011, ten years after Halo: Combat Evolved launched alongside the Xbox. Our sources didn't know of any plans to similarly upgrade the recently disconnected Halo 2, but it's hard to imagine Microsoft playing favorites with its biggest franchise.

I'm down, but why not use the Reach engine? I'm also glad they'll be updating the controls.

Still my favorite Halo

Despite the repetitiveness, it's one of the few FPS games that felt like it was taking place in a living breathing world.

Wow, really? Look, it's a fine idea and I support this sort of thing, but what else does Microsoft have on their exclusive radar for this year? That's better left to a different thread, but they've been losing a lot of ground lately.

I like the fact that 343 Industries is also working on a completely new Halo game while overseeing this remake. It's the 10th Anniversary of Halo and it's a great way to celebrate it.

No talk of it being optimized for kinect? :lol

Loved the original, but worry how a remake on a different engine by a different studio (that I've never heard of) will turn out.

Exactly. Face it, there are a ton of people that went through last gen without an Xbox and missed out on it. They'll rope in those that missed out plus all the regular Halo buyers.

This sucks. They should've remade Halo and Halo 2, and released them as one game (à la God of War).

Sold.

Now I want a remake of Halo 2... it was the best in the series for multiplayer.

What's the probability that unlike Sony's remake, this gets released with a full $59.99 MSRP? 99.5% or higher?

I'm sure a Halo 2 remake is already on the drawing board. But yeah they should be on one disc.

If it was both Halo 1 and 2, I'd say they'd go this high. Just the first and it'll come in at no more than $39.99 (which is what it should be with both anyway).

I'd play through it again for achievements.

I don't mind this recent wave of remakes/rehashes. Not everyone got to play the originals.

Re: Halo: Combat Evolved remake - November 15, 2011

I'm intrigued. If this has the feel of a modern Halo game, I'll give it a chance. But last year I played the original Halo for the first time, and couldn't get into it. There have been so many improvements to the FPS gameplay, and this last gen game didn't hold up very well.

Probably the aspect that killed it for me the most was all the backtracking. Almost every mission seemed like this:

"You need to make your way deep into an enormous alien bunker. Battle through a gauntlet of enemies. When you reach the bottom, flip a switch. Then turn around and come back. BTW, all the enemies have regenerated, so you've got to kill them again. And when you're done, we got more bunkers for you that look almost exactly the same."

If it's like that again, I'll pass.

mmmm...pretty sure they aren't making a new game so, yeah, the backtracking will remain.

If this is just an HD rebuild, then yeah it'll be the same game. But if they are actually remaking the game, then there's no reason they need to re-use the exact same missions and level structure.

But this is the first I've heard of it, so I have no idea what they're planning.

If they don't use the same missions and level structure then it's not Halo.

Why would a remake need to be identical to the original? Look at the King Kong movies. The same story and yet each remake is unique. People can argue about the quality of the newer versions. But at least they weren't a shot-for-shot rehash of the same movie.
