Dutch Blu-ray of "Agora" region-free

Thought this might be of interest to some people reading here. While the French and Spanish versions of this film are locked to Region B only, the Dutch one is region-free. Here's a Dutch review of the disc, translated to English by BabelfishL

Dutch review

Here is an image of the disc, taken from another site, clearly showing A, B and C on the disc itself.

Yes! Really want to see this film in HD.

it's still a mystery as to why the US and the UK versions were released on DVD only...

Re: Dutch Blu-ray of "Agora" region-free

Very unfortunate that Lionsgate didn't show this title some Blu-Ray love. I'm region free so I don't care whether the disc is locked or not, I just want the best possible release, so I'll wait to see comparisons between the Dutch and French versions before I decide what to buy.

I think it had something to do with the fact that it was released into 17 theaters and grossed $619,423 in the U.S. and wasn't released in the UK at all. $30 million in Spain though!

Re: Dutch Blu-ray of "Agora" region-free

Looks like the Dutch version is the cheapest, I saw it selling for 15 Euros at one site (sorry can't recall which) whereas the French and German ones are 20 Euros on Amazon's sites.

My wife has friends in Holland so when they visit her later this year I can ask them to pick me up a copy ;-)

Plenty of films that get limited-to-no theatrical release in the States still get BD releases here.

I never even heard about this film. Looking at the picture of the Blu-ray case, I see it's from the Director of 'The Others', which was a big hit here. It also was a selection of Cannes film festival and yet it's not getting a Blu-ray release in the US? How odd.

I may wait to find a good price on this and try to import it.

Yeah, there have been plenty of movies which are a lot more obscure, with no starts, lesser directors, and even less or no theatrical distribution that have gotten solid blu-ray releases. I see no reason this doesn't have one in America. Maybe Canada soon?

Best I've been able to find so far that ships to the US is through Proxis, whom I know nothing about. Seems reputable, though.

http://www.proxis.nl/BEEN/Product/Fi...1__detail.aspx

17€ + 5€ shipping to US = 22€ or ~$30.

It's possible that the Dutch blu-ray may not have English subs.

I'll have to disagree with this, I don't think it was a great film per se, but I really did like it. For me, that would go to Abre Los Ojos and even The Sea Inside. This is definitely worth watching at least once though. I can wait for the eventual BD release for this. No need to go Dutch on this IMO.

I highly doubt this is EVER going to get a BD release in the US. That Lionsgate didn't do it day-and-date with the DVD is very telling. Don't get your hopes up.

OK, no subtitles, but it's in English right? The link in the OP says that too - English 5.1 DTS-HD MA.

It's an English language film, but I don't recall whether there are any parts that are in a different language and require English subs.

The commentary, and about half of the extras are in Spanish.
