FUNi Blog (http://blog.funimation.com/2010/10/two-new-anime-packaging-changes/)
Part I – Bringing Back Starter Set Packaging and Premium Item
In question 1, we had two choices, a Part 1 collector version or stick with current packaging. The collector version option received 69% of the vote.
Part 1 (Episodes 1-13) comprises of a collectible rigid hard box containing 2 slim DVD cases with reversible covers and a premium item. The collector box will have room to include the 2 slim DVD cases in Part 2. (all 4 slims will fit in to the collector box) The concept is very much similar to the Volume 1 Starter Boxes released several years ago. The SRP for this would be $5 more or $64.98 – retailers will likely price this at $43 to $52 – (cause who pays full retail?)
This will be a First Printing Limited Edition. After we have sold through all the allocated units of the first printing with the rigid box and premium– that’s it. We will then start to offer Part 1 for $59.98 SPR with a cardstock box and 2 slim DVDs- our current packaging. (retailers will likely price this at $40 to $48.)
The release packaging and pricing of the Part 2 of a series will remain the same. $59.98 SRP in a cardstock box with 2 slim DVDs (again – who pays full retail?)
So for less than a $5 increase, you get a rigid collectible box and a premium item. You spend that much on a fancy coffee alone. In fact, the increase in price does not cover our costs for the premium and the rigid box, but we felt we did not want to pass that entire cost to you.
This will be the case for all of our new properties – 26/24 and 12/13 episode series starting in 2011. If a show was only 13 episodes, the series will have a rigid box and a premium item.
In question 7 of the survey, we asked your preference of premium items. Based on that feedback, we are providing what you would like as premium items.
We are still in the process of finalizing the box art and the premium items so I can’t show you all the exact items yet. We will display all items in the coming weeks. All of these titles will have a collectible rigid box plus the following:
Phantom – Requiem for the Phantom – The premium item will be a bullet chain necklace.
Black Butler – We are still working on the packaging – we’ll get back to you on this one.
Sacred Blacksmith – The premium item will be an 32 page art booklet with a centerfold.
Part II – Anime Classics – The Greatest Hits Collection
We are creating a new line look called Anime Classics.
There are so many great older titles that people need to have in their collection – many are the best example of a certain anime genre. Anime Classics is our new line for these shows. It’s a greatest hits collection of anime titles – each under $50 dollars. The SRP will be $49.98 but who pays full retail? It will be less than that at your favorite store.
This line is not a catch-all for all box sets. Not every title will be selected for Anime Classics. A lot of this is based on past sales performance of the title and fandom reaction throughout the years. Basically, the last box set release for every show will either be an Anime Classic or S.A.V.E.
We are still looking at packing options that take into consideration that the classics are to 1. Be watched again and again and 2. They need to look good in a bookcase without taking up too much space. We’ll post news about the packaging when it’s finalized.

Nothing is known at the moment. My guess is that it would be released together the other Ghibli re-releases (like earlier this year) and/or maybe Nausicaä BD. Regardless it's extremely unlikely that a BD will be released. It's as simple as this: if Japan doesn't get one, we won't either.

Now I'm waiting for news on when the latest Pokemon movie will show in the U.S. It may be called PHANTOM CHAMPION Z, according to one website. A Facebook page I found yesterday claimed it would air on Cartoon Network on November 12, in which case I blew it, but that appears not to have happened. I could find no record of any showing of it.
Anyone hear of anything?

I have a feeling the Vocal Collections will eventually consist of more sub-only releases. If I am right it would put a lot of presure on other companies that release sub-only dvds to start dubbing more.
Other Media Blasters titles that have sub-only, I can see the first 3 getting a dub. Girl's High is on Hulu (http://www.hulu.com/girls-high), Crunchyroll (http://www.crunchyroll.com/girlshigh), Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/show/girlhigh?s=1)
Same with Ramen Fighter Miki Hulu (http://www.hulu.com/ramen-fighter-miki), Crunchyroll (http://www.crunchyroll.com/ramen-fighter-miki), Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/show/ramenfightermiki?pl=DEC26C25A13940F2)
Girl's High, Ramen Fighter Miki, Princess Princess, Otoboku, Simoun, Sukisho, Tekkaman, Dairugger - Armored Fleet, Beast King GoLion, Dojin Work, Gakuen Heaven, Nighthead Genesis, Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei, Sentimental Journey, Seraphim Call, Step Up Love Story, Angel's Feather, Aoi and Mutsuki, Blame, Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan, Cleopatra, I Shall Never Return, Kirameki Project, Madonna, & Magical Witch Punie-Chan

First of all, the subbed releases have to perform well enough for them to consider this. Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan (of which shouldn't be on your list to be dubbed), Kashimashi, Loveless, and Strawberry Panic all have performed better than anticipated (noted by John Sirabella in various occasions). That's why this news wasn't that surprising to me. Still I won't count on this happening all the time.
Girl's High, Ramen Fighter Miki, Otoboku, Simoun, Dojin Work, and Nighthead Genesis are some of the more recent ones I have seen that I wouldn't mind dubbing. Those older works probably don't stand much chance. Sukisho would likely be a no as it performed under expectations (according to JS).

I didn't say they all should be dubbed, I didn't even see any of them. I was just pointing out Media Blasters sub-only animes. The only ones I would buy are Girl's High, Ramen Fighter, & Otoboku if they get dubbed becouse they look like they would be good. I am going to buy Kashimashi dubbed I want to see it.

I am very picky what animes I buy sub-only like Clannad, To Love Ru, Indian Summer, Samurai Harem, and my next one I will buy is Koihime Musou. I might buy 11eyes also but I have so many dubbed animes I am buying next year I might not.

I got this from elsewhere...in regards to the 13th movie.
Source: Pokemon.com (http://www.pokemon.com/us/movies/movie-pokemonzoroark-master-of-illusions-february-2011/)
Pokémon.com has revealed the first information on the English dub of the thirteenth Pokémon movie, to be titled Zoroark: Master of Illusions, which will premiere Feb. 5 on Cartoon Network. The movie takes place in anime-exclusive location Crown City. In the movie, Ash, Brock, and Dawn head to Crown City to watch the Pokémon Baccer World Cup, though this gets interrupted by a mother Zoroark, its offspring Zorua, Celebi and the shiny legendary beasts.

Awesome, thanks for the heads-up, WTK. Coincidentally, I was in my local Japanese video shop last night and I bought the Japanese-only DVD of the 13th Pokemon movie. Checked it out to scan a few scenes from it and it looks great.

Do we have any idea how the 2011 re-release of Samurai Champloo will differ from the prior Blu-ray release? I searched around a little and couldn't find anything. Was thinking about picking the set up on Blu-ray and depending if the re-release will be better or worse or the same, I may wait or pick up the current edition before it goes OOP.

Probably just less Special Features since it is creaper. The Classic Line
is kinda the same as the S.A.V.E. line. Funimation said before animes would eather go S.A.V.E. or Classic about a year after the normal boxset comes out.

No solid information has been revealed other than the disc count. It's supposedly the same as the Geneon releases. And under the new product SKUs, it appears that these re-releases are fully under FUNimation now (and not distributing for Geneon USA). I would expect the the on-disc contents to be the same for both formats.

We’ve been getting lots of emails about the Fist of the North Star TV series. Yes we will finish the series all the way until episode 152. We hope to release the 3rd box in July. And then the 4th box in September or October. These will be English subbed.
Also the Galaxy Express 999 movies should both come out in June. When the dates are official we will post them here. They will both have the English subbed version and the English dubbed versions.
The next titles released will be:
4/19/11
Aquarian Age Juvenile Orion live action movie (English subbed)
Princess Blade live action (will be 16:9 for the first time in the US, English sub and dub)
5/17/11
Project A-ko (remastered, english subbed and dubbed)
Dead or Alive (Takashi Miike’s awesome live action movie! English subbed)
You already posted that one.
Huh? Under the header for the post, it's about the "More info" on the Kanokon boxset. The specs were unknown before, especially for the added animated shorts and OVA series. It's brand new information.

The reviews are bad because instead of just doing a straight upscale, they used what's called "Q-tec upscaling technology" on it. What that actually is, is they basically sharpen the hell out of it and apply DNR which causes detail to be blurred out and the edges of everything looks warped as the screenshot Chiyo_chichi linked to clearly shows. That crap looks so awful.

Posted on: Monday, February 14, 2011
Right Stuf, Inc. and Nozomi Entertainment announced the grand opening of antique.rightstuf.com (http://antique.rightstuf.com/)– the official site for the ANTIQUE BAKERY anime series, which is scheduled to make its North American DVD debut in April 2011 (http://www.rightstuf.com/i/rsdvd1142).
At the site, visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the culinary world that serves as a backdrop for Antique Bakery, via a series of special features that will include articles written by popular food bloggers, chefs and specialists, as well as interviews with business owners and cook book authors, recipes and more.
The first installment of this series is an interview with Nicole Bermensolo, the proprietor of Kyotofu, Japanese dessert bar and bakery based in New York City. In it, she discusses how she got interested in Japanese cooking and desserts, Kyotofu’s East-meets-West philosophy, and how the eatery is actively working to bring favorite dishes to fans worldwide through its online store and relationships with Dean & Deluca and All Nippon Airways (ANA). Bermensolo also shares Kyotofu’s recipe for mini green tea chocolate cakes.

Fear of reverse importation to the max (on the Japan side). This one isn't happening anytime if at all. UK for the very least had listings, U.S. never even got that far.

Good as those movies were, I had one gripe with them: they were long movies. And that's kind of unusual for anime in Japan, since anime "movies" shown in theaters in Japan tend to be around 65-70 minutes long and run as part of a double-bill show.

Funimation Delays Dragon Ball Z Kai Vol #5 DVD & BD
Funimation has pushed back the date for the 5th volume of the Dragon Ball Z Kai DVD and BD - from May 3rd to June 17th. I think this probably has something to do with the little Toei 'music' copyright violation thing that cropped up recently.

Funimation Pushes Rosario Yet Again - Now to December
Funi just sent over a note letting us know that they have pushed Rosario - again - now to December. All things considered, I'm really not sure what the point of even giving it a date at all. Perhaps they should just list it as TBD until they workout whatever the issue is that's holding it up.
Rosario+Vampire Complete Collection DVD Boxed Set (Eps #1-13) - Sep 27 to Dec 20
Rosario+Vampire Capu2 (Season 2) Complete DVD Boxed Set (Eps #14-26) - Sep 27 to Dec 20
I was told a while back that the Rosario delays were unique and were being caused by a materials issue, which would makes sense if it was delayed a couple three month, but this is something else. I wonder if they are having an issue with a license approval or some other legal requirement? These delays feel contractual in nature...
TRSI was smart to leave it as a TBD status.
And the time line looks like this now: 12/20/11 (Was 9/27/11, 8/30/11, 7/19/11, 5/17/11 and 3/29/11)

What the? Studio: Aniplex of America?
What's to be surprised about?
I'm going to copy & paste this response from AoD (http://www.mania.com/aodvb/showpost.php?p=1922859&postcount=17).
a) FUNimation never pursued the Blu-ray rights, due to lack of interest or initiative.
b) FUNimation investigated the Blu-ray rights, but passed as a result of cost or other licensing issues.
c) FUNimation was unable to acquire the Blu-ray rights, due to Aniplex Japan not making them available (though not necessarily because they knew they were going to take care of it themselves and were being stingy; the Japanese have withheld licensing rights to all sorts of things for all sorts of reasons).
The series was acquired by FUNimation during the latter days of single releases. The series was also rushed out early so it can be released. Rights for additional on-disc extras weren't fully acquired until the first complete collection was released. Blu-ray rights are always considered separate from DVD rights (same thing can be said for streaming ones as well) unless acquired all together at once.

I would agree with an index if all new animes got trailers uploaded to youtube and also an index kinda defeates the purpose of posting them, would you check out a trailer for an anime you never heard of lets say K-On or would you watch it looking at

I do remember the new solicitation toward the end of the sale. Sometimes that can't be helped. And at times studios may wait until the sale is over too. I can't remember if The Scared Blacksmith was part of it. But I believe that was the sale that was extended by a couple days.

The last Rightstuf Funi sale was the one that was extended by a couple of days and it didn't have anything new at the end or after the sale, I was checking. I am going to make it a habit to check right before the funi sales end to see if anything new got added from now on. When I got The Scared Blacksmith it was the sale before that one and it ended that night. I hope it wasn't a goof that "The Scared Blacksmith" was added before the sale ended, I was commenting about it on the Funi Blog.

You're correct about the last sale. The one you were referring to was indeed the one before that: link (http://www.rightstuf.com/rssite/main/news/individual/?ForumThreadName=FT0000001832&Offset=0&ReturnTo=Archive), ending on 11:59 p.m. CDT on October 14, 2010. The January solicitation was revealed late on 10/14/10 @ around late afternoon/early evening (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/10431050-post8.html) as well. Something like this typically don't happen. They very could have withhold the listings until the next day, but they didn't. I know I took advantage to that myself.

That is a wonderful press release announcement! Mainly because it's nice to know the Rurouni Kenshin OVA's are going to be released on Blu-ray. The pricing is still too high for my tastes. I may have to try and get a copy of Trust & Betrayal though.

The Kenshin BD LE releases are only go higher in price (sometime after the actual street date). These are essentially direct Japan imports (with separate English translated booklet).

Unfortunately, it looks to me like this trend will continue. I'm speculating that since most people would prefer to illegally download their anime than to buy it, pricing anime to appeal to "most people" has proven not to work. The strategy being tried now seems to be to market to the kinds of people who will buy, and to add value that they wouldn't get in an illegal download. That means fancier packages, higher prices, and smaller print runs. It's also clearly working, since the limited edition packages always sell out quickly.
I'm currently terrified that Puella Madoka Magica will be released like this.

Keep in mind, the Kenshin LE BD releases are direct Japan imports. The only release before this was The Garden of Sinners Blu-ray-Box of which sold out before/right around the street date. The biggest cost for the releases should be the translated booklets. Whatever release(s) doesn't sell, they could still sell them in Japan. These imported releases are not intended for all consumers. The main intent are for those who were interested in importing directly from Japan.
I'm currently terrified that Puella Madoka Magica will be released like this.
It's not possible to do a simultaneous import release like the Kenshin releases (or The Garden of Sinners). It remains to be seen how they want to handle this series (BD, dub, pricing).

Dragon Ball Z Sees November Release on High-Definition Blu-ray Disc™ Format
Flower Mound, TX (July 21, 2011) – FUNimation® Entertainment is announcing that it is bringing the first installment of the anime phenomenon Dragon Ball Z (http://www.dragonballz.com/) to Blu-ray disc for the first time this fall.
Among the most prized in the FUNimation catalog, the studio has used the newest technology available to remaster in high-definition and digitally restore the 291 episode series.
FUNimation worked with Dallas-based AND TRANSFER for the digital film transfer. FUNimation previously worked with the post-production house to remaster the series for the season set releases on DVD. The transfer was performed by nationally-recognized colorist Steve Franko and supervised by FUNimation, which then finished the rest of the restoration process.
Today’s state-of-the-art systems offer tools that allow restoration teams to make a wide range of repairs and focus on more difficult tasks which, in the end, deliver a clean product that faithfully presents the original version and measures up to the high-quality standards of HDTV and Blu-ray.
Once again, the Dragon Ball Z (http://www.dragonballz.com/) series was digitally transferred from the original Japanese 16mm film frame by frame at 1080p. Developments in restoration software gives mastering artists more to work with when they apply tools to even out film grain and remove fading, film cuts and other visual anomalies. As a result, the viewer will see brighter, clearer colors, less variance in quality between scenes, and a sharper image.
“Working with a very old and fragile source film presented a number of challenges for the restoration process,” said Gen Fukunaga, CEO and president at FUNimation Entertainment. “Our purpose was to restore the series as accurately as possible, to what it must have been like to see it when it was originally mastered, and preserve the charm of the animation. After all, it is of a particular time and place.”
After debuting in 1989, Dragon Ball Z (http://www.dragonballz.com/)has become an iconic anime series. The franchise has sold more than 25 million DVD and Blu-ray discs in its lifetime, becoming the best-selling anime series of all time.
Dragon Ball Z is the explosive sequel to Dragon Ball. The series follows the adventures of Goku and his son Gohan as they team up with their friends to battle evil forces throughout the universe to protect their beloved planet Earth. The first season covers the Vegeta Saga and chronicles the introduction of one of Dragon Ball Z’s main characters, Vegeta.
This restored edition also features the original U.S. voice actors as well as the original FUNimation soundtrack – all in lossless Dolby® TrueHD.
Dragon Ball Z (http://www.dragonballz.com/) Level 1.1 includes the first 17 episodes on two discs with over 400 minutes of action and among the extras included on this release is a feature that looks at the restoration and remastering processes.
Dragon Ball Z (http://www.dragonballz.com/)Level 1.1 will be available at major retailers nationwide on November 8, 2011.

IN STORES OCTOBER 18
SAN DIEGO, CA, July 21, 2011 - Long before the current live-action Transformers franchise took over the box office and introduced giant alien robots to a new generation, there was a sweeping animated sci-fi epic that delivered "mecha" to the masses: Robotech. Arriving on U.S. airwaves in the mid-80s via syndication, the legendary space opera - one of the very first anime imports -- helped to usher in the multi-billion dollar anime industry and now, through the cult classic curators at A+E Networks Home Entertainment, the influential series will be reborn on DVD. Working in close conjunction with original Robotech producer Harmony Gold, the franchise will be available in a handsomely-designed collector's set featuring all 85 re-mastered episodes of the engaging and dramatic anime classic. Available for $99.95 SRP, the specially-priced 17-disc set ROBOTECH: THE COMPLETE ORIGINAL SERIES will also feature four exclusive bonus discs with more than 10 hours of bonus content - much of which is new to DVD. The deal was brokered by Content Media Corporation, the worldwide distributor of the series.
A sweeping science-fiction anime epic, ROBOTECH was set at the turn of the millennium, when a mysterious spacecraft crash-landed on a South Pacific island. The secrets of alien knowledge aboard this vessel were unlocked, leading to the development of "Robotechnology" and the creation of a vast arsenal of robotic "mecha" to defend the Earth against the alien threats that would eventually strike, attempting to lay claim to the mysterious power source known as "protoculture." Told through the eyes of characters caught in a successive series of three extraterrestrial invasions, the saga was the first anime series that many fans had seen, and is often credited with the explosion of anime fandom that continues to grow in the U.S. today.
The cornerstone of a blockbuster franchise that has spawned dozens of movies, books, toys, video games and comic books, ROBOTECH was originally licensed from Japan's Tatsunoko Studios, adapted from three different series and re-edited and re-dubbed into English. Because ROBOTECH hailed from three completely different anime series, Harmony Gold joined them into a cohesive narrative by splitting them into three distinct chapters, each representing a different generation of the saga: THE MACROSS SAGA (36 episodes), THE ROBOTECH MASTERS (24 episodes) and THE NEW GENERATION (25 episodes). These are also informally referred to as "The First Robotech War," "The Second Robotech War" and "The Third Robotech War" respectively.
Aside from featuring all 85 half-hour episodes of the original series (re-mastered from original elements for this release), ROBOTECH: THE COMPLETE ORIGINAL SERIES also includes over ten hours of bonus programming:
The Making of Robotech Documentary - NEW to DVD
Robotech Music Videos - NEW to DVD
Robotech Overview - NEW to DVD
Alternate versions of select Robotech episodes - NEW to DVD
Robotech: The Movie supplementals (including several sequences NEW to DVD)
Macross Original Pilot - 70 minute extended version - NEW to DVD
Promotional reel of Robotech Launch in China - NEW to DVD
Over an hour of deleted scenes
Robotech: The Sentinels (with optional audio commentary)
Robotech: The Sentinels promotional video
Macross Original Pilot - Parts 1, 2 and 3
Mospeada Original Pilot - Part 1
Original opening and closing animations
Galaxy of the Stars - Harmony Gold promotional reel
Toy Commercial and Videogame presentation reels
International clips for all three Robotech Wars
A vast stills appendix containing character bios, model sheets, pre-production art, comic book covers, and merchandise galleries
And much, much more!
Voted #34 on the "Top 100 Animated Series of All Time" by IGN.com, ROBOTECH will also be released day-and-date in several additional configurations. THE FIRST ROBOTECH WAR (THE MACROSS SAGA; 5 discs), THE SECOND ROBOTECH WAR (THE ROBOTECH MASTERS; 4 discs) and THE THIRD ROBOTECH WAR (THE NEW GENERATION; 4 discs) will also be available for fans both new and old.

I see you did a post in the anime section, but I meant the main DVD section. I know we have an anime section for a reason, but like I said this has a more mainstream appeal.
I'll go ahead and do it, just didn't want to step on any toes.
