Warner Brothers/Joel Silver to produce Lethal Weapon Reboot

http://www.deadline.com/2011/01/warn...weapon-reboot/

Warner Bros and producer Joel Silver have set Will Beall to write Lethal Weapon, with a take that will relaunch the buddy cop series with a new cast. Beall, a former LA police officer who patrolled South Central and wrote the novel L.A. Rex, has seen his stock rise at the studio because of his script Gangster Squad, the period crime drama about an elite crime squad that fought against organized crime kingpins like Mickey Cohen. Zombieland helmer Ruben Fleischer has come aboard to direct that film.

Warner Bros has been messing around for some time with Lethal Weapon 5, with a treatment written by original scribe Shane Black. The plan was to bring the original team back, but schedules didn't match up and Mel Gibson's image has taken a self-inflicted beating. Beall pitched a take that maintains the tone of the original--a hard R-rated edgy street cop movie.
Let the....."Fuck Hollywood" "Worst Idea Ever" comments begin.

If your not familiar with Will Beall, he's also a writer on the show Castle

I'd rather have a reboot over another sequel. LW3 was lacking, and LW4 was just completely awful.

Depends on the leads. Gibson and Glover were great together.

I'm sure the script will go through several re-writes/writers before it officially gets greenlit. It is good that they hired a former LAPD Cop to pen the 1st draft to get the ball rolling.

I don't really care, since I'm getting too old for this shit... add that to the fact that the Lethal Weapon franchise sucked donkey dick.

Hey at least Mel Gibson won't be involved. So it's already got that going for it.

Why not just call it something else? It would be pretty hard to find another pair that had the same chemistry being Riggs and Murtaugh as Gibson and Glover had. And I wonder if they'll get the Donners to be involved? Sure the original series lost its luster after part 2, but a reboot? We already have this on tv each week in Hawaii Five-0.

The name is what'll make the film money, not so much the story or who's in it. Many remakes don't need to use their predecessor's name, but the marquee value is most of why they do it in the first place.

Re: Warner Brothers/Joel Silver to produce Lethal Weapon Reboot

I find it vaguely promising that they're aiming R-rated and slightly intriguing that (at least, based on how the Deadline blurb is written) they're using parts of Black's Lethal 5 script, but I'm not very interested. I liked all four Lethals, but the fact that the fourth one was fun (at least to me) seemed like enough of a miracle. There's not enough specific meat on the bones, in my opinion, for remaking, so unless it's got a brilliant pairing of lead actors, I'll pass.

The Lethal Weapon series isn't Lethal Weapon without Mel and Danny, IMHO.

Agreed, but JSP will buy tickets because of the name. WB knows this.

Re: Warner Brothers/Joel Silver to produce Lethal Weapon Reboot

I'm curious how they would go with the casting...

Ryan Reynolds and Jamie Foxx?
James Franco and Terrence Howard?
Chris Pine and Idris Elba?
Bradley Cooper and Laurence Fishburne?
Seann William Scott and Martin Lawrence?

I can't wait to skip this, and when it comes out on Blu, I'm a first day not pre-order.

I don't see that. This is much different than having a number of actors playing James Bond. I think since Mel is associated with the name, especially now, it becomes a double edged sword against a reboot.

"Oh, that Mel Gibson movie? I don't want to see it. What? He's not in it? I don't care to see it anyway."
