Not a bad hold, considering this is a 2D pic. Also remember that Paranormal Activity 2's Friday figure from a week ago included over $6M midnight shows, ergo the steep drop.

3. Red (Summit) Week 4 [3,349 Theaters]

I didn't even paste Finke's stupid commentary on this weekend, because, well she's a stupid bitch when it comes to the realm of hard-R rated films (it's been documented time and time again that she's against them) and that of "torture porn." Her comments for Saw 3D are pretty negative, but I don't think $28 million is underperforming; especially when Lionsgate had it pegged at $25 million and the last entry made only $14 million on its opening weekend. I feel, on both counts, that's an improvement and possibly overpreforming based upon expectations.

I'm curious now to see if Paranormal Activity 2 can actually cross the $100 million mark like its predecessor. It's almost a given that 3 will be hitting screens next October based upon the fact it pulled in a profit for Paramount on day two, but I wonder if it'll have the legs to make it to the $100 million mark.

However, Jackass 3D hit the $100 million mark? As much as I'd love a Jackass 4, I don't think it's going to happen based upon the age of the crew.

Who's the "Katie" you reference in your header? Is Katie Holmes in PARANORMAL 2? And what assets does she have that are so "phenomenal?"

^ It's the star's name. I guess that means she shows her bare behind this time around.

For those that have partaken in both Paranormal Activity threads (for the first film and now the sequel), the conversation has always gone off course and we begin to talk about Katie (the star and character's name) and her breasts.

In Paranormal Activity 2, she ends up in a bikini.

So that means in Paranormal Activity 3, she'll show more; right?

she has nice assets, but she was in 1, at least, a little on the thincker side in terms of overall body, a little butterface and never really did anything for me.

Social Network quietly chugging along with another 30% drop. $90 million is a lock, but I'm not sure it can reach $100 mil during its current run. It might need post Best Picture nomination re-release to get there.

That's a pretty good redemption for Saw 3D after the poor Saw VI return.

What's the point of pointing out Paranormal made $6M on midnight shows? Those were Friday showings (just really early Friday) so why wouldn't they count them.

They filmed enough footage from 3 to make a sequel. Supposedly it's set to come out next year.

Agreed. Companies need to stop making smart, entertaining and well paced movies in favor of shit like Twilight where it's a sure $200m lock.

This is a crappy top ten list. I wish better films were playing right now. Red looked decent, and is maybe worth a rental. The Social Network was a genuine work of art... but I already saw it twice. The Town was good, but somewhat over-rated nonetheless. The rest doesn't hold any interest for me.

If only I had a local art house theater or something...

Big for Saw, Jackass and Social Network.

Look forward to a nice fat set of Saw movies now that the theatrical films are complete. This is still planned to be the last one, correct?

I would say this is definitely the last one: even with the hefty 3D bump, a $22 million opening is fifth-best for the series, beating only the original and last year's woeful $14m. I'm sure it will plummet next weekend, too. I haven't done the math, but frankly, without the 3D, it doesn't look like this did significantly better than last year's entry.

I think it is safe to say that when it comes to horror movies, as long as the previous one turned a profit, another one will be made.

I don't know if they do that anymore. They seem pretty intent on getting a speedy DVD release nowadays, but I do agree with that being the best bet for continued success.

It's safe to say that Dunstan, Melton and Greutert are all checked out from the franchise. It's also safe to assume that Hackl and Bousman wouldn't come back pretty much eliminating the entire creative crew that made the franchise work.

Remember, the name of the game was to cap the franchise at VIII; however, due to VI's poor box office performance, Dunstan and Melton had to combine their ideas for VII and VIII into one screenplay. It also didn't help when Hackl got sacked for Greutert, Greutert forced last minute changes to everything.

I've seen six out of the top ten films of the week (Saw 3D, Paranormal Activity 2, Red, Jackass 3D, The Social Network and The Town) and the only one I wouldn't recommend out of the six would be Paranormal Activity 2. I feel that's more consistency of quality films than most other weeks in the year.
