I'm just knowledgeable enough about this kind of stuff to set it up, but I'm in over my head trying to actually fix things or even scour yon interwebs for information; all I kept encountering were .pdf files of the owner's manual I already have. So, I thought I'd come here and see if any of my fellow DVD Talkers might be able to help.
I should begin by acknowledging that this is a 12 year old unit. I bought it when it was still new all those years ago, moved in with my now-wife and let me brother take the receiver to his house for a while. Now it's reverted back to me, and while hooking up everything again, I failed to get any audio out of the center speaker. I tried different wires, to no avail. I then hooked up the center speaker to the front right wire, and sound came through--so I know the problem isn't the speaker itself. I would gladly appreciate any advice that might lead to me getting sound to come out of the center speaker again!

You might check to be sure you have the audio on some sort of surround output. Make sure it is not set on 2 channel audio for example.

Look for a "phantom" center channel setting. If it is turned on, the center is turned off and its signal is sent to the left and right channels.

Check.

Check. My receiver's display makes quite clear what the settings are; even though it's been several years since I used it, I was still familiar enough with it to remember this part.
Thanks so far, though, guys!

What speakers do you have? I'm not a big "its time to upgrade" guy, but a 12 year old RCA, "it might be time to upgrade". Prices are at an all time low for decent receivers. For example,
$250 (appears shipping is included) for a full featured, nice little Onkyo....

I'm sure technologically it's "time to upgrade." Financially, though, it's time that I consulted people online to figure out how to coax some sound out of a 12 year old receiver.

if all the speakers are connected properly then either your receivers center channel amp is shot or you have a setting disabling your center ch.
What kind of connection do you have coming from your dvd player? Optical, digital coax, or red and white rca's?

In this case I mention it "time to upgrade" from what appears to be a non-working unit to a working unit. That is the ultimate upgrade!
You mention you are familiar with the unit and used it many times, have trouble shot the speaker and wire.
The above question is a good one. You should be running a digital connection from your DVD player. Tho you depending on your receiver, you might be able to run a fake surround sound. But if that is not the issue...than I think you have kind of run out of things to test.
