Blind Musical Taste Test #11 - Heavy Metal

This time we've got a 3-fer, with 3 songs from the same band. (I had a hard time deciding which tracks to include...)

Anyway, once again if you know who this is (and many of you may know) please don't post the info.

I only heard the first clip but I recognized it as

Spoiler:
Armored Saint - I think that track is from Symbol of Salvation. Pretty good metal record - the only one of theirs I know.

Anyone??

3 songs to weigh in on, someone's got to have something to say about at least one of them...

I had a friend who swore by this band in school, but I've never heard two of these songs. I was never exactly set on fire by them. I like the drumming, like the approach to song structure, the guitar solos get a little too squibbly for me. Not a fan of the vocals, but I do like when they devolve to a scream. Big fan of a good scream.

I'm not a heavy metal fan. If I'm gonna listen to it I'd MUCH rather hear something like this:

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/oZjEk2QEb8c?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/oZjEk2QEb8c?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

I didn't think my comments in the other threads were enough to get me on ignore but I guess so.

To comment further, I think their album

Spoiler:
Symbol of Salvation

was very well received when it came out. They strike me as one of those bands that are well respected by and every bit as good as their bigger metal peers (like Metallica), and yet never quite reach the same fame.

To elaborate a little more on my comment, you're obviously a fan of hard rock/heavy metal. That's great. I on the other hand don't usually trend in that direction. And when I do I stick with the progressive or gothic side - Dream Theater, Within Temptation, Nightwish- but haven't ventured much further than those few bands.

I've listened to all of the songs in your first 10 blind taste tests, and the music has been more or less listenable but generally not what I'm into. I do recall finding the vocals of the 8th(?) track kind of interesting, but other than that nothing's really stood out for me. Even the jazz, funk & oldies tracks you picked have been pretty unremarkable, IMO.

This 11th pick has been the only one where I haven't listened to the songs the whole way through. To my ignorant ears, it sounds like every basic metal band I've ever heard- it could be Metallica for all I know.

I do like to see that you're such a huge fan of the music you like. If I had the time and inclination, I'd love to go through my collection and find obscure tracks that I thought needed more exposure and post them, too. I've enjoyed these threads, and will continue to listen and try to give your songs a fair shake if you do more. I keep hoping I'll find one I really like. Just know that our tastes don't have much overlap.

Re: Blind Musical Taste Test #11 - Heavy Metal

Here's why I chose the songs I chose from this band...

#1 - This song is really interesting rhythmically. They've got that tribal drum thing going at the beginning and the entire song has a bit of that incorporated in both the drum beat and the guitar riffs. This one is atypical of Metal in that way. (And for my money the riffs and vocal melodies are very strong.)

#2 - This one is very reminiscent of Alice Cooper's From the Inside album (which was an interesting - and quite good - album in and of itself), without being a blatant ripoff of any one of the songs.

#3 - This one is just a well written Metal song. Really good riffs, good vocal melodies, and a strong chorus. There are also some nice tempo changes involved. The production on the last two songs is really, really good as well (huge, but clear and distinct guitar tone, good bass tone, good drum sounds).

I could have named that band in one note. Easily, one of my all time favorites. Song #3 reminds me that I've been meaning to give that disc a spin again.
