Blind Musical Taste Test #3 - Jazz/Funk

Here's an interesting one. It's a real Big Band Jazz/Funk hybrid.

<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gCWd4XZLGho?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gCWd4XZLGho?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

I don't know how many of you might go for this kind of thing, but I thought it would be interesting to get some comments on it.

Definitely better than the hard rock tests. And if this is who I think it is, a much better artist.

Man, that thing just burns there at the end. Awesome.

This song makes me wanna grow a cheesy mustache and cruise around downtown in a '76 Nova with the windows rolled down, wearing oversized sunglasses and a wide-collared checkered shirt.

I love pretty much everything about this song - the horns, the guitars, that sax solo - but the drum solo at the 4:00 mark is especially good. Great beat.

A big to this from me. I hope you'll reveal the name of the band.

I like it. The more jazzy it gets the less I dig it, though.

I liked it overall. I would have preferred for it to be looser, with more of the sweat of improvisation, but I would say that about most musics. The head had a little cheesiness to it, but the band grooved with it confidently enough for it not to matter. Not a big fan of that guitar sound, or maybe it was that buried-in-the-mix feel I didn't like. Each player had their moment and that made it feel a little overlong (as much as I usually like that sort of thing can be in a live setting), but nobody seemed to hit the limit of their chops. If I heard it out of the blue, I'd want to hear more.

Not really the kind of jazz I dig at all. The guitar is much more rock and the riffs are a bit trite but the musicianship is far superior to the cheez-rock of the of the other thread.

Sounds like soundtrack music from some early 70's Detective/Cop/Action flick. Pretty cool in it's own way.

Totally agree.

This, so far, is the best of the bunch.

I love it. Very 1972 (or a meticulous reproduction of that era's style) with a nice alto vs. tenor interplay around 2 minutes. This is the stuff that makes me happy.
So could it be...
Spoiler:
Bloodstone?
Herbie Hancock?
Deodato?
or maybe Earth Wind and Fire?
The mind reels...

I would not have guessed that, but hey, you accomplished your mission in turning me on to something I otherwise would not have known of. So, thanks, and keep 'em coming. Even if I may not personally like all of them, it's certainly been educational, and fun.
