Good call to have individual threads for each episode of this show.

I enjoyed the pilot, but really hope the reports are true that it's the weakest of the first batch.

Ep. started slow, but really picked up in the second half. I like how this really illustrated that gangsters are pretty much despicable and cannot be counted on to help anyone but themselves.

Only one gripe: how in the world is Gretchen Mol old enough to be Jimmy Darmode's mom? I think she's only 8 years older than the actor, and it's obvious.

^ Yeah, I initially thought she was his mistress during that scene.

Anyway, a great follow-up to last week's premiere. Nucky is sure going to have his hands full with both Rothstein and Van Alden.

The ending was a tad confusing, but i assume the very bloody guy was someone thought to have been whacked?

I thought Mol was playing his mistress as well.

The guy who's playing Capone sounds like he's trying to imitate Tony Soprano.

I've liked the actual gangster scenes, I hope the scenes with Kelly MacDonald's character has a payoff down the road.

Of course they had to make Van Alden a creep

He was one of the guys from the heist. In an earlier scene, Nucky says something to Jimmy about killing three guys and Jimmy says "No, it was four," and Nucky says "No, it was three." Turns out, Nucky was right!

Am I remembering correctly -- did Mrs. Schroeder say last week that she wasn't an immigrant? I thought Nucky said something like "Is that the old country I hear in your voice?" and she said something like "No, my husband says I sound like an immigrant but I'm not." Because this week, she said she was from Ireland. Hmmmmm ....

I don't like the guy playing Capone is the same guy who played Baby Face Nelson in Public Enemies.

No she said that her husband didn't like her accent because it made her sound like an immigrant. Nucky replied something like "After all, aren't we all immigrants here?"

Really like this show. The 2nd episode was much better because you know the characters now, and you kinda see where everything is going with the story.

I will say I am a huge Buschemi fan, but I still don't know if he can carry a series like this being the lead. But we'll see what happens.

Found this one to be a bit of a bore, but it did seem less scattershot than the premiere and offered glimpses of things to come. Won't be rewatching it anytime soon, though.

Ah. I guess I inferred something from "It makes me sound like an immigrant" that wasn't intended.

Re: Boardwalk Empire -- "The Ivory Tower" -- 09/26/10

Ok - maybe we can figure this out.

Capone and Jimmy steal $30,00-60,000 worth of whiskey. If I remember correctly Capone drives off with a truck load and so does Jimmy.

So - unless Jimmy is the worst gangster EVER!! he should have gotten at least $15K at minimum for his 1/2 of the booze...

I loved watching how hard Jimmy works to scrape up $3000, then gives it to Nucky who blows it on one spin of the roulette wheel. Harsh.

Agree. I like how they're making it clear that Nucky is not a nice guy and has no qualms about treating people like crap. I think the reason he did that was to show Jimmy one of the aspects of being a gangster: you sometimes have to pay people, even if they don't need the money. It's just a rule, and if you don't like it, go f#$k yourself.

Re: Boardwalk Empire -- "The Ivory Tower" -- 09/26/10

I was hoping the intro might be different this week since sometimes pilots have different intros than the actual series.

Thinking back through all the HBO series I've watched...Oz, Sopranos, The Wire, True Blood, Treme, Deadwood, Carnivale, Rome, SFU, etc., they all had really great music and really interesting visuals. I watched them every time.

This one is just like - meh. The music doesn't fit at all. And I don't mean it needed to be "period" music. I just think it's flat and boring.

As for the show, I fear it is veering in the same direction. I don't need or want it to be all action, but the drama needs to be more compelling. The only scene I really liked was the billiard room scene which didn't even have the series mains in it.

That definitely confused the hell out of me. First I thought mistress. Then sister. Had no idea she was his mother. I guess I missed that somewhere.

That was a great little scene.

at the Commodore and his women voting comment.

Cavemen invented the blow job. Prim and proper Americans and Brits in the late 19th/early 20th century just pretended the French did.

I love the sets, but so far the show hasn't really "gripped" me. I'll keep watching for the eye candy - I am sure that I'll be hooked on the story soon enough, given HBO's track record.

Re: Boardwalk Empire -- "The Ivory Tower" -- 09/26/10

OK episode.

Very weird Jimmy's mother straddling her son. I know they were trying to fool us into thinking they were lovers, but that was creepy. Gretchen Mol was miscast due to her age. Michael Pitt is 30 years old (and looks it) but is playing 23 and Mol is 38 and looks it in the show. She could've had a kid at 16 or 17, but mother and son really look very close to the same age.
