very cool. And it's budget friendly too!

Seems like quite a bit of empty disk space that could have easily been used for at least SMW.

pfft. I paid less than that for my SNES cartridge which included Super Mario World.

And that's the wrong pic for Mario - that's an 8-bit Mario, these are 16-bit versions of the games.

If it had SMW, I'd buy. Damn shame.

Though it would've been cool if they could've included updated versions of the gameboy Mario games.

I think Super Mario's 25th anniversary deserves a more comprehensive collection. Give me all of the original Super Mario All-Stars contents, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, and Super Mario 64, throw in a video doc on the history of the Super Mario Bros. series and then I'd be excited.

I still have my SNES and the Super Mario All-Stars cartridge so I won't be getting this. This is a great way to introduce the young whippersnappers to 3 of the greatest games of all time.

Seems like quite a bit of empty disk space that could have easily been used for at least SMW, Super Mario 64 & Super Mario Sunshine. These games can't be played with just the Wii remote. Including these games would require the Classic controller to be bundled with the game and that would drive up the price.

I'd pay 50, 60 bucks for a deluxe edition with more games and a classic controller... plus I hate using the Wii remote as a controller.

I'd consider picking this up, even though I already own the All Stars SNES cartridge that includes Super Mario World.

The NES versions are $5 each, aren't they? And if they would have released this as a SNES download, it would only have been $8 total. Not sure how they came up with the $30 MSRP.

Michael Corvin
10-28-10, 03:53 PM
4 games at $5 each: $20
Soundtrack CD: $2.50?
Booklet: $2.50?
Packaging & distribution: $5?

There was pretty much a 0% chance of the SNES All-Stars collection hitting the VC as one game.

pinata242
10-28-10, 03:57 PM
I have them all on the VC already. I believe The Lost Levels was $6, but that's just nitpicking.

I'd be happier with this bundled with the 3DS launch, honestly.

Drexl
10-28-10, 05:17 PM
Wait, is this a straight port (or emulation) of the 16-bit SMAS, or is it an update using the capabilities of the Wii? I'd disappointed if it wasn't an update.

Honestly, I'd consider a special Super Mario Anniversary edition of the Classic Controller to be more added value than the booklet or CD and would gladly pay $20+ more if it was included along with at least the Super NES and N64 games. Even though all the games don't require it, they all would benefit from it over using the Wiimote.

To piggy-back on my last post, here's what I wish this really was:

Super Mario Legacy Collection
- Super Mario Bros.
- Super Mario Bros. 2
- Super Mario Bros. 3
- Lost Levels
- Super Mario World
- Yoshi's Island
- Super Mario 64

** Bundled special Super Mario Anniversary edition of the classic controller (ala the red Anniversary system)
** The option to play each title with its original graphics or with updated Wii-maximized graphics
** Video documentary about the history of the Super Mario Bros. franchise
** Sure, throw in the booklet too

I'd pay $60 for that, especially if it came in an awesome-looking package.

The ones on VC are the original NES versions. The versions on Super Mario All-Stars had improved sprites and backgrounds. It's a great looking game, and I'll happily put it on my kid's xmas list just to play it through a component cable.

It can't be THAT limited, can it? I figured by limited they meant that they'll churn it out, keeping it in print for 6 months to a year. No limited as in "sold out before release". That would be silly.

It's SHC-Gamer over at CAG. It's refreshing to see a company embrace that community.

This game is still available for preorder almost everywhere else. I think the Amazon thing has more to do with the small delay than it being that limited.

I'm hoping to get it at Kmart also. I have just over enough in coupons to pay for it. Heck, the $20 coupon from Epic Mickey is almost enough to pay for it alone.

It's SHC-Gamer over at CAG. It's refreshing to see a company embrace that community.Yeah, those threads are interesting. Half the people complain about how KMart sucks, then people say that if they don't like it, they don't have to shop there. Then some discussion about how people aren't calculating their savings properly because they don't consider the first MSRP game they bought to start the train.

I go to KMart with low expectations and have walked away very happy with my deals. The Epic Mickey "pre-order" resulted in quite a few half price point cards.

I'm planning on picking this up as a Christmas gift for a friend. Couple of questions...

Do these games work with the Wii controller or do you need to purchase a "classic controller"?

Even if you can use the regular Wii controller, how well does it work with the game? I've played Wii games a few times, but I can't see the regular Wii controller being a good fit for this game.

What can I expect to spend on "classic controllers" and are there decent third party versions available that my be less expensive?

Thanks!

We got a book last year for our daughter and the dust jacket was ripped. She was so excited for the book (and would have ripped it anyway) that we didn't press the issue. Amazon sucks, though, with making sure that the shipped items are in good condition.

Back on topic, I missed that this was coming out. I hope I'll be able to pick up a copy, but it's ridiculous on Amazon. I've got 1 and 3 on the VC, and I haven't played those since first getting them and beating them. It might be fun to play 2 again, but the lost levels don't really interest me.

Mine came from Dallas (FedEx overnight), and it was in a huge box. I could put a guitar in the box. The game was sliding around inside, and was badly damaged when I opened it. Also the game had already been opened (the seals on the red paper box).

Amazon is having me return it, and I'm off to buy one from the store.

That's what you get for not looking into what you are purchasing. Nearly everything leading up to the release explained exactly what this set was.

Yeah, the price should have been a big clue. This was a game that would be $8 on the Virtual Console if you could get it that way. If they had done a proper remake, it would sell for $50 and not include any of the extras.

Yeah but that wasn't an official release right? Wasn't it only through a special offer, like a console bundle registration or something? I have it, and I'm pretty sure someone here gave me a code to register to get it through the Nintendo club or something like that.

I have no ideal, but the guy I talked to from Amazon was shocked they used a box that big for a game. I hope your copy arrived in better condition than mine did. I'm not sure if the seals on the game got busted in the warehouse or in shipping, but it looked like someone had already opened the game. Combine that with tons of dents/dings, and the gold part of the box had huge white streaks on it from sliding around.

Anyway thankfully I was able to find a copy at Best Buy in excellent condition, so I sent the Amazon one back this evening.

Based on this experience, and the wait for this to ship I'm not going to preorder anymore limited/collector's sets from Amazon. Not worth the trouble.

Maybe with the success of Mario All Stars they will do the same with Zelda. I know someone already talked about the collectors editions for the Gamecube but it would be nice to get a Zelda collection along these same Mario lines.

Having said that, they better not forget the SNES Zelda game like the 25th forgot Super Mario World. After opening the package and playing Mario 25, I almost get pissed that they failed to include what many people consider the best Mario game ever. Really Nintendo? Was it really that hard to port another game over? It's not like you put much effort in changing ANYTHING about the SNES Collector's game. Assholes.

Again, SMAS never included Super Mario World. They did happen to release a cartridge of both SMAS and SMW later on, but SMW isn't really a part of SMAS.

Second, the Zelda games are already on the Virtual Console. It would seem that most fans that want them on the Wii have already bought those.

david12
12-19-10, 12:04 AM
But they DID release SMAS with SMW later on. Should it matter that it didn't come out originally with the very first SMA version? I mean, if Nintendo felt the need to add SMW later in the SNES lifecycle, then why not just port that version over to the Wii for the 25th. It was good enough and important enough then...but not now? It's as though they believe that the only Mario releases that are worth rereleasing are the original Nintendo versions. That's stupid, and if it's a reason of "if they really want SMW, they can get it on the virtual console" then that's unfair to the Mario fans who are spending $ for a limited edition 25th edition of the biggest Nintendo property.

No matter what you think of IGN, they gave this release a 7.0. Four of the greatest and most iconic games ever, and it gets a seven. If Nintendo put forth a bit more effort with the set, this would have got the much deserved ten. No Super Mario World, a half hearted CD, and a book that looks as though it was 'written' in half an hour. "You, Mario music guy...tell us ONE thing about this particular mario game...but only one because that's all the space that you are worth." It's not as though this property means anything to the Nintendo company.

I'm happy I bought the game, I really am...but no true fan can call this set comprehensive or worth the 25th status.

pinata242
12-19-10, 12:18 AM
I think I paid $21 total for these titles on the VC when they came out 2-3 years ago (back when Nintendo knew about the VC). $29 including SMW. I'm happy with that. I'll probably never play them again either. No need for a disc with the same stuff for a system I never bother to turn on and then worry about extra wear & tear on a mostly idle DVD drive.

Never having owned SMAS myself, I don't find this to be a compelling reason for me to buy the disc (obviously). I get that some do as it's the only real reason to consider it. That being said, I do find the thought to be counter-intuitive to the "purist" mindset when it comes to celebrating the Silver Anniversary.

These discs are meant more for the Wii owners that don't know about VC or have their systems online or are savvy enough to purchase them. It's far easier for Nintendo to slap the original SMAS rom onto a disc and let the VC take over. Doesn't explain why they neglected the SMAS+SMW version, really.

I played through SMB this morning. First time I've finished that game in ages. I don't recall ever playing the All-Stars version on the SNES. I've had the original from the VC on the hard drive forever but only played it a few times. Despite the disc, I think it will be much easier to go back to with the prettier graphics and improved soundtrack than the VC version. I also think Mario controls a lot better. He didn't seem as stiff as the original version.

After playing through though, man it would have been cool to have this whole package redone in the NSMB graphics. Also, I don't think SMB2 was touched so technically you are getting 3 "remastered" games, not 4.

Same here. Mine sold within an hour of listing it. I get a free copy of Dragon Quest VI for the DS! :)

I wonder if the re-release will just be the game, and no booklet and CD soundtrack.

The link to the toys r us looks like it's the four games only, and not the big fancy box. Fine by me.

Well it did - it's no longer listed there.

Wow; here I was thinking I could save a pre-order and just pick it up on street date.

I wonder how quickly they'd be selling if Nintendo had MSRPed them at 49.99 to begin with...

Saw some of these on the shelf at BB last night. Just an FYI for anyone still looking for the game.

Yeah, I picked one up at Best Buy last night. I'm gonna keep it sealed for a while and see if there's still any demand for it. If not, I'll just keep it. Win/win!
