DVD Talk review of 'Community: The Complete First Season'
I read Jason Bailey's DVD review of Community: The Complete First Season at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=44666 and...
Stop trying to mine gold from a lump of turd. This show royally sucks. It tries way too desperately to be topical, kitchy and irreverent. It wants us to believe that it's grounded in reality, while at the same time it operates in absolute absurdity. Pick one. 30 Rock is absurd with elements of reality. Modern Family is reality with elements of absurd. It's like Community has an identity crisis. And the lazy writers want it both ways so they can deflect any criticism of someone "misinterpreting" or "mis-characterizing" their show. And I understand the writers not wanting to do any research, but, for Christ's sake - comedy, or not - if you're going to make your lead character a former practicing attorney, at least make him/it semi-believable. Joel Mchale's Jeff Winger is as much an attorney as Sarah Palin is smart. It's a load of bull that they flippantly brush this HUGE CHARACTER FLAW off and get a free pass.
I'm not asking for Law & Order: Community, but they're really asking for the criticism when they specifically attempt (quite poorly) to highlight Winger's skills in the Debate episode, or the Swimming pool scene where he 'defends' Britta. Again, here I'm sure they'll say "Take it easy, it's just a comedy!" But all that is is an excuse for poor writing. And the Jeff/Annie thing was not only predictable, but completely forced. Par for the course, I guess.
