Just how is it done? Is it easy? In other words, can I upgrade the firmware without taking it to my local Best Buy or tech store? BTW-I have a Toshiba 3109 and had occasional sound dropouts during playback of the DTS track of T2:UE.

Firmware upgrades should only be done by an authorized service center or by the manufacturer itself. Check to see if there is a local authorized service center, a good place to start is the place you bought it from. If this is not a possibility you will need to contact Toshiba and ship it to them to have it done. It is definitely not something you can do your self.

I just sent my 3109 back to toshiba for replacement. It was crapping out on a bunch of movies at the layer switch. For me, it aint a firmware issue, as these movies played fine when I first got the player. BTW, the only way to get the firmware update is to send your unit to some shop in atlanta. I think the labor is $50. But if I recall correctly, I think several people have reported sound dropouts in T2 DTS, so it may not be your player. Press zoom,6,0,6,zoom with no disc in your player to get the firmware version, the latest is 3.0...I think.
