Did the American New Wave filmmakers really save Hollywood?

Title says it all. I've been wondering this ever since I saw the documentary "Easy Riders, Raging Bulls". I know the New Wave filmmakers did bring radical changes to Hollywood after the studio system started collapsing and infused a lot of fresh blood into the industry, but I can't help but think Hollywood would have eventually gotten out of it's slump without them. Thoughts?

No. Hollywood wasn't saved. Look at your local cineplex marquee for the answer.

I think..Hollywood would have gone forward either way. Look at the stuff that we love from the 80s. A lot...bears no influence from those new wave directors.
