Rank'em as You Hear Them (2011 Edition)

2010 Rank 'em as You Hear Them Thread

The 2011 Rank'em as You Hear Them Thread

The rules are simple:

This thread is for ranking albums that are released in 2011 only. This does not include reissues or albums that you have purchased/heard for the first time this year but were released in prior years. This does not include albums released at the end of 2010 or that you just discovered in 2011.

Keep your list in one post (edit!) and keep them in some sort of order. See the second post for my system.

Note: Please don't use a "placeholder" post if you don't actually plan on updating your list. You know who you are!

This thread is to post lists but feel free to discuss the music too. Hopefully we can introduce each other to some good music this year!

I'll try but I failed miserably last year at keeping up with this.

Re: Rank'em as You Hear Them (2011 Edition)

2011 New Releases
none... yet...

Pre-2011
Spoiler:
JANUARY
Various Artists: Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World (2010): Like the movie, this album only gets better every time I revisit it.
Blood Red Shoes: Fire Like This (2010): One artist featured on the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack. Not as poppy as Metric or Pretty Girls Make Graves, but I like it.
Jay Malinowski: Bright Lights & Bruises (2010): Bedouin Soundclash without the... umm... Soundclash? Mellow. Excellent.
Hammock: Longest Year EP (2010): Spacey ambient fun.
Solar Bears: She Was Coloured In (2010): Weird. Retro?
Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin: Let It Sway (2010): One of my favourite albums from 2010. Fantastic!
The Knife: Tomorrow, In A Year (2010): Post-ambient Opera-core? I don't know. Very strange; not in a "good" way. I think.
Ryan Adams: III/IV (2010): My first real exposure to this guy. Seems... prolific? Any recommendations on his back catalog? PM me.

I always have lofty intentions, but then fall way behind in updating these posts. But one of my resolutions this year is to keep on top of it.

Re: Rank'em as You Hear Them (2011 Edition)

Close enough to the end of the year that I can post my top 10 list:
1) And So I Watch You From Afar - Gangs: Amazing post-rock from Scotland. Easy album of the year choice.
2) Fleshgod Apocalypse - Agony: Unbelievable tech-death with classical influence. Stunning from start to finish, and an easy #2 pick.
3) *shels - Plains of the Purple Buffalo: I hadn't heard this band before but I was completely blown away. Pretty different than the usual post-rock outfits.
4) Explosions in the Sky - Take Care, Take Care, Take Care: Possibly my favorite EitS album, despite how blasphemous that sounds.
5) Grails - Deep Politics: More really interesting post-rock near the top of my list.
6) Devin Townsend Project - Deconstruction: Worth the two year wait. Brutal, hilarious and impressive from start to finish. Plus it has a song called "The Mighty Masturbator."
7) The Atlas Moth - An Ache for the Distance: Just recently discovered this one, but I can't stop listening to it.
8) Moving Mountains - Waves: They dropped the post-rock influence for something more post-hardcore. Some fans were upset, I say it was a genius move.
9) Russian Circles - Empros: More top flight post-rock from the Chicago band. Almost as good as Enter.
10) Leprous - Bilateral: Avant-garde metal. Fun, weird and heavy.
