Both have a stron following from the comic book crowd, and both are writers who write themselves into their screenplays. Favreau has more mainstream success, but Smith has been able to build a fanbase and create a universe for his characters.
Have to go with Smith, personally.

The only Kevin Smith film capable of topping Favreau is Chasing Amy. Between Swingers (which I know he didn't direct) and the Iron Man films, Favreau takes it.

Clerks was the first time that geeks were encouraged to crack open the closet door, and I like the simplicity of the story it tells. But Swingers name-dropped Deep Space Nine in addition to being an enjoyable slice-of-life story of its own. Favreau gets the nod.

Chasing Amy and the first 30 minutes of Clerks tops Iron Man

As time goes on, I like Clerks less and less and Clerks 2 more and more. Clerks: The Animated Series is still the best thing Smith has been involved in.

I agree on the Animated Series being very good, but Chasing Amy is an all-time great film imo.
And I like Clerks enough to give Clerks 2 another chance someday, but I can't imagine ever liking that steaming pile of utter crap.

Smith. Probably my favorite director just in terms of fun films.

Kevin Smith... but I'm mostly picking him for his writing, or at least I think I am.
After Cop Out I just don't know anymore.
EDIT to add: I love Smith's films, but just not his last one... at all.

I've lost track of the things I agree with you on.
This is spot and I couldn't agree more.
(although, I could do without the dance scene in Clerks 2)
