Rubicon -- 2 Hr Series Premiere -- "Gone in the Teeth/First Day of School" -- 8/1/10

Rubicon

Synopsis for episode 1

Spoiler:
Cloak-and-dagger doings about a troubled but brilliant code-cracking intelligence analyst at a federal agency. In the premiere episode, Will (James Badge Dale) considers quitting after an unsettling tragedy, but changes his mind when he discovers evidence of a possible government conspiracy. In a seemingly unrelated incident, a billionaire commits suicide and his wife ponders the reasons why.

Synopsis for episode 2

Spoiler:
On his first day in a supervisory position, Will has uncomfortable dealings with a staff who used to be his colleagues, while trying to decipher mysterious messages left by his late boss. Meanwhile, Katherine discovers her late husband harbored secrets.

Starring:

James Badge Dale (The Pacific, 24)
Jessica Collins (The Nine)
Miranda Richardson
Arliss Howard

Episode 1 premiered after the Breaking Bad finale and has been on Directv on Demand and Hulu.com for last 2 months. I decided to wait and watch it tonight in it's 2 hour block instead. Looks like an interesting cloak and dagger type show.

AMC ordered 13 episodes.

What's the word on this? I was all set not to watch it because they played the commercial on a continuous loop in a hotel I was in 2 weeks ago but now I'm thinking it might be interesting.

^ Pretty much everyone who saw the pilot when it first aired seemed to like it quite a bit.

Entertainment Weekly actually gave this an A-

The only thing that bugs me is James Badge Dale's really odd looking haircut. Maybe it's because I still remember him as Jack Bauer's partner on 24 (Chase) 7 years ago and he had a buzz cut back then.

Honestly, I would watch this. But since DirecTV does not have AMC HD, I will refuse to watch it. I'm sick of watching Breaking Bad in SD.

I'm with Deftones on the absurdity of the DTV/AMC HD issue, but I will begrudgingly check it out. I'm all caught up on my DVR and got nothing else to watch btwn 8 and 10.

I'll check it out -- even though Dish has the same SD issue with AMC that DTV has.

Wow, you mean Time Warner has an HD channel that the satellite companies don't?

I'm in shock!

I don't get it. You're willing to miss out on possibly a great show just because it isn't in HD?

I guess they think it's a major eye sore to watch a 480p TV show on a 720p or 1080p HDTV. I know it isn't ideal and doesn't utilize the HDTV to it's fullest, but I watch Mad Men and personally it doesn't bother me.

Watching Mad Men in SD bothers me extremely, particularly since much of the beauty of the show involves the props, dress, etc. It particularly hurts with Mad Men. I just bought a BR player and the biggest reason is so I can rewatch Mad Men on BR. Not to mention that DTV is such a jerk-you-around company (like the others). Just get it done and jack my rate 5 cents a month or whatever pennies it is.

If this was 2004, I could deal with it. Some of us expect more from pay-providers in 2010, particularly when seeing HD channels that I couldn't care less about.

Watching an SD channel on an HD set looks like shit in more cases then not. Yes it would prevent me from watching if I didn't have AMCHD.

Reading this thread, I'm glad Verizon carries AMCHD.

I'm still pissed off that DirecTV had a commercial for Breaking Bad on their 101 channel in beautiful HD six months ago...nothing like slapping your subscribers in the face.

I'll be watching this in addition to Mad Men, but I'll have a scowl on my face the entire time.

in this case, yes. this isn't some groundbreaking television (Breaking Bad) that I'm willing to suffer through SD. this is another dime a dozen conspiracy-type show. plus, it appears as though it will run into regular TV season, and I won't have time for it then.

So I take it most people in this topic no longer buy and watch DVDs right?

I liked it, but it'll be interesting to see how many it retains an audience with as slow as it moves. I'd say it was a bad decision to run it for 2 hours tonight because I can see people getting tired and bailing.

Watched the first hour - good god that was terribly boring. Won't have to worry about suffering through it in SD.
