Looks like Social Distortion have finally got a release set for their follow up to 2004's Sex, Love, and Rock 'n' Roll. They are one of my favorite bands so I'm really looking forward to hearing some new material from them.

Going to see Band of Horses on Friday and Roger Waters on Sunday. To be honest, if I had known about the Social Distortion date beforehand, I would have got those tickets instead of Horses. I like them a lot, but I think Social Distortion would be harder to catch.

I used to be a huge Social Distortion fan in high school, but I have to say they get sillier and more cliche as the years go by. Weirdly the only record that doesn't feel incredibly one dimensional to me is "White Light, White Heat, White Trash".

I remember I started to lose interested in them around the third time I saw them and realized Ness had scripted between song banter that was exactly the same every show. All the silly "flaming dice" cliches just keep me from being able to enjoy them. "Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes" is also a pretty weak album title (although album titles have never been their strong point)

Meh their album titles have never been that good if you ask me. But the music is usually good so who really cares?

It was 8 years between White Light, White Heat, White Trash and Sex, Drugs, and Rock 'n' Roll. The only thing they released in between was the live album Live at the Roxy. I don't really care how long it takes to release as long as the music is good which I'm sure it will be.

Really good time last night at the concert. Wasn't sure what to expect - I'm just a casual fan - but they put on a really tight show.

it takes 6 years because they tour the new cd, and then tour it again, then tour it again, and then again etc. they passed thru at least 4 times for the same cd. ness probably doesnt make money on the cd sales so he milks the tours as much as he can...im not saying theres anything wrong with that as i enjoy seeing them as often as i can, but when you hit the same city 2 or 3 times, it would be nicer if they had something new to promote, even an itunes ep or something.

Not sure if anyone besides me got this yet (just got my download code but my vinyl hasn't arrived yet) but this album is pretty kick ass if you ask me. I've been anticipating it for a long time now and they definitely didn't let me down with this album. Haven't really determined a favorite track yet but I do like the first single Machine Gun Blues.

Also of note the vinyl version appears to have two extra tracks the CD version doesn't: Take Care of Yourself and I Won't Run No More and iTunes has them as well as an exclusive of their own: Down Here (With The Rest of Us) which is available for purchase separately.

All Music gave it 3 and a half stars out of 5 but the review seems more positive so not really sure why it got a lower star rating. The only other review I saw for it was a BBC one who also seemed to like it.

Full album streaming here. I've never been a big Social D fan, and this didn't change my mind. I gave it a shot though.

Take Care of Yourself and I Won't Run No More are also on the Spotify version of the album, so I assume they're also on the UK CD. Down Here (With The Rest of Us) is a track from their White Light, White Heat, White Trash album. Not sure why it's being tacked onto the new album in the iTunes store. Maybe it's a live or acoustic version?

I was caught off guard yesterday when a friend on FB started a discussion on how much he hates Social Distortion. A whole slew of people joined in. I never considered this band something to really dislike when the state of popular rock is a little sucky (talking about commercial acts). I mean, this is just a pretty decent meat and potatoes band with a history worth appreciating. I only saw them in '90/'93 and haven't listened to any of their new material since the 90's, but I can't believe they've changed that much. Seems maybe they are more popular today, though, than maybe ever before (?).

I think just due to being still active they have become a bit like Phish for the flaming dice and dickies crowd.

Once you see the facade of it, the cliche silly made up stories about spending nights in jail etc, it becomes a little hard to enjoy as an adult. I do still enjoy the early stuff for the so-cal punk element of it, and I still think that "white light, white trash, white heat" (despite a similarly awful title) is their best and most "real" record.
