I heard these were really good. Or maybe I'm thinking of the other Simpsons comic "event"
It is really really good. Extremely well done, and funnier than anything the Simpsons has done in well over a decade. And the hardcover is really well made with a nice slipcase.

It's pretty good. It does hit the well worn territory most any book about writers does with Grimes going on about how he thinks he isn't good enough, but I'm enjoying it otherwise.
Aaaaaaand gonna join the fray one this one as well. Just cracked open the first 10 pages.

I hated the book, I thought it was soulless drivel with empty characters. But I get why its so popular and the inevitable movie will only make it more so.
Right behind you. I thought the first one was pretty good.
I didn't have high hopes for the series, but was pleasantly surprised. The first one had a little bit of a slow start, but it really picked up and I enjoyed the story. I found myself caring about a few of the characters and engaged in the story.
I'm about halfway through the 2nd book now. It's been decent, a little less on the action and more focused on political issues, propaganda, etc.
Edit: Finished this (not a really long book). I thought the first 2 were really good, the third one I thought was generally pretty mediocre, and irritating as well.

I heard an interview with Broaddus where he describes this book as putting the "urban" back into urban fantasy, which otherwise consists of white chicks shagging vampires and killing werewolves (or vice versa) in cities that are about as racial diverse as Helsinki.

I finished the second book last night. Will be starting on the third on tonight.

How was it? The only Doolittle I've read was BURN (didn't really care for it).
I thought it was an above average debut novel. I will read more Doolittle.
I finished it on Wednesday. I really liked it. I had seen the movie years ago and saw a documentary about the trials. I really liked how Berendt told the story of the people he got to know in Savannah.

I haven't read anything in years. I suppose the last thing would've been the novel-only sequel to Jason X or the last Harry Potter book. I don't like to read.

Back to the Batcave by Adam West with Jeff Rovin
West's style is pretty straightforward and the pace is fast; I made it to page 65 in a couple hours before deciding to stop and try to sleep. Given how difficult it is for me to concentrate enough to read while I'm (again) working on this obnoxious vitamin D deficiency, that's pretty impressive progress for me these days!
The description looks really interesting. I'd love to hear your opinion once your finished.

Stayed up late last night and finished Back to the Batcave by Adam West with Jeff Rovin. Reviewed here (http://travismcclain.blogspot.com/2011/01/back-to-batcave-by-adam-west-with-jeff.html). Much easier going than Alec Guinness's A Positively Final Appearance, though how much of that is because I was more familiar with--and interested in--Batman and how much is my vitamin D level finally starting to normalize, I can't say.
I'm not sure what's next. I've bought several comic books lately, and was given a stack of old Green Lanterns by a friend, and might thumb through those for a bit before committing to another book.
I started it last night, a couple hours after finishing Under the Dome. I'm just past page 50, of 260.

I just finished reading it earlier today. I first learned about the book when it was reviewed by Entertainment Weekly. I had never read the fiction books by the author but the description of the memoir sounded very interesting and I wrote the book down on list I keep of books that sound interesting and found it recently at Borders.
I like the book. It was a hard book to read because the author shows the different stages of emotions he through over the years and there were times it was hard to like the author but eventually you sympathized a lot with him.

Ummm actually now that I started it, I think it's the "bastardized" version. Is there really that big of a difference? Should I look for the original?
How many pages is it?
Actually, the unabridged version has a newer forward from King that explains why he re-released it that way.

I wouldn't worry about it. Some, like me, just hated the revisionist 'modernization' of an already classic book. It's a bit like a music artist re-recording something 10,20 or 30 years after the fact and saying "I now want this to be considered my definitive version . . . it's what I meant to do." Yeah, right. :)

With the Stand, the original release is correct and the "uncut" version is the bastardized. King did a really half-assed job updating it. For example, there's a reference to Stu serving in Vietnam; in the original release, that would make him 30, while in the revised edition it makes him 40. King should've cut the reference, but he overlooked it and now the relationship with Stu and Frannie is a bit creepy.

I don't want to instigate anything political in this thread, but yesterday I saw a thing in the news about how President George W. Bush is "through with politics" and wants nothing to do with the spotlight anymore. That reminded me that I still hadn't started Second Acts: Presidential Lives and Legacies After the White House by Mark K. Updegrove, so I cracked it open late last night. I read the introduction (which seemed extraneous and repetitive) and then the first chapter, about President Truman which I really enjoyed. I'm really looking forward to the rest of this one!

I heard about it on an episode of the Stuff You Missed in History Class podcast, and turned up a copy at Half Price Books. It's been sitting on my bookshelf for months, so I'm glad to finally get to it. Plus, after Alec Guinness and Adam West it's a nice change of pace.

Not sure on the pages as I'm reading it on my kindle, but I know it's the updated version because it had the forward in it.

Cool, I'll have to check it out.
