The name didn't ring a bell and I don't think I've seen any of the movies they mentioned.

Nevertheless, may he rest in peace.

He was the French Hitchcock, and incredibly prolific. Also, one of the critical giants of Cahiers du cinema before becoming a filmmaker.

Re: Claude Chabrol 1930 - 2010

damn, i had been really wanting to purchase his dvd collection (not the Kino set) just to check out some of his work (i intend on doing the same with Eric Rohmer and Jacques Rivette and other lesser iconic French New Wavers). sad news.

what are some good films to start with?

I'd just start with the titles in his set... basically starting with Les Biches, Le Boucher and La Femme Infidele.

Coincidentally I watched the trailer to his latest film the other day which is opening in October in the US. It's his 50th film.

Quite incredible to have directed 50 films in only 52 years.

I really like Les Biches and Le Boucher is an essential film. RIP Claude. You'll be missed. I also like Le Ceremonie from 1995 starring Isabelle Huppert.

Assuming you're region-free, there are a couple of inexpensive box sets available from Amazon UK.

RIP. I was amazed each year when he released yet another movie.

I've only seen "Le Boucher", but it was a damn good film. RIP Chabrol.

I haven't seen any of his movies but got two (2) of his box sets when they were mispriced (at $10 I think).

La Rupture and This Man Must Die - two of my favorites! He's left us a great catalogue of terrific movies.

Very sad news, I love his films...I own over 30 of them on DVD.
