Alice in Wonderland: 60th Anniversary - 2/1

In other release news today, we finally have a street date for Disney's Alice in Wonderland: 60th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray. Look for it on 2/1/11. All the extras from the previous DVD release should carry over, along with new content created just for BD. Here's a look at the cover art...

And likely the 3D version the same day. Cool. Nice to see Disney catching up, but wouldn't this get more notice? We typically know like a year or two when these Platinum titles come out.

Excuse me? 3D version of the 1951 AIW? I know they did a 3D Beauty and the Beast, but I wasn't aware they were going back and doing the old classics.

And isn't this NOT a Platinum? I thought Bambi was next spring's Platinum.

I think he meant the 3D bluray version of the live action Alice, which is for now a sony bundled exclusive. I think Gizmo is saying that most likely both the animated Bluray and the live action 3D bluray will street on the same day.

And yes this is NOT a Diamond title, hopefully this wont turn out to be like Dumbo this year, which was released everywhere but the US.

How is Alice not a Diamond? I'm really confused how Disney rates some of these films. Is it by Box Office draw?

And yes, I meant 3D of the live action flick.

Nice!

I don't own any of Disney's previous releases of the film, so I'm excited.

I think it's only a Diamond if they've already released a Platinum edition. But I don't think Alice ever got a Platinum. Yes, it's stupid...

Re: Alice in Wonderland: 60th Anniversary - 2/1

This was my favorite era of Disney animation, 1950-1959. Which includes "Cinderella", "Alice in Wonderland", "Peter Pan", "Lady and the Tramp" and "Sleeping Beauty". I just feel the colors were so striking. And the animation at it's very best.

I don't get these level of releases. Diamond, Gold, Coal. How do they get picked for each? Critical reviews? Box-office? Longevity!??

Re: Alice in Wonderland: 60th Anniversary - 2/1

The original Platinum titles were the (then) 10 best-selling titles. In no order, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Snow White, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, 101 Dalmations, Lady and the Tramp, Bambi, and The Little Mermaid. Later, they planned to add Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, Fantasia, and Pinocchio, but these would take a while as they were still getting the original 10 out.

Then they switched gears again with the Diamond titles, and I'm not sure what it includes, beyond the original Platinum titles. I think they decided not to give any titles a second Platinum release, so that's why Sleeping Beauty and Pinocchio got Platinum releases when they hit BD, but when it was time for Snow White, it was called Diamond. However, Fantasia never got a Platinum, and the upcoming BD apparently isn't a Platinum either, so it seems it was dropped from that line. I think they might have ended the Platinums altogether and replaced them with the Diamonds.

I'm confused too.

For fuck sake. I'm sorry I asked. But thanks!

And FWIW, I'll buy most on BD. Just release them all.

getting it on BD doesn't count as a dip. It's a format upgrade. the DVDs you got? That's a double dip.

I rented this from the library on dvd the other day and it was so boring. I will probably skip this purchase in Blu.

Re: Alice in Wonderland: 60th Anniversary - 2/1

I'm not fan of these classic Disney flicks either. They look great on Blu-ray, but the stories are rather dull and boring. I'd rather have some of the 90's flicks like Aladdin, Lion Kind and Mulan. I don't own a single classic Disney flick. Seen them all, but no need to keep them. I do have all the Pixar films and Beauty and the Beast though

Re: Alice in Wonderland: 60th Anniversary - 2/1

Classic disney animated films are far from boreing, besides being visually stunning they are well written and acted and feature great music.
These films would not have been loved for generations if they were boreing.

Re: Alice in Wonderland: 60th Anniversary - 2/1

The classic Disney titles are classic for a reason. That being said, I don't feel the need to own every single one of them, and Alice might be a pass for me.
