Hooking up a Hard Drive to a DVR or TIVO?

Anyone try this with any luck? Directv has info on how to add a hard drive to have more storage space.

Is it worth it or will it eventually mess up your DVR?

You'd probably be better off asking about that in the Tech Talk or DVD & Home Theater Gear subforums.

TiVo only supports the WD My DVR Expander. I had one. It started getting flaky and kept locking up my TiVo during playback so I ended up not using it. I have heard of people cloning their software onto a larger drive though if you really are tech saavy.

Yeah, don't do the WD external on the TiVo. They have a high failure rate after only a year.

Not totally true. It depends on your model. Some were grandfathered in. I have the original Series 3 HD model with a 1TB in enclosure hooked up to it for about 180 hours of HD possible, IIRC.

TiVo Community Forums is where you need to go and do some research. They'll tell you what's possible with each model, what drives to buy/avoid, what enclosures, etc. The amount of information can be overwhelming. I read and re-read threads for a week or so before finally committing to a purchase.
